A special bottling to celebrate a major distillery expansion in 2010. So nice to see this whisky bottled at cask strength and not chill-filtered. Silky smooth, velvety texture. Creamy sweet foundation of vanilla fudge and caramel-coated almond. Plenty of fruit, too (golden raisin, honeyed peach, ripe nectarine, hint of banana bread). Richly textured, good weight (but not cloying), and the flavors combine seamlessly. A celebratory whisky indeed.

Vibrant gold with orange highlights, fruity scent of apples and pears plus a whiff of vanilla. Soft, velvety feel. This is a pleasant and drinkable Scotch, but the flavors are relatively muted. It mixes well with other flavors, making it a good contender for cocktails. Good value.

The palate entry is sweet, creamy and assertive; at midpalate the flavor becomes intensely nutty, buttery and bacon fat-like, with the beginnings of rancio. Remains one of Speyside’s standard-bearer 12 year olds.

The Dimple Pinch 15yr Blended Scotch (750ml)

Amber/orange color. The assertive, aldehydic, dry nose offers hints of hay, cooked rice, corn husk, iodine and toasted cereal. Once on the palate, voluptuous tastes of smoke, iodine, and soft peat come together in a graceful, well-coordinated dance of flavor. It ends rather smokily with a sweet, toffee tail. No question but that the 15 years of aging really makes the difference in this medium- to full-bodied Scotch, as the various components complement each other beautifully. A prime example of the glories of blending.

This sparkling straw-colored whisky has a delicate nose, with some citrus notes and hints of wildflowers and fresh heather. The body is medium and buttery, and the palate holds light malty notes, hints of honey, tobacco, and just a mere suggestion of peat. There are also some subtle fruits evident here (melons?) and just a touch of lemon zest. The finish is far deeper than the palate suggests it might be, leaving a rounder, long, sweet/smoky taste alongside some masculine tobacco notes.

Ends on a sweet malty note. Builds from stage to stage, each phase being better than the last. Best Buy.

Funny to think how recently Caol Ila was an Islay giant that was kept pretty much under wraps by its owner. These days it has cemented its reputation as the island’s Mr. Consistent. This version shows its character the best, a nose that mixes seashore and grass with a distinct hint of smoked bacon. The peatiness isn’t dominant, but flows throughout the palate, scenting, lifting, and subtly changing the mix. A delicious oiliness makes it a great food whisky.

Extra points for versatility — this whisky will accommodate many moods and situations.
