I began using B21 about 2 years ago. Wish I had found them sooner. They represent about 70% to 80 % of my liquor buys. Only the odd things are purchased elsewhere. Once you use them you will be hooked. Inventory, professional staff, quick shipping and competative pricing are what I really appreciate. Try them, you have nothing to lose and much to gain.

2016 Bodegas Manzanos Voche Reserva (750ml)
From Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Spanish wine fans searching for a steal of a deal on great Rioja need look no further than the outstanding, 93-point 2016 Bodegas Manzanos Voche Reserva. Offering deep, mouth-coating flavors of dark, earthy fruit and spiced vanilla with powerful, satiny tannins, it's structured to age while remaining an incredible value.

While Voche is a relatively new project from Bodegas Manzanos, the Manzanos family has been making wine along the Ebro River in Rioja for five generations, founding the oldest winery in Haro in 1801. Based mostly on old-vine fruit, the Voche Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo and the lesser-known Graciano, an inherently spicy, dark-skinned grape that enhances aromas and adds structure and freshness. Representing three distinct terroirs, the vineyards for the 2016 Voche Reserva include the oldest Graciano parcel in Rioja called El Barranco, its 70-year-old vines planted on sandy soil at around 400 meters of elevation. After fermenting in stainless steel, the powerful 2016 Voche Reserva aged for 24 months in 50% new and 50% second-use French oak, then 24 months longer in bottle, finishing "long and compact" according to Wine Spectator's Bruce Sanderson and built to evolve over the next decade.

From an exceptional vintage described by Decanter's Michael Schachner as "a benchmark year against which future stellar vintages will be measured," the muscular, opulent, 93-point 2016 Bodegas Manzanos Voche Reserva delivers layers of bold flavors with smoky, earthy undertones that will have Rioja fans reaching for it again and again over the next decade, which is easy to do at this unbeatable price.

93WS 93WE 92JS

Sweet oak, vanilla, cherry and bitter almond flavors converge in this muscular, balanced red. The oak still needs time to integrate, with ample fruit to offset it. The finish is long and compact. Tempranillo and Graciano. Best from 2024 through 2033. 700 cases made, 350 cases imported.

93 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Feb 2022)

Violet-red to the eye, this wine has a bouquet of cassis, saddle leather and clove. It feels good in the mouth, offering flavors of blackberry, strawberry, chocolate-covered coffee bean and vanilla. Satin tannins dissolve into a soft rose-petal finish.

93 points, Mike Desimone, Wine Enthusiast (Jul 2022)

Aromas of plums, blackberries, blueberries, dried herbs and cigar box. Full-bodied with round tannins. Creamy and fruity with a spicy, supple finish. Drink now.

2024 Ca dei Frati Lugana I Frati (750ml)
Turbiana from Lugana, Lombardy, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Equally appealing to Italian wine lovers seeking value and anyone looking for a deliciously crisp, well-crafted white wine at bargain pricing, the beautifully aromatic 2021 Ca dei Frati Lugana I Frati offers rich, ripe fruit and zesty mineral-driven acidity, reflecting its glacial origins overlooking the sparkling turquoise waters of Italy's Lake Garda and "always an excellent value" according to Robert Parker Jr., now bargain priced to easily become your new house Italian white.

Recognizing the area's potential for cultivating grapes for wine, Ca dei Frati founder Felice Dal Cero took over the rundown 18th century Frati farm on the southern shore of Lake Garda in 1939 and set about improving viticulture and modernizing winemaking over the next three decades alongside his son Pietro, who was instrumental in the creation of the Lugana DOC in 1969 and responsible for their first official bottling. Now run by third generation siblings Gian Franco, Anna Maria and winemaker Igino Dal Cero, the family run Ca' dei Frati winery is based in Lake Garda's historic village of Lugana di Sirmione, surrounded by estate vineyards planted with the indigenous Turbiana, a distinct varietal previously called Trebbiano di Lugana from which the Lugana white wine is made. Ranging up to 40 years of age on glacial calcareous and clay soils that limit yields and contribute minerality, the Turbiana vines enjoy the lakeside's unique microclimate of warm days and ever present drying breezes, enhancing even ripening while preserving freshness and keeping the well ventilated grapes free of mold. Crafted from 100% Turbiana and fermented in stainless steel, the crisp and appealing 2024 Lugana I Frati was aged on the lees in stainless for 6 months with another 2 months in bottle before release, yielding fresh, alluring aromas and richly textured fruit hinting of saline-tinged minerality and finishing with tantalizing acidity that begs for another sip.

Formerly a coveted discovery of tourists who flock to the shores of Lake Garda each summer, the secret is out on the bright and elegant 2021 Ca dei Frati Lugana I Frati, an easy to love and affordably priced Italian white wine crafted by one of the region's top producers that you'll find yourself reaching for again and again.

2021 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Signature (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California
B-21 Top Recommendation

"A serious wine in the making."

Jeb Dunnuck

From the pioneering winery on Napa's iconic Pritchard Hill, the bold and luscious 96 pt. 2021 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Signature features rich, aromatic dark fruit hinting of graphite and cedar layered with velvety tannins on a smooth and lasting finish, its age worthy complexity reflecting Chappellet's decades' long legacy as Cabernet Sauvignon experts and "a smoking good value" according to Jeb Dunnuck at a best on the market price.

Climbing the rocky slope above the intersection of the Silverado Trail and the Oakville Cross Road, the narrow drive winding up Pritchard Hill leads to the original pyramid shaped Chappellet winery built in 1968, surrounded by rustic gardens and meticulous vineyards with panoramic views of the valley and St. Helena off in the distance. Moving to Napa in the mid-1960's, Molly and Donn Chappellet heeded the advice of legendary winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff and purchased 320 acres in the rugged hills east of Oakville instead of the valley floor, establishing the first winery to plant at higher elevations in the region just a year after Robert Mondavi Winery opened its doors. Remaining one of the few family-owned wineries in Napa and now run by the second generation, Chappellet's estate vineyards are located above the fog line at elevations from 800 to 1800 feet, planted in well drained, rocky volcanic soils with low yielding vines that produce smaller, thick skinned berries with enhanced flavors and depth. Blending mostly mountain grown Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot, longtime winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus aged the elegant 2021 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Signature in French oak for about 20 months, yielding richly concentrated, vibrant fruit and integrated polished tannins poised to gain complexity over the next few decades.

Now home to a bevy of some of Napa's most exclusive producers including Bryant Family, Continuum, Ovid and Colgin, the sensational 96 pt. 2021 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Signature remains an incredible value, "a big overachiever" according to Vinous critic Antonio Galloni and a top rated Napa Cab boasting the pedigree of Pritchard Hill at a fraction of the price of its high profile neighbors and promising Napa Cab lovers years of pleasurable drinking ahead.

96D 95WE 94JD 94JS 94WI

It is a marvellously compact and coiled-up wine with a towering structure. Very beautifully fragrant dried purple flowers and herbs. Full-bodied with loads of succulent ripe blackberry, creme de cassis, graphite, and loamy earth. Very firm, tight-grained tannins form the base note of this wine, and the finish is long and rich in wild herbs and spices. Cellar worthy. It will release internationally in September 2024. It is rounded out with 6% Merlot.

96 points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter (Dec 2023)

An extra-dark color and heady aromas of crushed blueberries and blackberries leads to super-concentrated black fruits and milk chocolate on the palate, where silky tannins put a gentle grip around all that flavor. The wine is huge in pure fruit depth yet well polished in texture. Best from 2027–2034.

95 points, Jim Gordon, Wine Enthusiast (Apr 2024)

Leading off the Cabernet Sauvignon releases, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is a larger production release and is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and nearly equal portions of Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Merlot. Smoky black fruits, graphite, crushed stone, and tobacco notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, powerful 2021 offering ample mid-palate depth, a layered, textured, balanced mouthfeel, building tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It's a brilliant bottle of wine that will benefit from short-term cellaring and have over two decades of longevity.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2023)

Aromas of cassis and dark berries with sweet spices, dried orange peel and minty undertones. Hints of walnuts, too. Medium- to full-bodied with well-integrated, melting tannins. Very silky texture. Succulent and layered, ripe but bright and vivid. Delicious fruit. Long. Attractive now, but better after 2025.

94 points, James Suckling (Dec 2023)

The 2021 Signature Cabernet Sauvignon, with 8% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec, and 6% Merlot in the blend, is deep garnet-purple in color. It opens with evocative notes of warm cassis, blackberry pie, and kirsch followed by suggestions of menthol, dark chocolate, and anise. The full-bodied palate is packed with black fruit preserves and spicy layers, supported by plush tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long with a savory lift.

"By any measure, 2023 is a magnificent vintage." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Galloni isn't the only voice to be singing the praises of Napa's 2023 vintage. Winemakers and critics alike seem over the moon about the uniformly high quality of this cool, long growing season. Jeb Dunnuck already compares it to another modern classic: "Across the board, the 2023s stand out for their purity, vibrancy, and elegance, yet they still deliver depth, richness, and concentration. The top 2023s are unquestionably on the level of the 2016s." What this means for wine lovers is that there are tremendous bargains to be found if you know where to look, something that is becoming a rare occurrence in today's Napa market. Today's offer brings together a handful of the top QPR releases to hit the market recently, all at sub-$40 pricing and all showing the same combination of youthful expression and solid cellar potential, the hallmark of this great vintage.

The 94-point 2023 HGIII blend from cult phenom Hourglass is a "charming, sexy beauty" based on Merlot, crafted by winemaker Tony Biagi to be an immediately accessible, captivating expression that Napa fans can indulge in without hesitation. "It's medium to full-bodied, round, supple, and balanced, with some classic Napa richness and depth," notes Jeb Dunnuck.Turnbull's Estate Cab has been one of the most consistent values in Napa for years, and the excellent 2023 vintage produced another "positively stellar" show-stopper to the tune of 93 points from Dunnuck. Wine Advocate's Joe Czerwinski also calls it "a super value and the rare modern-day Napa Cab under $100 that shows potential for further aging."

Of course, Napa's household names also showcase extreme value in 2023. The 94-point 2023 Frank Family Napa Valley Cab is a proven, pedigreed example of classic Napa style and a cool, "old-school" growing season, the likes of which produced many of Napa's legendary wines during the Valley's golden age. The 2023 is "a refined and complete example of Napa cabernet sauvignon showing all the poise and freshness of the cool vintage," as noted by James Suckling. Clos du Val's 2023 is "bright, aromatic, and punchy ... seriously beautiful from start to finish," while the "smooth and textural," 93-point 2023 Silverado appellation bottling offers all the features that have made this estate a fan-favorite for decades.

We'll say it time and time again – finding any Napa red with a rock-solid score and premium pedigree under $40 is a search for a needle and a haystack, but with this line-up of proven overachievers, we've got five needles in hand for savvy Napa fans to stock up on.

93D 92JS 91WA 91V

The appellation blend from this notable estate, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley checks in as 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc. Deep purple-hued, it offers beautifully pure aromatics of crème de cassis, graphite, crushed stone and violets. I love its overall purity, it's medium to full-bodied, has a layered, fresh, focused mouthfeel, and enough tannins to keep it drinking nicely for 10-15 years if well stored. Drink 2025-2038.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2025)

Blackberries, cassis, cedar and tobacco on the nose. The palate is full-bodied with fine tannins and balanced acidity, giving notes of dark plums, black currants and spices. Textural and fresh. Drink or hold.

92 points, James Suckling (Sep 2025)

Turnbull's blended 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is a super value and the rare modern-day Napa Cab under $100 that shows potential for further aging. A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, it offers gently leafy notes, plus cedar, cherries and vanilla. Full-bodied, it's firm and reasonably tannic, with ample structure and a long finish.

91+ points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Oct 2025)

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is positively stellar. Plump, juicy and inviting, the Napa Valley Cabernet is a total delight. Succulent red cherry, plum, cinnamon, new leather and mocha are front and center. Best of all, Turnbull's Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a stellar value and a crowd-pleaser, too.

2018 Chateau Lafite Rothschild (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Representing the upper echelon in the Bordeaux hierarchy, these top scoring vintages from two iconic First Growth estates are guaranteed not to disappoint, whether it's the "complexity, finesse and longevity" of Chateau Lafite Rothschild according to Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson or the signature "explosive depth" and "breathtaking purity of flavor" of Chateau Haut-Brion according to Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, another terrific opportunity to fill in the cellar with 100 pt. gems or treat yourself to the one of a kind pleasures that only First Growth Bordeaux can deliver in every vintage at best on the market pricing.

Spanning 112 hectares as the largest holding among the First Growths, the vineyards of Chateau Lafite Rothschild are located on rolling slopes of gravel up to ten meters deep in Pauillac, planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with less than half of the total production making the final cut and aged for 18-20 months in new French oak barrels made at the estate's onsite cooperage.Exhibiting Lafite's "undeniable class and charm" according to Jeb Dunnuck, these top scoring selections range from the refined 100 pt. 2015 Chateau Lafite Rothschild that's just entering its realm of approachability, described by Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson as "a truly classic Lafite" that's "understated and lyrical" to the magnificent triple 100 pt. 2020 Chateau Lafite Rothschild promising to "hit its 100th birthday in fine form" according to Jeb Dunnuck, every vintage revealing intensely aromatic, concentrated dark fruit with textbook graphite notes and layered silky tannins promising decades of longevity. Set among the contemporary suburbs of the city of Bordeaux, Chateau Haut-Brion's vineyards for the red Grand Vin span 50 hectares in Pessac-Leognan, planted almost evenly with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with small parcels of Cab Franc and Petit Verdot in a complex terroir ranging from limestone to sand to 18-meter-deep gravels interspersed with deep clay, the Grand Vin aged in mostly new French oak barrels for 22 months. With every vintage boasting its legendary ability to age, these thrilling selections range from the plush 100 pt. 2009 Chateau Haut-Brion offering the estate's signature ripe, opulent fruit elegantly balancing massive tannins to the 100 pt. 2020 Chateau Haut-Brion declared "a legend in the making" by Jeb Dunnuck and "ready to shine as the centerpiece of your collection for the next 40+ years" according to Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson.

A treasure trove of exceptional First Growths that will make it hard to choose, these top scoring blends from Chateau Lafite Rothschild and Chateau Haut-Brion range fromsome with over a decade of cellaring to more recent vintages requiring patient cellaring, all promising a thrilling evolution for decades to come and delivered in perfect provenance at best on the market pricing.

100WA 100WE 100WI 99JS 98JD 98V 98JA 98D

The 2018 Lafite Rothschild is blended of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot and 0.5% Petit Verdot and has 13.3% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, it needs a fair bit of swirling to unlock intoxicating scents of blackcurrant cordial, baked plums and black cherry compote with an undercurrent of dark chocolate, licorice, cast-iron pan, cedar chest and fertile loam, plus a waft of pencil lead. The delicately crafted, medium-bodied palate is dripping with class, featuring layers of mineral-laced black fruits and exquisitely ripe, singularly Lafite tannins, finishing with epic length and depth. This simply stunning, delicately crafted expression of 2018 with its singularly evocative imprint of Lafite will require a good 7-8 years in bottle, then should continue to inspire awe over the following 40+ years.

100 points, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

An immensely structured wine, this is complex, concentrated and yet so contained. The wine impresses with its balance, layers of succulent black-currant fruits and effortless style. A wine for the long term, it should not be touched before 2029.

100 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2021)

The 2018 Lafite Rothschild is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a little swirling to unlock notes of baked plums, boysenberry preserves, and crème de cassis, with touches of menthol, Indian spices and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-filling, spicy black fruits with velvety tannins and a long, energetic finish.

Wow. The aromas are so intense and refined at the same time, offering gorgeous blackcurrant, lead-pencil and orchid character. Such purity of fruit. Sleek and finely polished with a fine cut to the tannins that provide such grace and glamor. Yet, it’s got the power and structure to age for decades. On and on. Try after 2029.

99 points, James Suckling (Jan 2021)

Checking in as a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot, the 2018 Château Lafite-Rothschild is one of those magical Lafites that offers an already up-front, complex, nuanced style yet has the class and balance to evolve for 40-50 years. As always, this wine is never about sheer power, and the 2018 offers a full-bodied, incredibly elegant and weightless style that carries textbook blackcurrant fruits, lead pencil shavings, green tobacco, cedarwood, and camphor aromas and flavors. I compared this wine to a more elegant version of the 2016 from barrel and I think that comparison still holds. Incredibly up-front and charming, and already drinkable with sweet tannins, it will unquestionably pick up more complexity and nuance over the coming 4-6 years. It should hit maturity around age 10 and evolve for 75 years or more given its perfect balance. This is a beautiful, quintessential Lafite that exudes elegance and charm.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Lafite-Rothschild is a stunning wine. Silky and floral, the 2018 offers all the signatures of the Grand Vin, but amplified by the radiance of the year. In the glass, Lafite is rich and exotic, yet it also retains tremendous vibrancy. The interplay of Merlot picked early and Cabernet Sauvignon harvested late makes for wine of extraordinary dimension, complexity and class. Graphite, dark red fruit, spice and leather linger on the huge finish. Magnificent!

98 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

Silky and powerful, carefully delineated cassis and blueberry fruits, along with slate and liqourice. The tannins are in evidence but already showing a creaminess that cradles the fruit through the mid palate. I said this during En Primeur and during the first round of in bottle tastings, but this wine is remarkable for remaining so balanced and steady in a vintage that saw many neighbouring estates affected by the dry summer. Here instead you get floral aromatics with hints of raspberry leaf and honeysuckle, along with the classic graphite smoke. Muscular with coiled power, undoubtedly it will close down over the next five years, and then need a good decade to open back up. 3.75pH. 40hl/ha yield. 40% of the production went into the grand vin. Tannin index 74IPT. Retasted at an estate vertical July 2021.

98 points, Jane Anson (Oct 2021)

Perfumed on the nose with menthol, blackcurrant, liquorice, and creamy prunes, it is juicy and mellow on the palate, with chocolatey tannins. The relatively high alcohol (13.5%) reflects a hot and dry summer. Gentle yet powerful, the wine showcases an incredible concentration of black fruits, cedarwood, and roasted black coffee, leading into cassis. There is a soft grip towards the finish; it is ripe yet effortlessly elegant, like a fist hidden inside a velvet glove. The pure dark fruits linger endlessly. Tasted from magnum.

2019 Belle-Vue (750ml)
Merlot from Haut-Medoc, Bordeaux, France

"Extremely sleek, elegant and well made."

Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux (93 pt. Decanter review)

From a top Haut-Medoc chateau classified as Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, the impressive 93 pt. 2019 Belle-Vue offers rich aromatic spiced fruit with velvety ripe tannins, a beautifully balanced and age worthy Left Bank blend promising "to be a gem of a wine" according to Jeb Dunnuck and bargain priced for everyday enjoyment.

Located along the D2 just west of Macau, Chateau Belle-Vue is visible from the roadside just south of the massive iron gates of Margaux's Chateau Giscours and barely two kilometers from the Gironde. Releasing its first vintage in 1996, Chateau Belle-Vue is a relatively young estate situated near one of Bordeaux's original drainage canals that separates it from Giscours, sharing a similar name but not to be confused with St. Emilion's Chateau Bellevue. Planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon, the 15-hectare vineyard has deep rough gravelly soil considered the region's best terroir near the Garonne tributary and bordered by woodland to the east, the vines averaging around 39 years of age with some planted nearly a century ago. Boasting an unusually high percentage of Petit Verdot that adds a distinctly aromatically spiced component to the Grand Vin, the deeply structured 2019 Belle-Vue was aged for 14 months in 30% new French oak to reveal fresh, earthy fruit balanced by savory acidity, yielding "a gorgeous bottle of wine that will keep for over a decade" according to Jeb Dunnuck.

Describing it as "powerful and burly," Antonio Galloni of Vinous calls the 93 pt. 2019 Belle-Vue "an ideal wine for the dinner table" its appealing spiced flavors and fresh dense tannins promising a decade of drinking pleasure at a superb value.

Deep purple colour, medium to full intensity, and a feeling of confident tannic hold from the off. Such an impressive run of vintages at this Haut-Médoc property that has just been named Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel. The spice that Petit Verdot adds is clear, alongside well-brushed tannins, striking aromatics of brambly fruits. Not as luxuriously textured as in 2018 but in its place is a more serious outlook, and this is extremely sleek, elegant and well made.

93 points, Decanter (Jan 2022)

Rock star stuff readers should snatch up, the deep ruby/purple-hued 2019 Château Belle-Vue gives up a gorgeous bouquet of ripe currants, black cherries, tobacco, and cedar pencil. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, round, supple, elegant Haut-Médoc with velvety tannins, remarkable balance, and a great finish. It's a gorgeous bottle of wine that will keep for over a decade.

92 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

This fresher style of wine offers layers of black-currant acidity. They go with the ageworthy tannins to promise richness as the wine matures. Drink from 2025.

92 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Jul 2022)

The 2019 Belle-Vue has come together nicely. Powerful and earthy in the glass, the 2019 Belle-Vue is loaded with character. Tobacco, dried flowers, mint and dried flowers lend quite a bit of aromatic complexity. This super-expressive Haut-Médoc has quite a bit to offer.

91 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Aromas of mulberries, dark cherries, wet earth, soya and smoke. Medium-to full-bodied with firm tannins. Structured, with a fleshy texture and a fruity finish. 54% merlot, 26% cabernet sauvignon, 18% petit verdot. 1% cabernet franc and 1% carmenere. Drink from 2023.

91 points, James Suckling (Sep 2022)

The 2019 Belle-Vue is made of 54% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Carmenere. Deep garnet-purple in color, it has quite an earthy / savory nose of tar, truffles, and damp soil over a core of baked plums and boysenberries with a touch of dried herbs. Medium-bodied, soft, and well-crafted, it has bags of savory flavors and a fragrant, understated finish. This is a wine for those who prefer savory to fruity!

2019 Michel Arnould & Fils Heuristique Grand Cru Extra Brut Millesime (750ml)
Sparkling from Champagne, France

The Côte des Blancs seems to get the majority of attention in Champagne's Grand Cru sphere, but you're short-changing yourself in a big way if you're not famiiiar with Verzenay, a Pinot Noir-centric village in the northeast side of the Montagne de Reims. And in Verzenay, one of the undisputed names to know is Michel Arnould. Now run by Michel's son Patrick, his son-in-law Thierry, and grandson Thomas, this is a true family operation that does everything with an eye to the future, in an innovative style that stays pure and true to their Verzenay roots. Their deep range is full of must-try gems, but the 2019 Heuristique was the standout hit during our visit in April.

"What a fine introduction to this marvelous, hidden-gem domaine!"

- Andrew Kitz, B-21 Champagne Buyer

A 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it shows the wide-ranging skill-set and top-notch vineyard pedigree that goes into these wines. It's "an enchanting combination of vivid freshness and depth" as Andrew describes it, the Chardonnay providing almost endlessly bright, charming aromatics and flavors and the Pinot Noir offering luxurious weight and a robust foundation. Despite the challenges of the growing season, the quality in the end was undoubtedly high, especially for Chardonnay, and you can see that clearly in the Heurisitique's superb interplay of "concentrated vinosity" and lasting energy. In a market where vintage grower Champagnes, especially from Grand Cru terroir, are shooting upward in price, to find one under $50 is an absolute steal.

93AK

Even though the Verzenay Grand Cru village is prime Pinot Noir country, our new direct-import domaine Michel Arnould also has a Midas touch with Chardonnay, and it comes through in spades in the 2019 Heuristique. This 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is very much driven by the latter, with an enchanting combination of vivid freshness and depth. The nose leads with ripe red apple and Anjou pear, racy chalky minerality, and perfumed acacia blossom. With a little air, deeper notes of white peach and soft, toasty sur lie emerge. The palate likewise shows the energy of Chardonnay in this excellent vintage, with its gorgeous tension, as flavors of lemon confit and pear vie for position with riper notes of an almost tropical character. The weight of the Pinot Noir shows up on the mid-palate as a concentrated vinosity that introduces a lifted, drawn-out finish of white floral high tones and chalky undercurrent. It’s certainly very compelling now, but the purity and pedigree of the vintage will undoubtedly reveal much more personality in the years to come. What a fine introduction to this marvelous, hidden-gem domaine!

2022 Roucas Toumba Vacqueyras Les Restanques de Cabassole (750ml)
Grenache from Vacqueyras, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

We've been searching high and low for a top-notch Vacqueyras domaine to add to our direct-import stable, and last October we got more than we bargained for from Eric Boutelin's Roucas Toumba estate. The domaine is not nearly as well-known as it should be, given that he has some of the Vacqueyras appellation's most pristine, old-vine parcels and employs incredibly meticulous winemaking practices to give his vines their absolute best expression, resulting in what Wine Advocate's Yohan Castaing calls "some of the appellation’s most authentic and terroir-driven wines." After tasting through the latest releases, we couldn't agree more.

"The 2022 Vacqueyras les Restanques de Cabassole is a superb showing from this estate ... This is a serious Vacqueyras with depth, drive and aging potential." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

The entire range is top-tier, and the 2022 Restanques de Cabassole is a true revelation of the absolute heights that Vacqueyras can reach and an absolutely showstopping effort that puts the appellation on another level altogether, notching 94+ points from Wine Advocate. B-21 Rhône Buyer Andrew Kitz calls it "a thoroughly complete expression of true Southern Rhône character, classic in every way."

"The purity and precision here are impressive, and the long, focused finish underscores its potential. This is a superb Vacqueyras..." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

The 93-point 2023 La Grande Terre, another old-vine Grenache-based gem that's done entirely in concrete, which gives the wine absolutely stunning purity of fruit with "supple and enveloping" textural precision. Where the Restanques certainly needs time in the cellar to show all its cards, the Grande Terre is a thrilling preview that is accessible now, with the substance and craftsmanship to develop its own mesmerizing nuances over time, as well.

Vacqueyras has long lived in the shadow of Gigondas, but with efforts like these from Eric Boutelin, we're extremely excited to showcase the rising tide of quality in this excellent but overlooked appellation. There's no question that Boutelin's star is rising, and we're thrilled to add him to our direct-import portfolio, with two of the sharpest Rhône buys we've seen all year.

94WA 94AK

The 2022 Vacqueyras les Restanques de Cabassole is a superb showing from this estate, delivering a powerful yet refined expression of Vacqueyras. A blend of 60% Grenache Noir, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre grown on marl, clay and calcareous sand soils, it offers up a deeply aromatic bouquet of crushed violets, wild spices, Timut pepper and ripe black fruits. Full-bodied and layered, it’s built around a dense, fleshy core of fruit, framed by velvety tannins and energized by a bright spine of acidity. Despite its concentration, the wine never feels heavy, concluding with a saline, ethereal finish that speaks to its underlying finesse. This is a serious Vacqueyras with depth, drive and aging potential.

94+ points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Oct 2025)

Eyebrows raised all around when we tasted Eric Boutelin’s 2022 Restanques Vacqueyras. Cutting right to the chase, it’s a thoroughly complete expression of true Southern Rhône character, classic in every way. Reticent notes of hot stones, fine dried herbs, and deep, dark fruit line the bouquet, very captivating yet restrained, tinged by hot asphalt, peppery spices, and dried violets. The palate is a picture of precision, its exceptional weight carried by wonderfully balanced, assertive yet finessed tannins and pinpoint acidity. The flavors take some coaxing, but that same depth from the nose is there in spades. Brooding dark fruits, earthy soil tones, iron, wild game, and fine floral accents come in well-defined succession to a lasting finish. It’s obvious this wine has some serious evolution in store. It’s absolutely enjoyable now for its undeniably classic personality, but it will become truly exceptional after several years in the cellar, especially considering the price.

Soft and supple aromas of black currants, dark chocolate, black olives, potpourri and graphite. The palate is smooth and textural, with firmly framed tannins, bright acidity and a long finish. 2021 Cordero di Montezemolo Barolo Monfalletto (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

"Alberto Cordero di Montezemolo's 2021 Barolos are terrific ... I found the wines super-impressive." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

In a region like Piedmont, where nearly every estate has deep historical roots, Cordero Montezemolo still stands out, with 19 generations of the same family tending this prized property on La Morra's Monfalletto hill. To get sense of how special the property is, you only need to experience the 95-point 2021 Monfalletto Barolo and its utterly transparent, pure terroir personality. "A beautiful, highly pleasing Barolo," it's a unbelievable value, especially in the modern classic 2021 vintage.

While the estate is nearly contiguous around La Morra, it boasts one particular anomaly – a pristine parcel in Castiglione Falletto's Villero cru. The 97-point 2021 Enrico VI is emblematic of the Villero cru's iron-rich soils, limestone substrate, and southwest exposure, and the resulting wine "transmits a sense of electricity and tension that is always unique to this site," according to Wine Advocate's Monica Larner. Interestingly, the estate gives its single-cru wines shorter elevage than the village-level Monfalletto, so the site transparency is amplified even more, a certain advantage in an incredible vintage like 2021. "A deep, statuesque Barolo with tons of Villero personality ... This is impressive," notes Galloni, for its "notable presence and structure."

For ultra-classic, singular Barolo terroir, avid collectors and fans can't do much better than this stunning pair at market-best pricing.

95JS 93WA 93V 93WS 93WE

An intense, deep, vibrant wine full of spicy aromas of mint, licorice, balsamic, eucalyptus, dried violets and prunes. The attack is supple and dense, with a full body, refreshing acidity and firm tannins that are velvety and refined. Still austere in the finish, with the potential for aging. Try from 2027.

95 points, Aldo Fiordelli, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

The Cordero di Montezemolo 2021 Barolo Monfalletto comes from various vineyards near the winery in La Morra. This wine offers a plump, slightly ripe fruit profile with black cherry, damson plum and menthol. This remains genuine and pretty all the while. It doesn't show the exacting depth of the top wines, but this well-priced Barolo delivers good cheer over a more accessible style. This is a release of 54,000 bottles.

93 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jun 2025)

The 2021 Barolo Monfalletto is gorgeous. Deep, pliant and expressive, the 2021 has a lot to offer. I would give this a few years in the cellar, as it is quite concentrated and deep. Black cherry, leather, spice, incense and licorice build nicely, leading to a rich, sumptuous finish. The Monfalletto is a beautiful, highly pleasing Barolo. All it needs is a bit of time to shed some of its considerable baby fat.

93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2025)

This is supple and spicy, its cherry, raspberry and rose flavors framed by a light touch of oak. Balanced and elegant, with refined tannins. Fine length. Best from 2028 through 2043. 4,600 cases made, 2,100 cases imported.

93 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Dec 2025)

Dark cherries and ripe forest fruits emerge with brooding intensity, showing Monfalletto's robust personality. The wine flexes its muscles across the palate, where dusty tannins build steadily before exploding on the finish, demonstrating a powerful yet controlled expression of Barolo's classic structure. The 2016 Haut-Brion is blended of 56% Merlot, 37.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6.5% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the nose is at once profound and arresting, offering drop-dead gorgeous Morello cherries, lilacs and red rose scents with a core of Black Forest cake, warm blackcurrants and blueberry preserves plus wafts of sandalwood and underbrush. Medium-bodied, the elegantly crafted palate is completely packed with intense floral, mineral and cassis-laced flavors with a firm frame of very finely pixelated tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and achingly stunning.

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Nov 2018)

The 2016 Haut-Brion is quite possibly even more magnificent from bottle than it was from barrel. Powerful and rich, yet not at all heavy, the 2016 is a wine of nearly indescribable beauty. Haut-Brion is often a thrilling wine, but it is rarely this finessed in its youth. Gravel, cure meat, tobacco and cedar are some of the many nuances that develop with air, but it is an extraordinary sense of harmony that really stands out. What a wine!

100 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2019)

Immensely tannic, this is a great Haut-Brion, one of the finest for many years. It shows the severe side of this estate, with a dense structure to match the powerful black fruits. Rich with berry flavors and lifted by enough acidity, the wine will age for many years. Drink from 2026.

100 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2019)

Stunning black fruit with plenty of forest berries in there, the whole picture cool and very delicate, also on the concentrated and highly structured palate. The tannins are very fine-grained, but decisively austere and, together with the vibrant acidity, they propel the finish out towards infinity and leave a breathtaking final impression. A blend of 56 per cent merlot, 37.5 per cent cabernet sauvignon and 6.5 per cent cabernet franc. Very long aging potential, but you could try it in 2023.

100 points, James Suckling (Dec 2019)

As to the reds, the 2016 Haut Brion is a prodigious, legendary wine in the making, although it’s not for those seeking instant gratification. Deeper colored and more concentrated than the La Mission Haut Brion, it reveals a purple/ruby color as well as a sensational bouquet of blackcurrants, cassis, cigar tobacco, cold fireplace, violets, and lead pencil. Deep, masculine, structured, and mineral-laced, it has a stacked mid-palate, full-bodied richness, building tannins, and a firm, blockbuster styled finish that lasts for close to a minute. A wine for the ages, don’t even think about opening bottles for at least 7-8 years. It should keep for half a century. The blend in 2016 is 56% Merlot, 37.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6.5% Cabernet Franc.

98+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2019)

Large and in charge, this has a prodigious core of steeped plum, black currant and loganberry fruit flavors that show both compote and coulis aspects. While that steeps, this delivers a sturdy frame of roasted mesquite, smoldering tobacco and incense, surrounding a muscular spine of worn cedar and tar. Still rather backward, this will be showing well when most others from the vintage have had their day. Best from 2025 through 2045. 11,600 cases made.

One of the greatest wines produced in Bordeaux this year is the 2019 Lafite Rothschild, an impeccably balanced classic of immense charm and grace. Wafting from the glass with arresting aromas of cassis, blackberries and cherries mingled with violets, cigar box and warm spices, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, its velvety attack segueing into a layered, concentrated mid-palate framed by exquisitely powdery tannins and ripe acids, and concluding with a long, perfumed finish. This rivals the 2010 and 2016 as the greatest Lafite of the decade, and of those three vintages, it's clearly the most sensual and demonstrative out of the gates. The blend contains fully 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and attained a modest 13.4% alcohol.

100 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

So much sweet tobacco, Spanish cedar, dried flowers, dark mushrooms and roses. Really aromatic. This is so polished and very powerful, yet ethereal and refined at the same time. The finish goes on for minutes. Tight and harmonious. You want to drink it! So balanced, yet it will age beautifully. It will be this good forever. 94% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Better after 2031.

100 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Lafite-Rothschild is a mesmerizing wine that shows how compelling the vintage is on the Left Bank. Elegant, creamy and exquisitely layered, the 2019 Lafite conquers all the senses. There is tremendous density and power that belies the 12.8% alcohol, but then again, that can be the magic of Bordeaux. Classic Lafite red plum fruit, spice, cedar, licorice and rose petal linger on the striking, persistent finish.

98 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

A very energetic wine, with wild loganberry, mulberry and black currant fruit flavors that bristle with mouthwatering bay leaf, licorice root and savory notes. The finish is tight now, with charcoal shadings and a smoldering cast iron note, but there's additional black tea, incense and floral hints for contrast. Dense and driven, with more than enough elements to match its energy, meaning this can cruise in the cellar for a long time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2026 through 2045.

2023 Hirtzberger Riesling Ried Steinporz Smaragd (750ml)
Riesling from Wachau, Niederosterreich, Austria
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

The Hirtzberger estate is in many ways the definitive Wachau standard bearer. After all, it was the original Franz Hirtzberger who founded the Vinea Wachau classification which now sets the standards for the region's three-tier hierarchy of Steinfeder, Federspiel, and Smaragd. Franz the second has now served as president of the organization for going on three decades, so the family practically is Wachau in a way. And that's before we even get to their unparalleled stable of vineyard sites, all of which are simply some of the best in all of Austria.

The 2024 vintage was not without its challenges, but the ever-meticulous Hirtzberger made another set of truly outstanding wines, highlighted by a double 100-point expression of the legendary Riesling Ried Singerriedl, which "shows perfect harmony" in its "incredibly vivid and bold" personality. The 2024 Gruner Veltliner Honivogl is itself another sterling rendition flirting with perfection in its "powerful, elegant, silky texture, fine fruit sweetness, [and] finesse-rich structure." Finally, don't miss the 98-point Riesling Ried Steinporz from a sheltered site set off the Danube, which produces a wine of "direction, freshness, and structure" with "lots of energy." Of course, these are just the highlights, but every wine in the roster below is a top performer in the category.

We're seriously impressed so far with what we've seen in Austria's 2024 vintage, and Hirtzberger's offerings stand unequivocally among the very elite of the campaign. However, quantities are limited, so collectors will want to take decisive action to secure these gems at the best pricing in the market.

98FS 97V 97JS

Light greenish yellow, silver reflections. Fresh vineyard peach, nuances of dark minerality, a hint of lime and white flowers. Taut, tightly woven, bright fruit, cool style, fine acidity, citrus-salty finish, very good length, light-footed and dancing, a fine food companion.

96-98 points, Peter Moser, Falstaff (Jun 2024)

The 2023 Riesling Steinporz Smaragd, also on paragneiss, is set back from the Danube and slightly warmer than the Setzberg, protected by the 1000-Eimerberg. The vines are between 30 and 40 years old. Even with a touch of apricot kernel on the nose, Golden apricot announces ripeness. The palate is brighter and tighter than the nose suggests, with ripe lemon rippling through juicy, ripe apricot flesh. This is juiciness; this is picture-book Wachau, ripe but so contoured, chiseled and elegant, bedded not on yeast but on pure rock. Zestiness and stone are the finish. This is a triumph. Wow. (Bone-dry)

97 points, Anne Krebiehl, Vinous (Jul 2024)

Very expressive peach and white flower aromas are married to an appealing richness and a very elegant mineral acidity on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Terrific tension drives the very long, intensely stony finish, which has fantastic citrusy complexity (even blood oranges). So bright, but the acidity is relatively moderate in the riesling context. Drink or hold.

The 2009 Haut-Brion is deep garnet colored and slightly closed and shy to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal sensuous notions of warm blackberries, plum preserves, mulberries and blackcurrant cordial with touches of star anise, mocha and damp soil. Full-bodied, taut and tightly wound in the mouth, the palate delivers mouth-coating black fruit and mineral layers with a very firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins, finishing long and earthy. This needs time!

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2019)

Extravagant and exotic, but still lively, this is a super-concentrated and elegant wine that's already breathtaking, yet has enormous aging potential. Plenty of wet earth and mushroom character alongside the cassis and blackberry aromas. Super-long, perfectly balanced finish. Drink or hold. (Horizontal Tasting, London, 2019)

100 points, James Suckling (Oct 2019)

This enormous young wine is among the most backward of the vintage at this early stage, with iron-clad grip holding the broad, deep core of blackberry, cassis and roasted fig notes in check for now. The finish is a torrent of dense, almost compressed layers of tobacco leaf, hot paving stone, singed bay leaf and tar that will take at least a decade to massage together fully. This one is for the kids born in 2009. Best from 2020 through 2040. 10,500 cases made.

I finished my trip through Bordeaux with the 2020 Château Haut-Brion, and it was certainly a fitting cap to the trip. Revealing a deep ruby/plum hue, the 2020 exhibits extraordinary aromatics of ripe black fruits, scorched earth, cold fireplace, and acacia flowers. An absolute blockbuster on the palate, this structured, full-bodied, massively concentrated Pessac builds incrementally, with ultra-fine tannins, a deep, layered mid-palate, and a great, great finish. Richer and more concentrated than both the 2018 and 2019 (there are some similarities to 2010), this is a legend in the making. The blend is 42.8% Merlot, 39.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Cabernet Franc, all of which will spend 15-18 months in 77% new French oak. Hide bottles for a decade, and it should evolve for 50-75 years.

100 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

This is a superb Haut-Brion with incredible tannins that are wonderfully fine-grained. It’s really powerful. This is very primary with so much grape-generated tannin structure. Very, very long, going on for minutes. Seductive and friendly at the start and then takes you on at the finish with so much structure. Wine of the vintage?

100 points, James Suckling (Jun 2021)

The 2020 Haut Brion is a blend of 42.8% Merlot, 39.7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17.5% Cabernet Franc, with a pH of 3.78. Deep garnet-purple in color, it opens with profound blackcurrant cordial, baked plums, and boysenberry preserves notes, leading to an undercurrent of graphite, iron ore, black truffles, and wood smoke, plus a hint of cardamom. The full-bodied palate is tightly knit with black fruit and mineral layers, supported by a rock-solid backbone of grainy tannins and seamless acidity, finishing long and savory.

99 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Haut-Brion is more aromatically demonstrative than La Mission Haut-Brion, bursting with aromas of blackberries and raspberries mingled with licorice, cigar wrapper, pencil shavings and nicely integrated new oak. Full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's rich and layered, with an enveloping core of fruit that's girdled by plenty of sweet, powdery tannin. Despite checking in at a similarly lofty alcoholic degree to the 2019, its more granular tannic profile tempers the vintage's sweetness of fruit and lends the wine a more classically proportioned, and more classically structured, profile.

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Lafite Rothschild is a little mute on the nose at this stage, opening to reveal warm blackcurrants, baked plums and boysenberry scents with hints of chocolate mint, violets, cedar chest and pencil lead. Full-bodied, rich and densely packed with perfumed black fruit layers, it has a rock-solid backbone of fantastically ripe, grainy tannins and beautiful freshness, finishing very long and minerally. Still very youthful!

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2020)

Almost black in color, this stunning wine is gorgeous, rich and dense. It's grand and powerful, with a strong sense of its own importance. The beautiful tannins and the fragrant black currant fruits are palpable. It's a great wine, with huge potential.

100 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2013)

This vintage featured a cold winter and cool weather at flowering, followed by a dry summer with a hot July and warm days and cool nights in August and September. The season delivered a wine with an inky dark colour and bright aromas of blackcurrant and spice with a distinctive floral edge. The texture is lively and crisp, with plenty of freshness, firm tannins, and impressive length. This wine will be best after another 10 years in bottle and will easily last 50 years beyond that. This superb, vibrant wine is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot with no Cabernet Franc or Petit Verdot in the grand vin.

This is shy and not giving its all at the moment. Yet it is full and intense with a tightly intertwined tannic and fruit structure. Ethereal blackberry, currant, cedar, and nutty flavors. 2021 Monte Branco Trincadeira (750ml)

Portuguese wine is so much more than port or even the dry wines of Douro. The country is nearly covered by designated wine regions, and two of the most dynamic and promising for adventurous wine lovers are the centrally located Bairrada and the southern region of Alentejo.

Alentejo is still relatively unknown in wider wine circles, but the region's benchmark producers, such as Susana Esteban and Luis Louro's Monte Branco, are upping their game in a big way, producing some truly noteworthy wines that are among the more intriguing discoveries in the Old World, and they're now getting serious recognition in the U.S. press from the like of Wine Advocate.

Bairrada's relatively gently rolling terrain and coastal climate make it an ideal habitat for the native Baga varietal, the wines of which are notoriously structured and long-lived. The visionary pioneer that has come to define the Bairrada region, Luis Pato has been an avant garde genius pushing the envelope for nearly five decades now, and this latest set of releases shows that he's not content to rest on his laurels, even as his career can by considered an unqualified success many times over.

The Vinhas Velhas Tinto and Branco are two of the most age-worthy wines in their price tier, each with sterling press from Wine Advocate. Of the former, Luis Gutierrez writes, "It's really fine-boned and elegant, with superb balance, depth and complexity ... This is one to buy by the case and enjoy over the next decade... or two!" The WA93+ Branco is likewise a firm, mineral-driven specimen that is all about long-term development. Unique to almost any winery, you can also find perfect-provenance library gems like the 93-point 2009 Vinha Barrio or the 1990 Vinhas Velhas Branco. That's right, it's a current release direct from the winery's cellar. In a recent 95-point review,Wine Advocate's Luis Gutierrez noted, "This is a monumental white close to 35 years of age! And it should still continue for a few more years." Needless to say, you're in for an experience like no other with this one.

When exploring unfamiliar regions like these, it's often a daunting task to decipher which wines are worth the pursuit, so we've done the hard work and curated this list of proven winners to get you off on the right foot in your journey of discovery through Portugal's hidden treasures.

I tasted two vintages of the varietal Trincadeira from two plots that were planted in 2001, one on schist and the other on limestone, the oldest of which was the 2021 Trincadeira. It was cropped from a cooler year with less ripeness and more freshness. Like the 2022 I tasted next to it, this fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in neutral 300-liter barrels for one year. It has the varietal profile—perfumed, earthy, slightly rustic—and it is fresher, with finer tannins and more contained ripeness. 3,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023.

100JD 100WE 100JS 99D 98V 98WI

Looking at the Grand Vin, the 2020 Château Lafite-Rothschild is a sensational effort checking in as 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot that hit 12.8% natural alcohol and a pH of 3.94. As Lafite as Lafite gets, this ultra-classic reveals a dense ruby/plum hue as well as a tight, yet layered bouquet of ripe blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, freshly sharpened pencils, graphite, and subtle spice. Flawlessly balanced, deep, concentrated, and layered, it has an incredible mid-palate, building, perfect tannins, and a finish that leaves you salivating. Refined, elegant, and perfection are the buzz words here. Unfortunately, it's not for the instant gratification crowd, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this require 15 years to hit the early stages of its prime drinking window. It will probably hit its 100th birthday in fine form.

100 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

Structured, dense and with great concentration, this wine is magnificent. Its black fruits and density indicate the power of the wine and its longevity. At the same time, the wine has the elegance that is always associated with this estate. Drink from 2028.

100 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Apr 2023)

Amazing aromas here with tobacco, crushed stone, cigar box, currants, tar, and lead pencil, as well as spices, iron, and dried ginger. Medium- to full-bodied, with a density and tightness. Very compact and complex. Racy. Delicacy with strength. Orange peel undertones. A wine to contemplate. You must understand it to understand the great Lafites of the past and those of the future. Only 12.8% alcohol. 92% cabernet sauvignon, 7% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Best after 2030, but drink it if you have the chance taste it.

100 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

An utterly brilliant Lafite - a sense of understated charm, it’s certainly not shouting but delivers a bright, sharp, joyous sensation. Almost subtle in its presentation with delicacy and refinement on show yet such clear power underneath. An incredible aromatic display with ripe black fruits, pepper, liquorice and crushed stones - calm, controlled and contained with beautiful tannin integration and a chalky, salinity on the finish. Supremely complete with mass appeal.

99 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jan 2023)

The 2020 Lafite-Rothschild, which contains the highest proportion of Merlot since the 2016, hit the bull's eye from barrel. Revisiting the wine in the bottle since July, it still bursts from the glass with copious blackberries, touches of blueberry and juniper, pencil lead and a hint of crushed stone. Wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiseled tannins, quite linear and "correct" - a quintessential Lafite-Rothschild in many ways. It gently builds in the mouth while keeping a restraint on things, finishing with fine sapidity yet a little more juiciness than you would have found a decade or two earlier. This has the potential to evolve beautifully over several decades.

98 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Lafite Rothschild is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, with a pH of 3.94. Deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly unfurls to offer very pure, intense scents of crushed blackcurrants, fresh plums, and blackberries, plus suggestions of violets, cinnamon stick, fertile loam, and tapenade with a touch of tar. The light-bodied palate is very tightly knit with many black fruit, mineral, and fragrant earth layers and a firm backbone of grainy tannins, finishing long and earthy. A bright, bright, shiny Lafite! It needs a good 12-15 years!

2023 Luis Pato Vinhas Velhas Tinto (750ml)
Baga from Bairrada, Portugal
B-21 Top Recommendation

94WA

The 2023 Vinhas Velhas Tinto, the first wine in Portugal to be called old vines back in 1988, was produced with Baga grapes from two villages, São Lourenço and Óis do Bairro, from vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age on stony clay and limestone soils. Since 2020, the wine is more aromatic and with less extraction, as they lowered the temperature of the fermentation, which occurred with indigenous yeasts and a maceration time of 10 days at 22 degrees Celsius. It has a beautiful translucent and bright ruby color and an equally bright nose that is floral and perfumed, with an ethereal side. This has always been a favorite of mine, a wine that also has a good track record for developing in bottle. It's really fine-boned and elegant, with superb balance, depth and complexity but in a subtler way. The wine matured in well-seasoned French oak barrels for two years. This is one to buy by the case and enjoy over the next decade... or two! 18,110 bottles and 100 magnums produced. It was bottled in two lots in February and July 2025.

2024 Hirtzberger Honivogl Gruner Veltliner Smaragd (750ml)
Gruner Veltliner from Wachau, Niederosterreich, Austria

Pale green yellow, silver reflections. Delicate herbal savouriness, fine white pome fruit, mineral, a hint of apple and mango, tobacco nuances, multi-faceted bouquet. Powerful, elegant, silky texture, fine fruit sweetness, finesse-rich structure, mineral-salty, completely harmonious, a hint of apricot on the finish, will benefit from bottle ageing.

Wonderfully fragrant chamomile, buttercup, candied lemon, mango and toffee apple aromas. It's caressing, full-bodied and lightly oily, with richness and freshness combined. Gorgeously ripe, long and concentrated, with fantastic textural presence. Drink or hold.

Pure perfection and one of truly legendary wines out there, the 2010 is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc that hit a whopping 14.6% natural alcohol, with a healthy pH of 3.7. This deep rich, opulent beauty is just now at the early stages of its prime drink window and has an incredible array of blackcurrants, chocolate, truffly earth, graphite, and hints of tobacco. A massive wine in every sense, it still somehow stays weightless and graceful, with silky, building tannins, flawless balance, and just everything in the right place. It needs an hour or two in a decanter if drinking any time soon, and it's going to have upwards of 75-100 years of ultimate longevity.

100 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2021)

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Haut-Brion charges out of the gate with exuberant notes of crème de cassis, blueberry pie and baked plums followed by nuances of dark chocolate, licorice and cloves. Full-bodied, the palate has lots of subtle earth and mineral accents with a firm, finely grained texture and great freshness lifting the long finish.

99 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2020)

Sappy, tongue-coating pastis, blackberry coulis and loganberry fruit starts this huge wine off, followed by a parade of licorice snap, violet, tar, black tea, roasted alder, wood spice and steeped black cherry fruit notes. A beam of pure cassis drives through this, and the finish pulls everything together with a mouthwatering brambly edge that should soften slowly over time. A riveting display of brawny power, unbridled energy and high-level terroir. Best from 2020 through 2040. 7,800 cases made.

99 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2013)

A firm and serious wine, complex and complicated, one of the finest wines from 2010 vintage. It has a rich undertow of black fruits, while the tannins dominate at this stage. To add to the powerful range of flavors, the wine has an edge of severity that bodes well for its long-term future.

2021 Cordero di Montezemolo Barolo Enrico VI (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

The Italian collectible scene is one of most dynamic and exciting categories in today's wine market. With prices on other blue-chip regions climbing into the stratosphere (looking at you Napa and Burgundy), the Boot's most acclaimed estates continue to put out absolutely stellar, world-class offerings that are priced more than reasonably given the pedigree on offer, as is plainly evident in today's trio of sub-$100 must-haves for the cellar.

The 2023 Petrolo Galatrona is another highlight-reel effort from this elite estate, with 98 points from James Suckling, as well as effusive praise from Antonio Galloni and Decanter. "The 2023 Galatrona,100% Merlot, is soft, plush and sensual ... not a huge Galatrona but is instead a wine that impresses with its finesse," writes Galloni. "Absolutely delicious" and "a gorgeous wine" are but a few of the pther accolades the 2023 has already racked up. The vintage gives us a refined and precise expression of Tuscan Merlot that is built to cruise on finesse rather than power. "One for the cellar," as James Suckling calls it.

The 2023 Mazzei Siepi is a perennially stunning expression that simultaneously captures the signature Tuscan take on Merlot as well as all the hallmarks of Tuscany's heart and soul, the beloved Sangiovese grape. The double 97-point 2023 Siepi is "classy stuff" per Decanter. "Concentrated and opulent ... delicious," notes Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson, this Sangioves-Merlot blend is a reference-point Super Tuscan collectible is every sense, with a critical track record that's one of the most impressive in its category.

The 97-point 2021 Cordero Montezemolo Enrico VI Barolo is emblematic of the Villero cru's iron-rich soils, limestone substrate, and southwest exposure, and the resulting wine "transmits a sense of electricity and tension that is always unique to this site," according to Wine Advocate's Monica Larner. "A deep, statuesque Barolo with tons of Villero personality," echoes Galloni. Interestingly, the estate gives its single-cru wines shorter elevage than the village-level Monfalletto, so the site transparency is amplified even more, a certain advantage in an incredible vintage like 2021. "Rich and ample," notes Galloni, "the 2021 is endowed with notable presence and structure." For ultra-classic, singular Barolo terroir, avid collectors and fans can't do much better than this stunning rendition.

97WA 96JS 95V 95WE

Enrico VI draws its fruit from Villero in Castiglione Faletto. The soils are rich in iron and active limestone, and the wine therefore transmits a sense of electricity and tension that is always unique to this site. The Cordero di Montezemolo 2021 Barolo Enrico VI delivers crushed stone to frame dark fruit, cherry, redcurrant and violet. This wine is quite angular, and it delivers more dimension than the Gattera or certainly the Monfalletto. You can also count on a longer aging window for the Enrico VI. This is a release of 7,200 bottles.

97 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jun 2025)

This shows tar, licorice, dark fruit and dried flowers. The palate is juicy, with firm tannins and good freshness. It’s very harmonious and solid overall. The finish is chewy and flavorful. Better from 2028.

96 points, Jacobo García Andrade, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

The 2021 Barolo Enrico VI is especially fine this year. Rich and ample, the 2021 is endowed with notable presence and structure. Black cherry, plum, licorice, leather, incense and melted road tar all build in a deep, statuesque Barolo with tons of Villero personality. Sage, lavender and a whole range of deeply-pitched balsamic notes wrap around the huge, resonant finish. This is impressive.

95 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2025)

Generous aromas of cherry preserves and baked rhubarb weave through exotic incense, freshly turned earth, and garden herbs in an enchanting display. The palate shows remarkable balance, with fine-grained yet assertive tannins supporting dark fruit character, while Nebbiolo's signature acidity provides lift and energy. This represents Enrico VI at its peak of quality, demonstrating the family's commitment. Drink from 2027

2023 Henri Gouges Nuits-St.-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots (750ml)

"Across the board, these were some of the most perfumed, delineated wines we've tasted yet this year, and the structural and textural finesse are almost unbelievable for Nuits-St-Georges." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Burgundy Buyer

Our visit to Domaine Henri Gouges earlier this year was revelatory in more ways than one. First, it showed us some of the best 2023 reds we've come across, indicating that, at the top end, this is a super-classic vintage for Burgundy purists to take special interest in. Second, it showed us that Gouges is back on top in a big way. This Nuits-St-Georges benchmark "hits hard" in 2023 according to Andrew, with a standout range that eclipses even some previously acclaimed vintages, in his opinion.

The village Nuits is always an "energetic gem that does everything it's supposed to do" in fine fashion, while the 1er crus simply shine, in our humble opinion. The 2023 Clos des Porrets St-Georges is "an indisputably classic 2023 NSG 1er cru in every way," while the Pruliers "takes this site to the level of more lauded crus like its stablemate, the Vaucrains." Speaking of which, this stellar cru produced a potential 96-pointer that Jasper Morris calls "Immediately classy on the nose from this great terroir. Not hugely open, but very fine, and this continues on the palate. A sense of refinement despite the level of energy." Finally, the Les St-Georges makes a fine case for this vineyard as the best in the appellation (perhaps deserving of grand cru status?). Burghound describes the 2023 as "super-sleek, intense and detailed, mineral-driven and muscular," showing all the pedigree of this hallowed site in a vintage that allows it to shine in every facet.

Needless to say, when we were offered our allocation, we jumped on every last bottle, so now our Burgundy collectors can stock up on some of the sharpest collectible gems of the vintage at superb, market-leading pricing.

93JM 91V

Bottled in July. A bright ruby purple. The bouquet has a fine ripeness to the fruit, less heady than Chaines Carteaux. From a bright fresh red fruit at the front of the palate to something a little richer and darker behind, along with a peppery finish. Fine length, this is accessible but should also age quite well. Drink from 2029-2034. Tasted Nov 2024.

93 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy (Jan 2025)

The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru has a lifted, perfumed nose with redcurrant, wild strawberry and light sous-bois scents. It is far superior to the Les Chênes Carteaux. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, crisp red berry fruit laced with orange rind and a touch of black pepper. Harmonious on the finish, this is a competent Les Chaignots.

An expressive vintage with the potential to age, this Cabernet from Clos du Val captures the inky dark fruits, dark chocolate, and cascade of fresh herbs so classic to the cuvee with the intensity and lengthy structure of the vintage. Concentration with verve are a highlight.

Refined and earth-driven, showing tightly wound black-fruit aromas with underlying notes of graphite, bitter chocolate and cured meats. The palate is focused and pure with finely tuned tannins and a generous yet precise palate. A lovely wine to drink now or to cellar. Drink or hold.

94JS 93WA

Fennel and subtle limes on the nose of this positively austere wine. The palate is incisive and medium- to full-bodied, showing good concentration and freshness that borders on saline. A blend of bical, cercial and sercialinho. Drink now or hold.

94 points, Jacobo García Andrade, James Suckling (Nov 2025)

The 2024 Vinhas Velhas Branco is a wine that has existed since 1990, but now it ferments and matures exclusively in stainless steel. It's a blend of Bical, Sercialinho and Cerceal that fermented with indigenous yeasts and was kept in stainless steel until bottling time. I just love the austere nose with a notable absence of fruit. It's all about crushed rocks, herbs and flowers, and it's balanced, elegant and subtle. It has 12.4% alcohol and 5.1 grams of acidity. It's fresh and light with lots of energy and light. This wine has a long track record for aging in bottle, and this vintage should do so. The price is unbeatable. 40,000 bottles, 400 magnums and 2,000 half-bottles produced. It was bottled during 2025.
