The wine is/was great! B‑21 lets you know the rating (and the prices which are usually great) so you know what you are getting. I also try to order on a free shipping day. This time it made me a little nervous since the wine box was 10 or so hours late. But it got here, which is what counts (all bottles intact). A local G‑Store has wine sales for 25% off but rarely have wine as good as B‑21's

2022 Xanadu Chardonnay Reserve (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaret River, Western Australia, Australia
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

As prices in Napa Valley continue to skyrocket, savvy collectors are turning to some far-flung reaches to get their hands on cult-caliber Cabernets and Chardonnays for prices that don't break the bank, and Australia's Margaret River is at the top of the pyramid in that regard. You may be familiar with iconic Leeuwin's Art Series, but Xanadu has been quietly keeping pace for years with their equally stunning line-up, headlined by the critically acclaimed Reserve bottlings.

At 97+ points, the 2022 Chardonnay Reserve is "a wine of profound complexity and length, yet it is steely, restrained and mineral in the extreme," writes Erin Larkin of Wine Advocate. The heavily maritime climate of the Wallcliffe sub-region that Xanadu calls home gives extra vibrancy and verve to an already racy style of Chardonnay that Margaret River is well-known for, as is confirmed by several glowing critical reviews in addition to Larkin's. A pair of 96-point reviews from Suckling and Halliday Wine Companion and 94 points from Vinous add icing to the cake. Likewise, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve notched 95+ points from Vinous' Angus Hughson, who writes, "all the signs point to something special" in this hallmark Margaret River expression. In other words, don't sleep for a second on this pair for a bona fide, world-class collectibles that can be had for a fraction of the price of similar bottlings from Napa or Burgundy.

At the opposite end of the price spectrum, the flagship wines present some of the greatest QPR expressions to be found anywhere in Australia, with massive scores across the board and under $30 each. The 95-point 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is a "classic, polished Margaret River Cab" that demonstrates a "youthful, vibrant nature" today but will certainly cruise for a few years in the cellar. Also pulling in 95 points, the 2023 Chardonnay is "very focused and mineral-driven," demonstrating the excellent, cool-vintage potential of Margaret River Chard in this vintage. The electric, vibrant style of Xanadu means this is one for the cellar, and probably for much longer than you'd think, according to Wine Enthusiast's Christina Pickard.

It's not every day that you can find a pair of benchmark collectible and a pair of stellar QPR value stars in the same offer, let alone from the same producer, but today offers a chance for wine lovers of all stripes and budgets to load up on some overperforming all-stars at market-best pricing across the board.

97WA 96AWC 96JS 96D

The 2022 Reserve Chardonnay is richer and more voluminous than the racy Steven's Road, and the wine exhibits a capacious mid-palate that tends to expand and widen as it progresses through to the long finish. This is a wine of profound complexity and length, yet it is steely, restrained and mineral in the extreme. Salivating acidity clinches the deal. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

97+ points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (Jul 2024)

The reserve shines this vintage, coming across all superfine and linear, yet layers upon layers of flavour. Ginger florals, lemon balm and all manner of citrus charm. Ultra-refreshing with a live wire of acidity gathering all the elements and taking them on a joy ride. There’s a millefeuille effect of lees, fruit, oak and spice so this turns out moreish, savoury and complex. But above all, just a great drink.

96 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion (Aug 2024)

Wonderfully complex and mineral-driven aromas of lime curd, lemon confit, sea spray and nougat. The palate is tightly bound with energetic acidity and powerful underlying notes of gunsmoke, grapefruit pith, orange blossoms and jasmine. Polished with incredibly high tension. Pure class. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

96 points, James Suckling (Oct 2024)

An exotic spring bouquet: jasmine, honeysuckle, cedar, sea spray and a crushed limestone minerality. Spicy, with a restrained flint character. Crystalline Meyer lemon fruit and a slight oak char. Mouthfilling yet not voluptuous. Taut, long and striking, with power and volume from the fruit core. A beauty. 100% Gingin clone from Xanadu’s oldest Chardonnay vineyard.

Showing off its youthful, vibrant nature with all manner of flavours from cassis, mulberries and redcurrants to baking spices, nori and a distinct whiff of licorice – even warm bitumen – and a flutter of leafy freshness. Fuller bodied but well composed with ripe, if slightly sandy, tannins and the cedary oak neatly tucked in, just giving off a slight green walnut note. Appealing now but in a way, it’s still finding its groove and will be more complete with an extra year or so in bottle.

95 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion (Aug 2024)

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon leads with glossy black fruits, dried mint, licorice, pink peppercorn and blood plum. The tannins are chewy and supple and feel ultra fine in the context of the length of flavor and intensity thereof. Silty is another word. It's a lovely wine, from a very good Cabernet vintage in Margaret River. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

94 points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (Nov 2024)

Dusty tobacco, savory herbs and an umami note threads dense blackcurrant and menthol. With quiet power and chiseled, cat's tongue tannins, this is still young and tightly wound, but should unravel gracefully over the next decade. Classic, polished Margaret River Cab.

94 points, Christina Pickard, Wine Enthusiast (Mar 2025)

A blend of fruit from mature vineyards from Wilyabrup, Yallingup, Wallcliffe and Treeton, that spends 14 months in 40% new French oak barriques. Classic lifted Margaret River cassis with fresh ocean brine, nori, satsuma plum, cooling granite and a touch of myrrh. Balanced if slightly grainy tannins, with notes of nigella and caraway seed, strawberry top and hibiscus florals. Prickles of wild spice and Sichuan pepper with knife-like acidity. Firm, ripe tannins with poised width and length – and plenty of persistence.

2022 Vieux Chateau Saint Andre (750ml)

"This is an extraordinary vintage that will go down in record books as one of the all-time greats." - Jeb Dunnuck

When Bordeaux's 2022 vintage premiered three years ago, there was some uncertainty as to how the wines would play out from such a hot, dry growing season, one which surely promised wines of massive power, ripeness, and weight. Would it be too much of a good thing?

As it appeared then, and as it has turned out now that the wines are releasing to market, it's an extraordinary campaign among the best of the century. As Dunnuck observes, "Now that the wines are in bottles, it’s clear they have fully lived up to the early hype—and not just at the high end. The 2022s are deep, layered, and concentrated while staying beautifully balanced, light on their feet, and elegant."

Today's selection presents an incredible treasure trove that showcases the vintage's greatest features at every price in the spectrum, leaving no doubt as to how good 2022 Bordeaux really is.

93JD 93JA 93D 92WA

The 2022 Vieux Château Saint Andre is made by Jeff Berrouet from 12.5 hectares of vines in the Montagne region on the Right Bank. Mostly Merlot, yet with 10% Cabernet Franc, raised mostly in used barrels (10% new), it has a terrific nose of ripe black cherries, tobacco leaf, damp earth, and chocolate that would give a top Saint-Emilion a run for its money. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, round, supple 2022 with ripe tannins, layered mouthfeel, and outstanding length.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2025)

This is always a château to look out for in quality vintages, because you get the skill of the Berrouet family at great value. Helped by the limestone soils also, this is expectedly impressive, softly spoken damson and black cherry fruit, pulses of pomegranate and passion fruit, bitter chocolate and liqourice. A great wine, a buy.

93 points, Jane Anson (May 2023)

Gorgeous scents, softly floral, slightly spiced and lots of bright red and black bramble fruit. Juicy, alive, energetic and so clean. High acidity is at the fore, really quite lean and high toned, not much in the way of density of tannins, they're more fine and delicate but still delivering a concentrated, ripe and fruit-forward wine with tension and brightness. Definitely has a charm, with some spiced dark chocolate touches lingering on the finish.

93 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Mar 2023)

Notes of licorice, pencil lead, smoke and violet mingled with iris preface the 2022 Vieux Château Saint André, a medium to full-bodied, dense and concentrated wine with a fleshy core of fruit, structured tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Jean-Claude Berrouet and his family own this estate, which is managed by his son Jean-François.

2022 Schoffit Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru (750ml)
Riesling from Alsace, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

"The wines are compelling in a rather quiet way, understated but so convincing." - Anne Krebiehl, Vinous

"They are of a consistently high quality and, in my opinion, still far too rarely on the radar of importers, retailers and sommeliers." - Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

Alsace as a whole is often considered an under-the-radar region, so when we come upon a domaine that is known as "under the radar," it's safe to say it's probably far under the radar. The shame is, as Wine Advocate's Stephan Reinhardt notes above, that wines and domaines like these deserve far more attention. However, clued-in and savvy wine collectors can reap serious benefits in the form of world-class cellar contenders at prices that are a fraction of what you'd pay for comparable quality and pedigree from Burgundy, Champagne, or virtually anywhere else in France.

Domaine Schoffit's vineyard stable is loaded with prime sites, but the unquestioned jewel in the crown is the Clos St-Théobald in the Rangen de Thann Grand Cru, inarguably the finest vineyard in Alsace. At 6.5 hectares, the Clos is now a monopole since Bernard Schoffit completed his ambitious reclamation project to unite the entire site under his domaine. The super-steep slopes and volcanic soitls produce one of the world's most distinctive Rieslings, and the 97-point 2022 ranks among the greatest vintages ever made of this wine. Not to be overlooked, the 2022 Sommerberg Grand Cru Riesling is another singular standout, this from granitic soils that shine in the wine's stunning combination of aromatic purity and textural intensity. Finally, the 2022 Harth Gewürztraminer showcases Schoffit's great sites around Colmar with fantastic varietal precision, particularly "the glorious spice of Gewürztraminer" as Anne Krebiehl notes.

It bears repeating – these wines belong on the short list of Alsace's finest names along side the Weinbachs, Trimbachs, and Zind-Humbrechts, so if you're a serious Alsace fan or collector of the world's best Rieslings, make room in the cellar. You'll be so glad you did.

94WA 94V 94WE 93WS

The 2022 Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg comes from a very warm and dry vintage but somehow turns out pretty classic, with deep, saline and pure rock aromas intertwined with lemon and green apple aromas. Round and rich on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense and textural Riesling from granite soils. It is powerful and quite massive at this stage, even a little sweetish (3.3 grams of residual sugar), but on the finish, it's saline and pure and provided with fine tannins. The 2022 is obviously in a valley of its development at the moment and quite edgy; it's not going anywhere and should thus be kept for at least 5 or 6 years. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in Colmar, November 2024.

94+ points, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate (Feb 2025)

The 2022 Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru is grown on pure granite at the top of the Sommerberg, in a little amphitheater in the lieu-dit Sommerberg itself. The wine is surprisingly pale. A gorgeous conifer note is subtle on the nose but easily reaches the sinuses. It is so delicious. The palate is gorgeously strait-laced, absolutely stony, naked, unbuffered, hair-raising and exciting. This is so stony and precise, crystalline, in fact. Acidity is milder than usual, but the stoniness and the arrow-like nature are exactly what I expect. (Bone-Dry)

94 points, Anne Krebiehl, Vinous (Apr 2024)

This dry, crunchy Riesling displays spiced flavors of grapefruit sorbet, white cherry, honeysuckle and tangerine. There's a lot of energy coming from the vivacious acidity, but this is so seamless you don't even notice the intensity at first. It's delicious and harmonious, with a lingering, mineral-tinged finish.

94 points, Aleks Zecevic, Wine Enthusiast (Nov 2024)

A zesty, spicy style, with candied ginger and warm spice details infusing the core of juicy, honeyed apple. A round, generous version, with a broad, creamy feel, yet this still offers good tension. Finishes dry, with a candied almond note. Flinty mineral and lime zest accents stretch out on the well-meshed end. Delicious. Drink now through 2030. 70 cases made, 20 cases imported.

The 2022 Riesling Rangen Clos Saint Théobald Grand Cru is from a parcel in the midslope of the Rangen, picked from vines between 40 and 45 years old. The nose has immense clarity of the brightest citrus. The palate is totally taut, still raw almost, but displaying clarity, precision and wonderful concentration that tingles with all manner of citrus zest, spanning lemon, bergamot and aromatic tangerine. Exquisite density shows beautiful ripeness and serene smoothness, despite all the stone, wonderfully complete, without a touch of heat despite what Schoffit calls, rightly, a "violent, warm" terroir. The 2022 is a pure wine of stone and tingling, aromatic citrus zest. (Bone-Dry)

97 points, Anne Krebiehl, Vinous (Apr 2024)

The 2022 Riesling Grand Cru Rangen Clos Saint-Théobald is from 50+-years-old vines in the clos that includes the upper plots of Schoffit's regular Rangen. The nose is very pure yet very intense as well, offering the classic flintiness and iodine notes combined with fully ripe, bright, elegant and intense, spicy-scented fruit. Full-bodied, round and rich on the palate, this is a generous, powerful and textured yet always elegant and saline Riesling with some grams of residual sugar (4.1 grams per liter) yet the richness of old vines and their mineral, expression as well. This is a superb Rangen Riesling that Alexandre describes as "one of the best we ever did." The finish is in fact very long, intense and seriously structured and provided with persistent salinity. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in Colmar, November 2024.

The 2022 Gewurztraminer Rangen Clos Saint Théobald Grand Cru is from parcels in the lower and mid reaches of the Rangen. It comes with lovely honeysuckle, tangerine peel and an overtone of rose. The palate is rounded and robust, channeling rose oil on a stony palate. It opens into the fresh, crushed flesh of ripe yellow peach, edged with vivid zestiness, blood orange peel and an exquisite, lovely, mouthwatering, pithy bitterness. This is what makes the wine, what gives it structure and depth. This is intense but toned, gorgeous, prolonged, and off-dry with 23 g/L of residual sweetness. (Off-Dry)

From 50+-year-old vines, the 2022 Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Rangen Clos Saint-Théobald opens clear, fresh and spicy on the intense, complex and very mineral nose, revealing tropical fruit aromas. On the palate, this is a very rich and dense but elegant and savory Gewürztraminer with serious tannins and a long, intense and powerful yet not alcoholic but saline and tension-giving finish. This is an impressive wine, but it is far too young to be served yet. 14.3% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in Colmar, November 2024.

2022 Roucas Toumba Vacqueyras Les Restanques de Cabassole (750ml)
Grenache from Vacqueyras, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

We've been searching high and low for a top-notch Vacqueyras domaine to add to our direct-import stable, and last October we got more than we bargained for from Eric Boutelin's Roucas Toumba estate. The domaine is not nearly as well-known as it should be, given that he has some of the Vacqueyras appellation's most pristine, old-vine parcels and employs incredibly meticulous winemaking practices to give his vines their absolute best expression, resulting in what Wine Advocate's Yohan Castaing calls "some of the appellation’s most authentic and terroir-driven wines." After tasting through the latest releases, we couldn't agree more.

"The 2022 Vacqueyras les Restanques de Cabassole is a superb showing from this estate ... This is a serious Vacqueyras with depth, drive and aging potential." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

The entire range is top-tier, and the 2022 Restanques de Cabassole is a true revelation of the absolute heights that Vacqueyras can reach and an absolutely showstopping effort that puts the appellation on another level altogether, notching 94+ points from Wine Advocate. B-21 Rhône Buyer Andrew Kitz calls it "a thoroughly complete expression of true Southern Rhône character, classic in every way."

"The purity and precision here are impressive, and the long, focused finish underscores its potential. This is a superb Vacqueyras..." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

The 93-point 2023 La Grande Terre, another old-vine Grenache-based gem that's done entirely in concrete, which gives the wine absolutely stunning purity of fruit with "supple and enveloping" textural precision. Where the Restanques certainly needs time in the cellar to show all its cards, the Grande Terre is a thrilling preview that is accessible now, with the substance and craftsmanship to develop its own mesmerizing nuances over time, as well.

Vacqueyras has long lived in the shadow of Gigondas, but with efforts like these from Eric Boutelin, we're extremely excited to showcase the rising tide of quality in this excellent but overlooked appellation. There's no question that Boutelin's star is rising, and we're thrilled to add him to our direct-import portfolio, with two of the sharpest Rhône buys we've seen all year.

The 2022 Vacqueyras les Restanques de Cabassole is a superb showing from this estate, delivering a powerful yet refined expression of Vacqueyras. A blend of 60% Grenache Noir, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre grown on marl, clay and calcareous sand soils, it offers up a deeply aromatic bouquet of crushed violets, wild spices, Timut pepper and ripe black fruits. Full-bodied and layered, it’s built around a dense, fleshy core of fruit, framed by velvety tannins and energized by a bright spine of acidity. Despite its concentration, the wine never feels heavy, concluding with a saline, ethereal finish that speaks to its underlying finesse. This is a serious Vacqueyras with depth, drive and aging potential.

94+ points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Oct 2025)

Eyebrows raised all around when we tasted Eric Boutelin’s 2022 Restanques Vacqueyras. Cutting right to the chase, it’s a thoroughly complete expression of true Southern Rhône character, classic in every way. Reticent notes of hot stones, fine dried herbs, and deep, dark fruit line the bouquet, very captivating yet restrained, tinged by hot asphalt, peppery spices, and dried violets. The palate is a picture of precision, its exceptional weight carried by wonderfully balanced, assertive yet finessed tannins and pinpoint acidity. The flavors take some coaxing, but that same depth from the nose is there in spades. Brooding dark fruits, earthy soil tones, iron, wild game, and fine floral accents come in well-defined succession to a lasting finish. It’s obvious this wine has some serious evolution in store. It’s absolutely enjoyable now for its undeniably classic personality, but it will become truly exceptional after several years in the cellar, especially considering the price.

Reflecting its owner's commitment to producing authentic, terroir-driven wines, this dynamic duo from Raymond Vineyards are two of Napa Valley's top values. The enticing 91-point 2023 Raymond Chardonnay Reserve Selection and elegant, 93-point 2022 Raymond Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Selection are both sourced from exceptional Napa fruit at an outstanding price for stocking up.

Known for his larger-than-life personality and flamboyant, velvet-jacket attire, Burgundy-born Jean-Charles Boisset is a true believer that great wines are made in the vineyard, and his first priority after purchasing Raymond Vineyards in 2009 was to upgrade the existing 90-acre property and implement organic and biodynamic viticulture. Established in Napa Valley over 50 years ago by long-time Beringer winemaker Roy Raymond, Raymond Vineyards now spans over 300 acres in Rutherford and St. Helena, the vineyards and winemaking managed under the direction of 100-point consulting winemaker Phillippe Melka since 2009. In addition to gaining organic and biodynamic certification for the vineyards and building one of Napa's largest solar panel projects to generate electricity for the winery, Boisset hired former Far Niente winemaker Stephanie Putnam to work alongside Melka to refine the blends, consistently garnering 90-plus points throughout her tenure.

Expertly crafted from outstanding Napa fruit, this duo of top scoring Raymond Reserve Selections boast a winning combination of quality and value, both ready to enjoy now and promising pleasurable drinking for years ahead at an easy to reach for price.

93D 91JS

The 2022 Raymond Reserve is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. Aged for 19 months in 31% new small French oak barrels from Ermitage, Seguin Moreau, Taransaud, and Saury, it was bottled unfiltered in August 2024. Draped in its signature red velvet label, the Reserve bottling is the most structured and balanced wine in the lineup, standing on equal footing with the Generations bottling in 2022. It delivers a panoply of red, black, and blue-toned fruit, layered with dried herbs and anchored by a firm, dusty tannic backbone. Notes of salted dark chocolate and graphite minerality frame the finish, adding depth and complexity to the overall profile.

93 points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter (Feb 2025)

Easy-sipping, full-bodied and almost sweet in flavor. This blend of grapes from around Napa Valley gives a broad, generous texture and lush, ripe red and black fruit. 11% of cabernet franc adds a little tannin to balance the sunny fruit flavors. Drink now.

2022 Philippe Alliet Chinon Vieilles Vignes (750ml)
Cabernet Franc from Chinon, Loire, France

"What a great scoop for our Loire direct-import portfolio to have Philippe Alliet and his son Pierre join the fold ... these wines are easily among the very best in Chinon." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Loire Buyer

While not extremely well-known on this side of the Atlantic, Domaine Philippe Alliet is one of the Chinon appellation's leading lights, standing in strong company right alongside the likes of Charles Joguet. Father and son Philippe and Pierre employ meticulous methods to their prized vineyard holdings (some of the very best in all of Chinon), spearheading a new wave of viticulture that emphasizes very low yields and optimally ripe fruit at all costs. The resulting wines are nothing short of revelatory, reference-point expressions, which we saw first-hand during a tasting last fall.

The entire range is superb, but the 93-point 2022 Vieilles Vignes offers a perfect introduction to this remarkable, must-know estate.Selecting from the oldest vines in their various plots, all at least 70 years old, the Alliets vinify and age the VV entirely in cement vats, while full de-stemming only adds to the sheer allure of the wine's personality and expression. As Yohan Castaing of Wine Advocate writes, "This vintage is one of the most precise and pure expressions of Vieilles Vignes I have ever tasted. Kudos!"

Turning to the single-vineyard cuvées, the 2022 L'Huisserie hails from a south-facing on Chinon's most favored hillside, the clay and flint soils imparting both a round, fleshy, full-fruited character as well as a firm mineral signature to the wine. This "multidimensional wine" showcase the Alliet style to a T, with none of the rusticity that often follows Chinon Cab Franc. Finally, the 2023 Coteau de Noiré is a stupendous expression of a Chinon "grand cru" site with similar clay and marl soils and a much steeper 40% incline. The wine exhibits a firm structural foundation, sappy mid-palate, and brooding fruit profile for what amounts to a pinnacle expression of cellar-worthy Cabernet Franc.

Best of all, we're bringing you the Alliet wines directly from the domaine as new additions to our rapidly expanding Loire direct-import range, so the quality for price, which was already outstanding, becomes essentially unbeatable in the category.

Aromas of raspberries, licorice, cassis and dark wild berries preface the 2022 Chinon Vieilles Vignes, a medium-bodied, enveloping and layered wine with a seamless, fine-grained texture complemented by powdery tannins and concluding with a long and ethereal finish. This vintage is one of the most precise and pure expressions of Vieilles Vignes I have ever tasted. Kudos!

93 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Jun 2024)

What a great scoop for our Loire direct-import portfolio to have Philippe Alliet and his son Pierre join the fold. They’re far less known in the US than they should be, because these wines are easily among the very best in Chinon. The 2022 Vieilles Vignes, sourced from their oldest plots at least 70 years of age, is undeniably charming for seasoned Loire fans and the Loire curious alike. Done entirely in concrete from fully de-stemmed fruit, the 2022 is emblematic of the new wave of growers in Chinon, among whom the Alliets stand out in a big way. Compact aromatics of dark currant, black cherry, anisette, and red hard candy jump from the glass, with just a tinge of chalky minerality underneath. The palate is equally concentrated and compact, with more dark fruits, white peppercorn, and red licorice. Great structural balance and texturally suave, it’s juicy and perfectly ripe. This makes for a style that might come across as “modern” to some, but in reality it's varietal purity through and through. In essence, textbook Chinon Cabernet Franc.

92 points, Andrew Kitz, B-21 Loire Buyer (Dec 2025)

Dried herbs, berries, paprika and violets on the nose. It’s full-bodied and deeply colored with excellent purity. Lots of ripe, fine tannins. Cabernet franc aged in concrete. Drink or hold.

If the Vieilles Vignes is elegant and refined, the 2022 Chinon L'Huisserie, already in barrels, is more round and structured. Offering up a floral bouquet of peony, iris and violet intertwined with dark wild berries, it’s medium to full-bodied, precise and pure with a textural attack and powdery tannins, segueing into a penetrating, mineral finish. It will offer a broad drinking window. This multidimensional wine should turn out very well after the élevages and for the 10 to 20 years to come.

Intense and deeply colored, with lots of violets, fresh blue fruit, blackberries and minerals. Really flavorful, with precise tannins and lovely firmness without chewiness. Long and concentrated but fresh and energetic. 66% merlot, 23% cabernet sauvignon and 11% petit verdot. Drink from 2028.

The 2022 Madame de Beaucaillou is an elegant, polished wine. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, cinnamon and white pepper are all beautifully lifted. Mid-weight and gracious, with terrific purity, the Madame de Beaucaillou is a gorgeous wine from proprietor Bruno Borie and his team at Ducru-Beaucaillou.

The 2022 Madame De Beaucaillou (66% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11% Petit Verdot) is brilliant, with a dense ruby/plum hue as well as powerful aromatics of crème de cassis, ripe black cherries, spicy wood, and smoky tobacco. This rich, medium to full-bodied, layered, concentrated beauty way over-delivers. Drink bottles over the coming decade or so.

The 2022 Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion is punching above its weight this year. Unfurling in the glass with a gourmand, lively and vibrant bouquet of raspberry, mulberries, rose, violet and cassis, it's medium to full-bodied, seamless and layered with refined, velvety tannins and a deep core of fruit, concluding with a harmonious, elegant profile that avoids any excess, enhancing its distinctive personality. Guillaume Pouthier, Guillaume Deschepper and their team have done a fantastic job at this address, delivering an exceptional wine.

94 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Mar 2025)

The 2022 C Des Carmes Haut-Brion is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, and the rest 1% Petit Verdot that was fermented with 30% whole clusters and aged 12 months in a new foudre (there's a small part in used barrels) followed by four months all in concrete tanks. There are fewer stems in this cuvée as the vines are younger, and it has a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a spicy, peppery, complex perfume of darker berry and plum fruits, spring flowers, tobacco leaf, and a beautiful sense of minerality. Medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, elegant, and loaded with character, it's a singular Pessac-Léognan that will have two decades of longevity.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2025)

The 2022 Le C de Carmes Haut-Brion is a big, powerful wine. Just bottled, it is dramatic and decidedly large-scaled in the early going. I am curious to see how much baby fat this sheds in the next year or so as it starts to recover from bottling. Even today, though, the 2022 is so impressive. Dark red cherry/plum fruit, spice, dried herbs and menthol gradually open with a bit of coaxing. I would not dream of touching a bottle any time soon.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2025)

The aromas just pop out of the glass, offering plenty of flowers, pears, berries, rose stems and fresh currants. Wild fruits, too. It's full-bodied with so much juicy fruit and a creamy texture. Already open and delicious, with wonderful intensity. 30% whole-cluster fermentation. Second wine of Les Carmes Haut-Brion. Best after 2027, but fantastic now.

94 points, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

Seductive and deeply perfumed, this wine bursts with blackcurrants, cherries, and subtle spice. The crystalline acidity is immediately fresh and bright, while soft, delicate tannins create a silky texture without heaviness. It has energy and forward motion, balancing purity and precision. The Carmes signature shines through - pure fruit, supple tannins, and a long, elegant body. Flavours of cherry, damson plum, and redcurrant lead to a mineral, oyster-shell finish with a subtle salty tang. Both fresh and age-worthy, this is a beautifully framed, dynamic wine that leaves you wanting more. One of the best second wines. I love this. 31% whole bunch fermented.

94 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jan 2025)

A lovely wine, great depth of flavour, wisps of smoke and grilled coffee bean, avoids the heaviness of the vintage, and provides a distinct personality. 30% whole cluster, Guillaume Pouthier director, Guillaume Deschepper technical director, closed with wax. First year ageing in 55% new oak of differing sizes, then amphoras and cement vats for second year. From the 2023 vintage they plan to add an extra year in cement vats to ensure that the C de Carmes is fully ready to drink on release.

2022 Larrivet Haut Brion Rouge (750ml)

"Confirming my expectations, the 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is one of the best wines ever produced at this estate." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

As part of the general trend of overperforming Pessac estates in the past decade, Larrivet Haut-Brion's stock is steadily rising among the critical press and Bordeaux enthusiasts alike. Thanks to the guiding hand of famed enologist Michel Rolland, the style of the estate's wines has taken on an unprecedented level of class and polish culminating in the spectacular 2022 vintage. Following the overall character of the vintage, this triple 95-point, sub-$50 standout is "a dramatic, deeply resonant wine" with loads of structural stuffing to go the distance in the cellar.

To further emphasize the estate's marvelous recent trajectory, we also have four back-vintage gems on offer that showcase how well Larrivet performs year in and year out. The 2016 is now in its prime drinking window where it will remain for years, while the 95-point 2019 shows "a rich, broad, mouth-filling, spicy, complex and full-bodied style that has loads to love" per Jeb Dunnuck. Keen-eyed collectors also won't sleep on the AG95 rendition from the "off-vintage" of 2017. "Bold, rich and intense, the 2017 exudes tremendous depth and intensity ... Readers should expect a wine of real energy and explosive power," declares Galloni.

All in all, we love featuring Pessac, because the appellation is rife with stupendous collectible values, and while collectors often focus on building verticals of Bordeaux's most hallowed names, this line-up proves that you can get tremendous mileage out of doing the same with under-the-radar gems like Larrivet.

95JD 95JS 94V 94WI 94D 93WA 93WE 93JA

The 2022 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion checks in as 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 18% Merlot that spent 16 months in barrel. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a beautifully perfumed, medium to full-bodied, elegant 2022 that has red, blue, and some black fruits, a lifted, floral perfume of incense, smoky tobacco, and blood orange, fine, polished tannins, and a great finish. It's beautifully done, and while it's already accessible, it should age beautifully for two decades.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2025)

Such beautiful aromas of blackberries, flowers, nettles and crushed stones follow through to a medium body with firm yet open tannins and a long and crunchy finish. Needs three or four years to come together but very well-constructed. 61% cabernet sauvignon, 21% cabernet franc and 18% merlot. 5% whole-bunch fermentation. Drink after 2029.

95 points, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is dense, powerful and explosive. Black cherry, plum, new leather, licorice and mocha are amplified in this dramatic, deeply resonant wine. Gorgeous.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2025)

The assemblage here is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, at 61% of the total, with 21% Cabernet Franc and just 18% Merlot, the only cuvée in the appellation to relegate this variety into third place. This is surely relevant when it comes to the aromatics, which are an absolute delight, immediately reminding me of the 2016 vintage, with finely desiccated currant and blackberry wrapped up with Cabernet Franc tobacco and pencil shavings, perfumed oak, slate, sage, white flowers, sandalwood and crushed chalk. The palate is totally correct, deft and light-footed, with a coherent composition, beautifully cut with toast and matchstick notes, but ultimately this is a wine of dark and driven fruit with a wealth of softening components wrapped around the periphery, set in a medium-bodied substance. A really classy Pessac-Léognan, with a long grip of Cabernet tannins;one for the cellar. Tasted twice. The alcohol on the label is 14%.

94 points, Chris Kissack, Wine Independent (Jun 2025)

Highly aromatic and fragrant nose full of dark berry fruits, dried flowers and chocolate. Well sculpted on the palate, tannins give the frame and strength while the bright red, juicy berry fruit adds lift. There's still some tension to this - it drives in a straight line from start to finish with crushed stones, graphite and cola accenting the finish. Still feels a little shy but I love the styling and precision to the elements. A flash of heat and spice on the finish puts the vintage into the picture and suggests waiting a little longer to enjoy this but it's very nice.

94 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jan 2025)

Confirming my expectations, the 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is one of the best wines ever produced at this estate. Revealing a complex, vibrant bouquet of cassis, lilac, iris, mulberries, spices and menthol complemented by barely noticeable oak, it's medium to full-bodied and layered with a seamless, pure texture and a fleshy core of fruit perfectly framed by velvety tannins and bright acids. The Cabernet Franc contributes a floral finish, while the Cabernet Sauvignon adds a balanced structure. It should age gracefully.

93 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Mar 2025)

An elegant wine with a blueberry and chocolate aroma and touches of toast. With its ripe tannins and succulent black fruits, the wine has a dense structure. Drink from 2028.

93 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Oct 2025)

Lovely aromatics here, dives straight in to a charming, fruit-filled glass, nothing too concentrated in colour or on the nose, still with plenty of personality. Edge of vanilla bean smoke on the nose, there is a sweetness here, raspberry puree, fragrant lemongrass, violet and cherry pit. Enjoyable, fresh acidities on the finish. Dominant Cabernet, with over 80% between Sauvignon and Franc, and a generous for the vintage 40hl/h yield. 15% whole cluster, aged in a mix of amphora, new barrels and one year old barrels. 2022 Jean Collet Valmur Chablis Grand Cru (750ml)
Chardonnay from Chablis, Burgundy, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

We've been eyeing Domaine Jean Collet for a while as a new addition to our direct-import stable, and now we have them. This family-run domaine, now under the direction of the very talented Romain Collet, is a bastion of classically styled Chablis, even in a ripe vintage like 2022. Even better, pricing remains more than reasonable, as is quite evident in this lovely trio of 2022s on offer today.

Leading off is the overachieving 1er Cru Montmains. Collet's five plots were all planted between 1970 and 1985 and all are within the original Montmains lieu-dit on rocky, shallow soils of Kimmeridgian limestone. There is virtually no clay at all in these plots, so the style of the wine is "Crisp, cool and precise ... a fine example of Montmains," according to Decanter, made all the more so by the stainless steel vinification and aging. However, the warm vintage certainly adds a layer of depth that offers perfect counter-point to the fine minerality and steely energy of the Montmains cru.

Both Jasper Morris and Allen Meadows found great favor in the intensity and density of the 1er Cru Les Forêts, from a high-density planting of 8,000 vines/ha. Vinification and aging in concrete egg give the 2022 exceptional balance, allowing just enough 2022 ripeness to shine while not going overboard. With 93-point potential per Morris, it's a sharp choice for fans of classic Chablis with a touch of modern flair.

Finally, the 94-point Valmur from a plot planted in 1972 offers "concentrated flavors that possess both impressive power and intensity before terminating in a compact, serious, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish" as noted by Allen Meadows of Burghound. With "plenty of energy" and the typical Valmur structure, the 2022 will cruise in the cellar for several years before reaching its apogee.

As even Chablis prices have begun to jump in recent years, sharp collectors should be taking a good look at domaine-direct offers like this to maximize their white Burgundy buck, especially if the put a premium on classic winemaking and terroir expression.

94V 93BH

The 2022 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru has a touch of reduction on the nose, but I appreciate the marine influence here: oyster shell and a tang of seaweed. The palate is well-balanced, with a keen thread of acidity and judicious use of oak. Smooth in texture, almost creamy towards the finish, it contains plenty of energy with a hint of pralines on the finish. It should age with style. Tasted it blind at the BIVB tasting in Chablis.

94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Aug 2024)

Generous but not dominant oak surrounds aromas of mostly ripe green fruit, white flower and petrol. It can also be found on the palate of the broad-shouldered and concentrated flavors that possess both impressive power and intensity before terminating in a compact, serious, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. As one would reasonably expect given that this is Valmur, it's a big wine that's going to require at least moderate patience.

2022 Jean Collet Montmains Chablis 1er Cru (750ml)

In bottle (just a small lot – most to follow later). A stainless steel cuvée. Pale in colour, the bouquet is quite restrained. Just a few stones coming out. The palate is much cooler and the reductive element clearly comes through. Excellent persistence. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted Jul 2023.

92 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy (Dec 2023)

Crisp, cool and precise on the palate, there is plenty of sunny, ripe peach fruit, but also a strident line of acidity which is more to the fore at the moment. Needs a few months to balance out, but it will be a fine example of Montmains from a warmer vintage. The estate dates back to 1792.

91 points, Andy Howard, Decanter (Oct 2023)

Pretty floral notes add a touch of elegance to the aromas of smoky mineral reduction and white orchard fruit. The notably finer, though not denser, middleweight flavors manage to be at once generous but reasonably precise while deliver solid depth and persistence on the balanced and nicely dry finale. This is a wine that could easily be enjoyed young but also repay 4 to 7 years of cellaring.

Pale lemon and lime. Here the reduction is more noticeable, but note that this wine has not yet been racked. There is noticeably more density here than the Montmains, a little lime rinse to the concentrated fruit, and fine length. Adequate tension this year. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted Jul 2023.

90-93 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy (Dec 2023)

A slightly riper if otherwise similar nose also reflects notes of smoky reduction and citrus confit though not quite the same floral influence. There is markedly better intensity to the denser and more powerful medium-bodied flavors that also flash more evident minerality on the moderately austere and quite dry finale. I like both the balance and the delivery and this is one to consider.

Turning to the estate's wheelhouse, don't miss the trio of top-flight, single-vineyard Zinfandels, highlighted by the WS96 Highwire Vineyard from the acclaimed 2023 vintage. The 2022 Fanucchi Wood Road Zinfandel Old Vine is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of juicy blackberries and baked plums on the nose open out to suggestions of unsmoked cigars, dried rose, tilled soil, and wild fungi. The full-bodied palate is dense and muscular, with a rock solid structure of grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and earthy. The vines were planted over 100 years ago and have been trained up to chest level to increase air circulation and sun exposure for the berries.

96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Apr 2024)

A briar patch in a glass, this is a zesty, old-school Zin, with wild berry and black cherry flavors framed by chunky chocolate, espresso and green peppercorn accents. Ends with appealingly rustic tannins. Drink now through 2035. 244 cases made.

2022 Domaine Durieu Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Lucile Avril (750ml)

Domaine Durieu has been one of our most successful and enduring direct-import relationships over the past several years, with the flagship Cuvée Lucile Avril reaching all-time best seller status at B-21. We recently tasted the 2022 with François Durieu earlier this year, and it more than met our expectations. Now, a brand new, glowing 97-point review from James Suckling's senior Rhône critic puts the exclamation point on another stunning rendition that picks up right where Durieu's previous showstoppers left off.

"A great masterpiece of elegance and finesse." - Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com

"With medium to full body, a beautifully textured mouthfeel, and ripe tannins ... [it] brings a more classic, broad, textured profile," according to Jeb Dunnuck. In other words, the 2022 Lucile Avril is a crystal clear expression of Durieu's signature winemaking style, with an emphasis on balance and freshness (he uses no oak on any of his cuvées). It bears repeating, this wine is always one of our top-selling items in the category, so our legions of Durieu fans are in for a true classic that is, once again, one of the sharpest buys of the vintage at our domaine-direct pricing.

A great masterpiece of elegance and finesse, with a cornucopia of wild herb, dried flower and red berry aromas. Huge concentration and power, but it still moves very gracefully on the full-bodied palate. A stunningly long, pure and refined finish that doesn’t want to let go. Drink or hold.

2022 Clos des Papes Rouge (750ml)
Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France

The Avril family, their renowned parcels planted adjacent to the ruins of the old papal towers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, have been consistently bottling brilliant wines for decades. Among my very favorites – my personal collection spans multiple vintages – these are wines of unmistakable breed and character; a complete joy to experience. Originally established in the 18th century, their primary parcel is augmented by seventeen old vine plots throughout the appellation, adding further dimension to a wine already at the very highest levels of quality. Over the last few vintages, my notes indicate ever improved character. Paul-Vincent has bottled even more in a long line of rock stars. Draconian selections followed daily passes through each of his parcels, painstakingly clipping each vine for nothing but the very finest berries.

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape is showing beautifully, with the sun-kissed style of the vintage yet more depth and density than most in the vintage. Blackberries, Provençal garrigue, spice, and saddle leather all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with the classic elegance of the estate in its medium to full-bodied, layered, multi-dimensional style. It's one of the wines of the vintage and will have two decades of longevity.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2024)

Despite a hailstorm that destroyed approximately one-third of the crop this year, Paul-Vincent Avril managed to produce a wine with the same grape proportions as in previous years, thanks to his vineyard's diverse and fragmented nature. So, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape from Clos des Papes reveals a delicate, aromatic bouquet of peony, gooseberry, lilac, flowers and cherries mingled with delicate notes of fennel and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, sappy and layered, it's perfectly textured with velvety, delicate tannins enhanced by bright acids and a long, ethereal finish. Although the Mourvèdre is slightly dominant at this stage, this wine is unquestionably poised for great aging potential.

97 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Sep 2024)

The alluring 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape won me over in a heartbeat. Vivid licorice, sage, blueberry, lavender, red and black cherry as well as crushed flowers hail from the glass. Full-bodied and intense, the 2022 packs ample flavor concentration yet always maintains balance through lifting freshness. Polished tannins neatly structure this ambitious 2022 that has the potential to age gracefully for at least two decades.

96+ points, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous (Jun 2024)

A richly styled, opulent Châteauneuf that offers a streamlined cascade of ripe cherry, licorice root and toasted chestnut. Mineral energy keeps this powering long distance, with a smoldering foundation of iron. Starts off silky in feel, with a caressing texture quickly firmed up by fine tannins that hold real power. Hints of wet soil and baking spices detail the long, winding finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2026 through 2042.

96 points, Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator (Jan 2025)

A silky, textural and harmonious red with notes of dark cherries, fresh blackberries, dried thyme, currants and some mild spices. It's medium-bodied with finely grained tannins. Elegant and graceful, silky and bright. Fresh center palate with plenty of vitality and a caressing texture. Precise and harmonious with a pure expression of fruit at the center and a vibrant, spicy finish. Drink or hold.

96 points, James Suckling (Apr 2024)

A touch less Mourvèdre this year, but not enough to change the profile of the wine, which is fairly classic albeit pretty bombastic in 2022. Raspberry and black cherry, ripe and exuberant. Full but not massive, the alcohol is present, slightly warming the finish. Tannins are a little grainy, so I would give this time to settle before broaching. Succulent and juicy, with a touch of liquorice. Vincent Avril believes the wine could close down quite early on. So drink young, or (even better) wait until 2030. All destemmed, aged in old foudres.

The iconic Clos Apalta is arguably Chile's greatest wine, with a critical track record to rival even the First Growth Bordeaux titans. Previous vintages have notched multiple 100-point scores, nabbed Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year title, and accumulated pretty much every superlative and measure of praise you can think of in the world of fine wine, so it's no surprise to see the newly released 2022 grand vin flirt with perfection once again.

"It's an absolutely sensational red from this team that comes close to topping out my scale." - Jeb Dunnuck

This 99-point expression is further evidence that "Clos Apalta is one of those rare Chilean wines that reliably showcases the characteristics of each vintage while maintaining a consistent house style," as described by Vinous' Joaquin Hidalgo. Indeed, the cool 2022 growing season produced a Clos that Jeb Dunnuck praises as "brilliantly balanced, seamless, medium to full-bodied red that has ultra-fine tannins, integrated acidity, and a great finish." The wine's fresh, vineyard-expressive character melds beautifully with the estate's signature style developed over the years by famed Bordeaux consultant Michel Rolland. The result is a delicious Bordeaux-inspired blend reflecting its exceptional Chilean terroir that promises savvy collectors over two decades of pleasurable drinking.

99JD 99JS 98V #65 Top 100

The Grand Vin 2022 Clos Apalta checks in as 68% Carménère, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Merlot that spent two years in 70% new French oak. Smoking notes of black raspberries, leafy herbs, iron, and violet carry to a brilliantly balanced, seamless, medium to full-bodied red that has ultra-fine tannins, integrated acidity, and a great finish. It's an absolutely sensational red from this team that comes close to topping out my scale. I love it today yet see no reason it shouldn't evolve for 15+ years.

99 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2025)

The carmenere character is more obvious and confidently transparent this year, but in a really complex and layered way. Cedar, black olives, graphite, paprika and hints of pepper and iodine. It’s well rounded, with a light sanguine note to the ripe fruit. The tannins are fine-grained yet polished. The lengthy finish doesn't want to stop. 68% carmenere, 22% cabernet sauvignon and 10% merlot. Drink from 2027.

99 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (Apr 2025)

The 2022 Clos Apalta is 68% Carménère, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot from Apalta. This aged primarily in French oak vats with 10% of the blend in 225-liter Bordeaux barrels. It opens with black fruit, a delicate ash note, underbrush, boldo and gentle spice over subtle oak. Blueberry, blackberry and sour cherry aromas complete the aromatic profile. On the palate, this is dry for the house style, with medium structure, refined grip and juicy flow. The finish is long and finely tuned. This vintage offers a more restrained version of Clos Apalta. It's less opulent than usual but with captivating nuance and poise. The 2022 is a terroir-driven response to a cooler year.

This is really something for the Prieure. The aromas are vivid and bright and so, so perfumed. Violets, other flowers and citrus blossoms too. Medium- to full-bodied with ultrafine polished tannins that go on and on. Cashmere texture. Long and seductive. Best after 2029.

96 points, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

Enticing aromatics, crushed rose petals, with a kick of dark cassis and blueberry fruits on the opening, well balanced, enjoyable, delivered with skill and retains the appellation typicity while not sacrificing the exuberance of the year. Good quality. One to age, you can feel the tannins holding everything firmly in place at this point. 32hl/h yield.

94 points, Jane Anson (Mar 2025)

This 2022 has a blend led by 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. A rather sweet, smoky and brooding character on the nose, with blackcurrant, blackberry, toasted liquorice, tar and mint. The palate follows on from this dark and somewhat brooding nose with a polished and finely integrated style, with powdery and dark substance, a fine grip of rich tannins, and toasted blackberry and olive fruits. There is quite a bit of spirity oak lactone here, but this will integrate given time, and it does not detract from the cohesive structure and wealth of dark fruits. A very impressive Margaux, the structure and holding up well throughout, even into the finish and length, where the tannins linger long. A smart 2022 from Prieuré-Lichine, an estate that deserves a greater following. Put this one in your cellar. Tasted twice. The alcohol on the label is 13.5%.

94 points, Chris Kissack, Wine Independent (Jun 2025)

Tobacco, dark chocolate, blackcurrants, plums, and rose petals on the nose, with sandalwood and cinnamon adding complexity. Dark, brooding flavors with toasted elements alongside dark fruits. Less vibrant but deeply finessed. Integrated tannins, acidity lifting the finish. Spice and toast linger, ending with a liquorice note. Needs a few years to fully open.
