| Chardonnay from Puligny Montrachet, Burgundy, France | ||

B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More "This too is very good, indeed it could pass for a lower-level villages wine." - Allen Meadows, Burghound Sharp Burgundy fans know that some of the smartest buys in the region are the Bourgogne AOC bottlings from top-tier producers. First and foremost, these wines typically carry the signature of the Burgundy's greatest winemaking talents, and ever more frequently, they're also made from single parcels, so they show the true terroir character and individual personality that we all love in a great Burgundy. Such is the case with Domaine de Montille's 2022 Clos du Chateau Bourgogne Blanc. Sourced from a single vineyard inside the Puligny-Montrachet village, it's a standout for its pedigree and a perfect example of a wine that punches well above the technical classification on its label. "Baby Puligny" all the way with its high-toned floral and mineral charm, it's also "rich, delicious, and beautifully textured" and can easily stand up to many lesser producers' village Puligny wines at a fraction of the price.

|
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More An impressive, limited production CDP lauded by critics and coveted by Rhone enthusiasts, the richly textured 97 pt. 2020 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Les Hauts Lieux reveals powerful, mineral-tinged aromas and fresh layered fruit matched by fine acidity, its firm, muscular tannins built to evolve over the next decade - simply a brilliant Chateauneuf du Pape that collectors will want to reserve a spot for in their cellars. Located at the northeastern corner of the Chateauneuf du Pape AOC, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne has been owned by the Daumen family since 1905, its highly rated Southern Rhone blends crafted by talented fifth generation winemaker Jean-Paul Daumen for the last three decades. One of the first estates in the region to convert to biodynamic practices under Jean-Paul, the domain farms 15 hectares in the Chateauneuf du Pape AOC, a single contiguous north-facing vineyard sheltered from the extreme heat and planted with mostly Grenache in a mosaic of limestone and quartz soils in the Mont Redon lieu-dit. While some of the estate's Grenache are over 100 years of age, winemaker Daumen focuses his cuvees on specific terroirs rather than the age of the vines, the Les Hauts Lieux cuvee a field blend of hand harvested grapes grown at the highest elevation, blended together parcel by parcel from vines averaging 70 years of age. Employing what he calls "severe" selection while dramatically limiting yields, Daumen co-fermented the blended grapes with natural yeasts in cement tanks, then aged the 2020 Les Hauts Lieux CDP in large oak foudres for 18 months, bottling without fining or filtering with additional time in the cellar to yield rich concentration and superb depth. Consistently garnering critical praise including a spot on the Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2020, the Wine Advocate declared, "Jean-Paul Daumen continues to fashion some of the top wines of the vintage, in just about every vintage" - the elegant 97 pt. 2020 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Les Hauts Lieux offering an outstanding opportunity for collectors and fans of the finest Chateauneuf du Pape rouge to stock the cellar with this meticulously crafted, hard to acquire gem at an unheard of price.

| 2023 Chateau Beaucastel Rouge (750ml) | ||
| Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France | ||
|
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More One of the most anticipated Rhone releases in any vintage is Beaucastel's reference-point Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and the 97-point 2023 delivers everything we expect from this iconic estate. "... yet another outstanding red Beaucastel with the potential to match or even outperform the delicious 2022." - Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous The warm, dry growing season provided optimal conditions for all the estate's varietals to excel and the finished wine is classic Beaucastel in all respects. Jeb Dunnuck notes, "It has the purity, medium to full-bodied richness, and ripe, yet still fresh and lively style of the vintage and brings plenty of mid-palate depth, sweet tannins, and a great finish." The year saw a higher-than-usual Mourvedre content in the blend, so you can count on this rendition to cruise in the cellar, but the freshness and vibrancy of the Grenache components (with help of the highly aromatic Terret Nori, Vaccarese, and Muscardin) make it a true charmer right out of the gate. James Suckling's Rhone critic Stuart Pigott declares it "full-bodied but with a lightness of touch. Then the power and stony intensity pour over you in a giant wave. The freshness is extraordinary for this hot and dry vintage." In other words, one of France's leading wine estates hit another home run, and collectors can add this superb rendition to their cellars for a razor-sharp price.

| 2018 Enzo Boglietti Barolo Arione (750ml) | ||
| Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy | ||
|
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More Described by the Wine Advocate as crafting "some of the richest, most deeply flavored Barolos in Piedmont,", this selection of highly rated Cru Barolos from Enzo Boglietti rank among the Piedmont's top bargains, each sourced from small family-owned parcels spread across Barolo's top Cru's and all promising to age over the next decade or more at an incredible value price. Ending his family's decades' long practice of selling grapes to the local coop, Enzo Boglietti established his La Morra winery with 3 hectares of vineyards in 1991, counted among the group of rebellious young winemakers at the time producing a more modern style Barolo crafted to be immediately accessible. Over the years Enzo has moderated his approach, limiting the use of new French oak barriques and reducing extraction times during fermentation to produce elegantly styled, site expressive Barolos from some of the region's top Crus, his vineyards now spanning 20 hectares across the Langhe. Described by James Suckling as "clean and fresh", the appealing 92 pt. 2018 Enzo Boglietti Boiolo is sourced from a 1.95 hectare parcel at 300-350 meters above sea level on the northern border of Rocche dell'Annunziata, while the aromatic 94 pt. 2016 Enzo Boglietti Fossati expresses the typical character of the Fossati cru with floral aromatics and balsamic nuances, summed up by the Wine Spectator's Bruce Sanderson as "graceful yet packs a punch." From the warmer, protected Cru situated between the upper portion of Fossati and Cerequio, James Suckling calls the 96 pt. 2015 Enzo Boglietti Case Nere "impressively refined" while describing the 95 pt. 2016 Enzo Boglietti Brunate as "fullbodied" and finishing "tight, dense and long," sourced from a tiny half hectare Brunate parcel known for producing elegant, silky Barolo with deep complexity. From the southernmost Cru in Serralunga that exhibits a "distinctly wild, feral quality strong on iron and mineral" according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the refined 95 pt. 2018 Enzo Boglietti Barolo Arione is his most "pinot-like" Barolo according to Enzo, while the 94 pt. 2018 Enzo Boglietti Brunate delivers Brunate's legendary combination of elegance and power "balanced by juicy, acidity" according to the Wine Independent's Susan Hulme with "a lovely fresh finish." Described as "a young producer on the rise" crafting "sumptuous Barolos" by critic Antonio Galloni over a decade ago, these elegantly crafted Cru Barolo selections from Enzo Boglietti overdeliver in a big way, priced at a mere fraction of his competitors and offering a terrific opportunity to mix a case and enjoy Boglietti's full range of top scoring Cru Barolo reflecting the region's diverse terroirs for years to come.

B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More Domaine Georges Vernay, founded by Francis Vernay in 1937, is a third-generation, venerable wine producer, located in the heart of Condrieu, France. The efforts of Francis Vernay were instrumental in the creation of the official Condrieu appellation in 1940. In later years, Francis was succeeded by his son Georges, who played a key role in restricting the geographical boundaries of Condrieu, preserving the character of the appellation and ensuring its future greatness. In 1996, Christine Vernay, Georges' daughter, took over as winemaker and General Manager of the Estate. Recognized as one of the great winemakers in France, several of her wines have recently been awarded the coveted 100 points in the world’s top wine publications; remarkable - since the 2011 vintage, not a score below 96 from Jeb Dunnuck for the Coteau de Vernon. Among the top two or three Condrieu in any vintage, the Coteau de Vernon comes from very old vines planted in 1936 and 1960, on the steep granite slopes just behind the Vernay estate.

| Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France | ||

B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More Domaine Giraud is a relative newcomer in the Southern Rhone, crafting its first wine in 1974 from 4 hectares of rented vines and producing its first estate cuvee in 1998 under second generation siblings Marie and Francois Giraud. Spanning over 17 hectares spread over 64 separate parcels across the appellation, Giraud's estate owned vineyards are planted with vines averaging 60-80 years of age in a diverse mix of pebble, sand, clay, and limestone soils, each parcel farmed organically with minimal treatments and managed manually from harvesting to sorting. Sourced primarily from old-vine Grenache including parcels in Les Gallimardes and La Crau, the elegant 2020 Domaine Giraud Chateauneuf-du-Pape Tradition Rouge is a blend of 80% Grenache and 5% Mourvedre aged for 18 months in cement vats and 15% Syrah matured in used Bordeaux barriques and bottled without filtering or fining, crafted in a vineyard-driven style with "relatively simple, unadorned winemaking" according to Wine Advocate's Joe Czerwinski with fine-grained tannins that frame the intense, luscious fruit and predict a long and satisfying evolution in the cellar. A small-production cuvee that wasn't produced at all in 2021 due to frost damage, the enticing 95-point 2020 Domaine Giraud Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Gallimardes Rouge comes from a terroir-expressive vintage "producing athletic, elegant wines of intensity and panache" according to Decanter's Matt Walls, an under-the-radar gem priced far below the region's higher profile estates and expertly crafted to reward savvy collectors with over a decade of pleasurable drinking ahead.

B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More One of the estates to suffer the heaviest losses of Napa's wildfires in 2020, Burgess Cellars rose undaunted from that calamity to produce a stunning range of 2021s, blessed in part by what Antonio Galloni calls "a fabulous vintage." Indeed, as the 2021s have come to the market, we've seen no shortage of effusive praise from all corners, and winemaker Meghan Zobeck really made the most of a stellar year, as we can plainly see in the 2021 Promiscua. "An enticing, delicious version ... balanced and fresh throughout." - Wine Spectator Made from the original estate vineyard (now called Sorenson Vineyard) along with fruit from Clos Abeille and Oak Knoll's Quartz Creek site, the 96-point Promiscua is an exceptional example of what the 2021 vintage brought to the table, namely finesse, refinement, and aromatic nuance. Aged in just 20% new oak, the 2021 Promiscua shines for its purity of fruit and transparency of personality, as Zobeck's winemaking decisions emphasize a more restrained and elegant version of Napa Cabernet that we too seldom see in this price tier. Speaking of which, we just secured this parcel at unbeatable pricing that comes in 30% lower than the rest of the market, so if you thought the price of top-flight, estate Napa Cab had gone out of reason, think again. B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More San Vicente is as unconventional a project as you'll find in Rioja. When the Eguren family ripped up their vineyard in the early 1980s and replanted it with a massale selection of clones from their lowest-yielding vines, the consternation and ridicule came from all corners of the region. But he who laughs last laughs best, and now the Eguren family's efforts have been totally vindicated, as the wine is coveted Rioja collector's treasure year in and year out. "The 2021 San Vicente showcases the completeness of the year with a rare combination of power and elegance" - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate At its debut one of the first single-cru bottlings that Rioja had ever seen, San Vicente has changed the region's dynamics over the past few decades, with numerous producers now following the Eguren family's lead and going for a site-specific, terroir-driven approach to their wines. A true original and still one of the best, San Vicente has once again stunned critics left and right with the 97-point 2021 vintage. "This has immediate charm and long-term aging potential. It is already expressive but will deepen beautifully over time," writes Vinous' Joaquin Hidalgo. The wine's refined, modern style and impeccable class have garnered the San Vicente a devoted following that will no doubt go head over heels for this latest expression, especially at our unmatched private client price that beats the rest of the market by a wide margin.

Read More "Jim Binns continues to expand in impressive fashion ... As always, the wines are done in a rich, unctuous style, with extended maceration and tons of depth. With the right sites, that style can be incredibly exciting." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous After achieving a staggering twenty-seven 100-point scores during his tenure with winemaker Manfred Krankl at Sine Qua Non, Jim Binns established Andremily in 2012 on the outskirts of Ventura County, just south of Santa Barbara, naming it after his two children, Andrew and Emily. Sourcing grapes from top Santa Barbara vineyards including the legendary Bien Nacido and White Hawk, Jim has also expanded his use of estate-grown fruit since his recent purchase of the 39-acre Slide Hill Vineyard in Edna Valley, a move that has had "a profound impact on the wine" according to Galloni. "This roster delivers a comparable style [to SQN] in its density and opulence, albeit with even more chocolate-tinged richness and, somewhat paradoxically, more finesse." - Matthew Luczy, Wine Advocate We've just received our first allocation of the 2022 reds – a "brilliant" Mourvèdre and a #11 Syrah that's "heavenly stuff" – and if they're any indication, this vintage is shaping up to be another gangusters set, with both wines coming in at 96-98 points from Jeb Dunnuck. Needless to say, fans of Andremily, or full-throttle, luxury California reds in general, will not want to miss these. B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More "Passing Time is a serious contender in the fine wine scene of Washington State ... I’ll certainly keep my eye on how this project progresses." - Eric Guido, Vinous Today's offer is a special one for our Florida family. While you may or may not have heard of Passing Time, a thrilling new player in boutique Washington Cabernet that's making huge waves in the critical press, you no doubt know the founder, legendary Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino. Working with acclaimed winemaker Chris Peterson from several of the state's most prized vineyards (including Champoux, Klipsun, and Wallula), this project is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with. Having recently tasted the entire range of 2022s ourselves, we can wholeheartedly stand behind the raft of monster scores and impressive accolades that follow these wines. Starting off, the JD94 Red Blend is "an impressive wine at any price point but offers outstanding value" at our sub-$60 price. However, it's the appellation-specific bottlings that truly steal the show, each one a quintessential representation of its origins. The "impeccably structured and detailed" 2022 Red Mountain Cabernet is arguably the cream of the crop (but we're really just splitting hairs, as they're all so compelling). It positively "vibrates with energetic red and black fruit flavors, supported by fine-grained tannins and a lively line, finishing long and shimmery," according to Lisa Perrotti-Brown. If you after something that reminds you "a touch of Château Montrose in Saint-Estèphe," don't miss the Horse Heaven Hills Cab. This double 97-point Left Bank lookalike is perfectly poised to cruise for decades in the cellar. Finally, the double 97-point Walla Walla Cabernet draws from two iconic sites, Seven Hills and Pepper Bridge, to deliver "a rock-solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness to match the vivacious, muscular black fruit, finishing long and fragrant." It's rare to find a range in which each wine showcases such stunning class and sophistication in its own particular way, but Passing Time is well on the way to distinguishing itself as one of the most exciting new names in collectible Cabernet, and you'll be thrilled to have any and all of these standout performers in your cellar for decades to come, especially at our unbeatable market-best pricing.

For nearly a decade Eduardo worked to rebuild the iconic Viña Errázuriz, restoring his family's 19th century estate to its former glory. As Eduardo was gaining ground, California's most famous man of the vine paid the country a visit in 1990. Robert Mondavi fell in love with Chile and would soon be introduced to his counterpart in the region. By 1995, the two had reached a pioneering agreement – Seña was born. For four long, grueling years the two passionate visionaries toiled over vineyard sites in search of the perfect terroir for their dream wine. This was to be Chile's icon above all others. Site was paramount. Located in the Valle de Aconcagua, on a 42 hectare colluvial vineyard of well drained gravel, rock and loam, the Seña vineyard is planted to the perfect mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Syrah. The slightly cooler temperatures of this elevated, sloping site allow for long, slow ripening. The Seña vineyard is often harvested two weeks after its nearest neighbor. Precious few wines in the country will compete; perhaps none – after all, perfection is incredibly rare. This is a wine above all others ever bottled in Chile. A wine which is rightly described by Neal Martin as "The peripatetic wine that goes around the world challenging and, let it be said, often defeating First Growths in blind tastings."

B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More From one of the most undervalued AOC's in Southern France, legendary Saint Emilion winemaker Jean-Luc Thunevin and Roussillon-born grower Jean-Roger Calvet have crafted a selection of powerful blends from old vine fruit that Southern Rhone fans won't want to miss, an exciting range of delicious, age worthy reds among the Languedoc's finest values at affordable pricing perfect for mixing a case. Hiking in the French Pyrenees past the magnificent centuries' old fortresses perched above the Roussillon plain, a chance meeting two decades ago along the Route de Cathar trail became a windfall for wine lovers, resulting in a partnership between local Cotes du Roussillon grower Jean-Roger Calvet and Bordeaux vigneron Jean-Luc Thunevin of Chateau Valandraud, the superstar Saint Emilion winemaker called "a major force in the global wine world" by the Wine Enthusiast's Roger Voss. Intrigued by the magnificent black schist soils and rugged terroir around the Roussillon village of Maury, Thunevin invested in a small parcel of vines to supplement Jean-Roger's existing vineyards in the region, crafting their first vintage in a makeshift winery in 2001 and expanding the estate to 65 hectares to produce small amounts of terroir-focused wines from sustainably farmed Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah and Carignan. A blend of 60% Mourvedre and 40% Grenache from vines averaging 30 years of age, the entry level 93 pt. 2019 Thunevin-Calvet Cotes du Roussillon Villages l'Amourette was aged 16 months in concrete vats, its rich spiced and peppery fruit balancing earthy minerality and finishing long and fresh with smooth tannins built for years of enjoyment. A blend of mostly Grenache with about a third Syrah from vines ranging from 40 to more than 100 years old, the "formidable" 94 pt 2019 Thunevin-Calvet Cotes du Roussillon Villages Hugo is "a joy to drink" according to Jeb Dunnuck, offering bright dark fruit hinting of graphite and toasted spices while the rich and muscular 2019 95 pt. Thunevin-Calvet Cotes du Roussillon Villages Divaea has a "balanced, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and outstanding length," the blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Grenache sourced from vines averaging 40 years and aged in new French oak for 18 months. Crafted from 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah ranging from 80 to 120 years old, the powerful and elegant 97 pt. 2019 Thunevin-Calvet Cotes du Roussillon Villages Les Trois Marie is the estate's top cuvee aged for 18 months in large oak foudres, layering concentrated dark fruit with impeccably balanced, plush tannins and promising another decade of pleasurable drinking ahead. From a region remaining decidedly off the beaten track much like the Route de Cathar trail itself, Antonio Galloni of Vinous called the best of the Cotes du Roussillon reds "the world's sexiest, most inexpensive wines," these top rated 2019 Thunevin-Calvet cuvees offering a terrific introduction for newbies to the Languedoc's most exceptional terroir-expressive reds as well as a great deal for savvy Southern Rhone fans seeking delicious, age worthy blends that deliver outstanding value.

| 2017 Castello Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino Filo di Seta (750ml) | ||
| Sangiovese from Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy | ||
|
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More Perched on a hilltop overlooking northwest Montalcino, Castello Romitorio has built a solid reputation over the last three decades for its exquisite, age worthy Brunello di Montalcino wines, producing a range of highly rated selections "able to deliver the most classic and profound expressions of Brunello from nearly every vintage," according to Vinous critic Eric Guido and certain to thrill Brunello fans and collectors at best on the market pricing. Surrounded by dense, verdant forests with a history dating back to Roman times, the abandoned, partly renovated Castello Romitorio was purchased in 1984 by esteemed Italian artist Sandro Chia, who set about completing the manor house renovations and overhauling its vineyards with the goal of reestablishing its rich winemaking legacy. Located at altitudes ranging from 220 to 500 meters, the northwest-facing vineyards are cooler than most of Montalcino, divided into smaller one to two hectare parcels and grown in a patchwork of varied soils including galestro, clay and albarese that are vinified separately before blending, the diversity contributing balance and depth. Crafted by Sandro's son and winemaker Filippo Chia, the fresh and perfumed 94 pt. 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is a harmonious expression of terroir and vintage boasting bright fruit and vibrant acidity, described as "a total success" by Eric Guido of Vinous offering "so much value." Sourced from Romitorio's oldest plots planted in 1987 with local Sangiovese clones sourced from Biondi-Santi and Soldera, the powerful and lush 98 pt. 2015 Riserva has been crafted only 9 times in the last 40 vintages, described as "full-bodied with juicy tannins and a long, flavorful finish" by James Suckling while summed up simply as "flat out stunning" by Eric Guido. Situated on the lowest slopes of Romitorio directly in front of the Montosoli hill and considered one of the best areas of Montalcino, the Filo di Seta vineyard is named for a nearby creek (Filo de Seta translating as "thread of silk"), the rich and dense 95 pt. 2017 Filo de Seta called "one of the top wines" of the vintage by Eric Guido who describes it as "mixing the most delicate and vivid fruit with the body of a well-muscled dancer." Boasting distinctive labels featuring Sandro's original paintings, each of these Castello Romitorio selections reflects the combined dedication and artistic perfection of Sandro and his son Filippo, all elegantly transparent and impeccably balanced Brunello wines to make room for in the cellar and enjoy over the next decade or more.

And if you need to reload on previous vintages, be sure to lock in on the highly acclaimed 2021s, as well as a handful or rare magnums from 2019 and 2020!

| 2022 Passing Time Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml) | ||
| Cabernet Sauvignon from Red Mountain, Washington State | ||
|

| Nerello Mascalese from Sicily, Italy | ||

B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More As consulting enologist with multiple 100 pt. scores to his credit, Italy's Carlo Ferrini knows a thing or two about crafting exceptional wine, his own top-rated Brunellos described as "Montalcino's best-kept secret" by the Wine Spectator's Robert Camuto. Setting his sights on Sicily's Mount Etna, these small production selections from Ferrini's Podere Giodo hit the mark, crafted from old vines ranging up to 100 years of age to deliver exceptional depth reflecting their rich volcanic origins, two enticing wines for Mount Etna aficionados and a perfect introduction for anyone looking to explore the region's best. After a decade of consulting with some of Sicily's most renowned estates including Tasca D'Almerita, Pietradolce and Le Casematte , winemaker Carlo Ferrini purchased some small parcels on the north-facing terraced black lava slopes of Etna, planted with extraordinary low yielding, pre-phylloxera Nerello Mascalese vines averaging 80-100 years along with a small parcel of the indigenous white Carricante, the vines "a mere" 50 years of age. Trained to the traditional low-bush goblet method (called "albarello" in Italian meaning "little tree"), the parcels are located at high altitudes from 800 to 950 meters, above the official limits of the Etna DOC (widely considered to have been drawn too low) and classified under the Sicilia denomination. Boasting lush aromatics evocative of citrus and wild herbs, the zesty 95 pt. 2021 Sicilia Carricante is an exceptional follow up to Giodo's inaugural white Etna release in 2020 described by the Wine Advocate's Monica Larner as "proof that some of the most interesting wines from Etna today are the whites." Producing only 2,500 bottles from less than a half hectare plot, Carlo aged the enticing 2021 Sicilia Carricante for about 6 months in stainless steel tanks on the lees with 10 months longer in bottle, yielding fresh energetic fruit with distinct nuances of flinty crushed stone on a mouthwatering finish. Sourced from a 1.5-hectare parcel and fermented in stainless steel, Carlo aged the 2019 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese in large oak casks for 18 months with additional time in concrete and another 12 months in bottle, yielding layered fragrant fruit and balanced acidity with a long-lasting finish. Reminiscent of a meticulously crafted Pinot Noir, the elegant 96 pt. 2019 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese boasts bright fresh red fruit hinting of spice and elegant minerality, the old vine fruit yielding a powerfully concentrated red that's ready to enjoy now "but will be great in a few years" according to critic James Suckling, available in both 750 ml. and cellar worthy magnums for collectors of Italian wines to enjoy for the next decade. Expertly crafted to showcase their unique volcanic terroir, these exceptional top-rated Giodo Alberelli di Giodo selections from superstar winemaker Carlo Ferrini are equally intriguing for fans of Sicilian wines already familiar with Etna's alluring appeal and any Italian wine lover wanting to explore the region's best, now a terrific opportunity to mix a case at value pricing.

B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More If you're a mezcal fan or collector and you haven't jumped on board with 5 Sentidos yet, you're missing out on some of the most compelling, artfully crafted offerings in the category. The brainchild of American Jason Cox, the project began as a collection of house mezcals selected for his upstart Oaxaca restaurant El Destilado. This transplant with an insatiable thirst for artisan agave spirits spent countless hours and miles traversing Oaxaca and its surrounding environs, scouting out the best artisan mezcal producers no one had yet heard of. We're talking true family operations that run on sweat and calloused hands and that produce stunningly complex, singular expressions you won't find anywhere else. Today, the 5 Sentidos range offers a dizzying array of options and styles, and the two on offer here are just a glimpse of the full spectrum, but once you get a hold of them, you'll find yourself diving into the deep end. The Espandin El Capón, from Alberto Martinez's La Escondida palenque in the mountainous village of Santa Catarina Albarradas, is "ultra-traditional destilado de agave from a true artisan of the craft" according to B-21 Spirits Buyer Andrew Kitz. Indeed, Martinez' mastery of clay pot distillation, a centuries-long practice here, is on full display here. High-toned, sweet aromatics give off tons of nuanced complexity, but it's on the "tour de force" palate where the style truly shines. With loads of weight and viscosity, the clay pot pedigree is evident, yet it's also expertly balanced for a profile that fans of this style will absolutely love. Like the El Capon, the Pechuga de Mole Poblano from Defino Tobón Mejia is a showstopping representation of the style. Defino ferments theAgave cupreata(aka Papalote) mash with a freshly slaughtered chicken from his back yard, dousing it in homemade mole poblanoin the process. "A veritable bomb of savory, meaty goodness," the Pechuga de Mole is a wild ride of complexity and intrigue. As Andrew notes, "Delfino is absolutely nailing the style, and it's no wonder this expression has developed such an avid legion of fans." If you're already familiar with 5 Sentidos, you'll no doubt want to add these gems to your shelf at home, and if you haven't discovered them yet, this pair is the perfect introduction to the top-tier craftsmanship that goes into all of Jason Cox's selections.
