Good luck not falling in love with this, with its intense, concentrated depths of citrus, slate, graphite, spiced pear and cold ash, vivid, drawn out and full of character. Domaine Maurice & Anne-Marie Chapuis is a family estate that has been based in Aloxe-Corton for 6 generations, Pierre Chapuis winemaker today, with 1ha of south/southeast-facing slopes in Corton Charlemagne - and it seems significant that they have chosen to release a small amount through the Place de Bordeaux this year.

New to the Place de Bordeaux this year. From a 1ha plot of vines in Corton Charlemagne. Soft white flowers and subtle toasted edge on the nose, charred caramel, jasmine and vanilla pasty. Bright and sharp on the palate, lean and almost austere save for the thickness of the texture with a spiced honey and pear edge. Angular but so delicious and well worked, full of nuance and interest giving the wine a complex whole. Crystalline puritty, lovely sense of confidence and length. Clearly still young and tense, with some constriction, but graceful, energetic, lively, spiced and full of interest. I love it, long and lingering. Balanced, invigorating and uber charming. The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru needs a little swirling to unlock notes of fresh apricots, honey-drizzled pears, and toasted almonds with touches of croissant and chalk dust. The medium-bodied palate reveals a silky texture and a quiet intensity of stone fruit flavors, with loads of mineral accents and a long citrusy finish.
