Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Reserve (750ml)
Sparkling from Champagne, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

"An enticing version ... This is long, creamy and harmonious, integrating the expressive profile with vibrant acidity and a fine, satin-like texture." - Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator

Every so often, we have to turn back to the all-time favorites, the guaranteed-to-please mainstays that have established themselves as best buys many times over, and in Champagne, that means Charles Heidsieck. This renowned, benchmark grande marque has done as much as any of Champagne's iconic houses to establish the category on the world stage and make Champagne the global phenomenon that it is.

After all, it was the house's namesake, Charles Heidsieck himself, who took Champagne to new heights of popularity in the United States, so much so that he came to be known far and wide by the moniker Champagne Charlie. Today, the house remains a reference-point brand for consistent excellence from the top of the range to the entry-level, as you'll clearly see in this latest release of the flagship Brut Réserve.

Equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with 20% Pinot Meunier rounding out the cépage, this rendition is "generous and inviting, with loads of classic charm" as noted by Jeb Dunnuck's Champagne critic Audrey Frick in her 92-point review. Several other notable critics concur – the Brut Réserve is a quintessential expression that delivers what all Champagne aficionados are looking for.

93WS 93JS 92WA 92JD 92V 92WE

An enticing version, with richly toasted brioche and roasted hazelnut on the nose transitioning to underscore flavors of ripe black cherry, crème de cassis, gingerbread, lime blossoms and crystallized honey. This is long, creamy and harmonious, integrating the expressive profile with vibrant acidity and a fine, satin-like texture. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Disgorged 2022. Drink now through 2029. 5,000 cases imported.

93 points, Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator (Nov 2024)

A creamy and silky champagne that has notes of lemons, pastries and apple compote on the nose. It’s medium-bodied and layered with fine bubbles and tasty pastry notes on the fresh, balanced finish. Drink now.

93 points, Claire Nesbitt, James Suckling (Aug 2024)

The NV Brut Réserve, a combination of more than 60 different crus and 150 wines, evokes aromas of brioche, pastry, ripe orchard fruits, beeswax and spices. Medium to full-bodied, enrobing and charming, it has a fleshy core of fruit, a pinpoint mousse and delicate acids, making it a charming, delicate Champagne. This blend consists of 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier, with 50% vins de réserve, and was disgorged with a dosage of nine grams per liter.

92 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Oct 2024)

The NV Champagne Reserve Brut, a blend of 40% each Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and 20% Meunier, pours a yellow/golden color and is generous and inviting, with loads of classic charm in its notes of brioche, ripe peaches, honied citrus, and fresh flowers. The palate is medium framed but fleshed out by a rounded mousse and has a suggestion of decadence as well as a clean finish. This highly appealing multi-vintage cuvée sees a high percentage of reserve wine going into the final blend, which adds a very well-integrated and layered feel. Drink now or over the coming 5-7 years. Disgorged 2022.

92 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2024)

The NV Brut Réserve blends 40% each of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with 20% Pinot Meunier, containing up to 50% aged reserve wines. It spent four years on lees and opens with its characteristic smoky, sultry reduction. Redcurrant and lemon follow, leading to an ultra-clear, bright, vivid palate that is limpid with Chardonnay and structured with Pinot fruit, managing to be rich and rounded without a gram of fat. Supple autolysis appears as slightly peppery rye crumb, sitting well with this reductive style. Dosage is 9 grams per liter. (Lot L230718-3167)

92 points, Anne Krebiehl, Vinous (Dec 2024)

A vibrant Champagne with a white fruit aroma offers a touch of maturity and richness that is typical of the Charles Heidsieck style. Red apples, citrus and toast give the wine a fine balance.

2022 Bedrock Zinfandel Old Vine (750ml)
Zinfandel from California
B-21 Top Recommendation

Described as "an absolute delight" by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the alluring 93 pt. 2022 Bedrock Zinfandel Old Vine reveals fresh, aromatic brambly red fruit layered with juicy acidity and integrated, firm tannins, sourced from some of California's most iconic old vine vineyards and a top value bargain-priced for Zinfandel lovers to enjoy often.

Established in 2007 by the son of Ravenswood founding winemaker Joel Peterson, Bedrock Wine Company's Morgan Twain-Peterson and long-time business partner Chris Cottrell craft their wines from a who's who list of the region's most historic vineyards, sourcing the old vine Zinfandel from centuries' old sites throughout Sonoma and Contra Costa counties including the Peterson's own Bedrock Vineyard. Described by Antonio Galloni as "among the most pedigreed vineyard sites anywhere in the world," Bedrock was the first California vineyard to be replanted in 1888 following the devastation of phylloxera, boasting a Zinfandel-dominated field mix planted in volcanic rocks and cobbly loam soil and farmed organically by the Petersons without irrigation. Blending 85% Zinfandel with 7% Carignan, 4% Cinsault and small amounts of other varieties averaging 80 years of age and fermenting with native yeasts, Morgan aged the lush 2022 Bedrock Zinfandel Old Vine in a combination of French oak and Austrian oak puncheons and foudres with about 10% new, yielding a fresh and delicately spiced Zinfandel with layered fine tannins that's ready to enjoy and will continue to mature gracefully over the next few years.

Crafted by "one of the most talented winemakers of his generation" according to Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, the impressive 93 pt. 2022 Bedrock Zinfandel Old Vine is blended from many of the iconic sites that go into Bedrock's single vineyard Zins at a fraction of their price, delivering a transparent expression of rich, old vine Zinfandel at an unbeatable value price.

93WS 92JD

Dynamic and generous, this Zin combines old-school briar with sleek suppleness, serving up stylish flavors of raspberry and cherry accented by savory pepper, cinnamon and garrigue tones that sail on the rich finish. Drink now through 2033. 5,000 cases made.

93 points, Tim Fish, Wine Spectator (May 2024)

Consistently an exceptional value and representation of the estate, the 2022 Zinfandel Old Vine is the estate's signature wine, accounting for approximately half of their production, coming from vines averaging over 80 years old. Pouring a magenta/light purple color, it exhibits notes of fresh, ripe raspberries, peppercorn, and floral perfume, maintaining lovely clarity throughout. Medium-bodied, with a fine, silky texture, it has great lift and ripe acidity. They used large barrels and demi-muids to keep tension in the wine in this warm vintage. Drink 2025-2032.

2012 Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

A Rioja lover's dream assortment, these traditionally styled selections from Lopez de Heredia come from one of the region's most esteemed Bodegas with over a century of expertise as grower-producers, their legendary, long-lived Riojas released only after lengthy aging in their famously moldy and cobweb-laced cellars, perfect for mixing a case or two at a price that "seems like a steal" according to Wine and Spirits.

As the last remaining family-run Bodegas in Rioja, winemaking at Lopez de Heredia has remained remarkably unchanged since its inception in 1877, crafting its wines in the Vina Tondonia winery in Haro with only estate-grown fruit, fermenting with natural yeasts and aging for extended periods in wood before bottling without filtration and further aging in the bottle.

Summing up the long-lived aging potential of each of these Lopez de Heredia selections, critic Neal Martin declares "a bottle of Lopez de Heredia is an individual and each time you meet, you may see a different side to its personality," reflecting the pure authenticity, remarkable ageability and striking complexity of these top vintages and promising pleasurable drinking ahead for Rioja fans and Spanish wine collectors who act quickly to secure their picks from this value packed offer.

96JS 95WA 95V 94D

Savory berries, plums, iron, minerals, tobacco, ink and blood oranges. Very bright, juicy and structured, with sensational balance, aged savoriness and brightness that are typical of Tondonia reds. Beautiful now.

96 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (Aug 2024)

The 2012 Viña Tondonia Reserva comes from a very dry year, with 25% less rain than the average (at the time), resulting in lower yields of very healthy grapes that delivered wines with nice balance between alcohol and polyphenols, making it very apt for the aging in barrel. It had a slightly longer élevage in barrel, six years. The wine is aromatic with a developed profile, spicy and tertiary (forest floor, a touch of brick dust and iodine), complex and nuanced. The palate is full and round, with polished tannins and a long, dry finish. It has a textbook Tondonia nose and profile. 250,000 bottles produced.

95 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Feb 2024)

The 2012 Viña Tondonia is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, cultivated on the meander of the Ebro River in Rioja Alta. This garnet wine reveals aromas of ash and plum marmalade, with a faintly herbal core and hints of oaky cedar. Dry and lean, the fairly chalky texture lingers long, concluding with a compact, flavorful and lasting finish. The 2012 is a beautiful old-school Rioja.

95 points, Joaquín Hidalgo, Vinous (Apr 2024)

All you can expect from a classical Viña Tondonia with its focused intensity and muscular yet very elegant tannins. At once assertive and silky, with juicy red and blue fruit gliding through the palate while being pleasantly pulled back by an energetic, iodine verve. Subtle, hovering, brooding notes of tobacco, mocha and wet forest floor. 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% Graciano and Mazuelo, bottled in January 2022 having matured in 225-litre American oak barrels for six years.

"One of the most dynamic winemakers in Argentina"

James Suckling

Crafted by B-21 favorite Marcelo Pelleriti, the first Argentinian-born winemaker to garner a perfect Parker score for a Bordeaux wine, the alluring 96 pt. 2019 Marcelo Pelleriti Selection Blend of Terroir reveals fresh, fragrant dark fruit balanced by creamy refined tannins on a smooth, long-lasting finish, a masterful blend of old vine Malbec from Mendoza's Uco Valley from a rock star winemaker built to enjoy over the next decade at an unfathomable value price.

Renowned as the incredible talent behind transforming the Grand Vin of two Pomerol estates including producing the 100 pt. 2010 La Violette, Marcelo Pelleriti established his personal label Mendoza winery on his family's 110-year-old farm in La Consulta in the Uco Valley in 2007, a region described as encapsulating "the spirit of winemaking precision and creativity" in Argentina by Vinous' Joaquin Hidalgo and called "Argentina's Napa Valley" by critic Tim Atkin. Sourced from a diverse range of vineyards throughout Uco Valley with a variety of alluvial, mineral-rich soils, Marcelo crafted the elegantly balanced 2019 Marcelo Pelleriti Selection Blend of Terroir from 85% old vine Malbec and 15% Cabernet Franc grown at high altitudes in the Andes foothills, many of the pre-phylloxera, gnarled Malbec vines planted over 100 years ago at 1,000 meters above sea level. After co-fermenting the hand harvested grapes with indigenous yeasts, Marcelo aged the impressive 2019 Blend of Terroir for 16-22 months in French oak barrels with 18 months longer in bottle, yielding a "well-crafted and keenly priced" blend according to Neal Martin of Vinous revealing dense luscious fruit with velvety tannins and layers of complexity promising longevity.

From "a creative hotspot producing some of Argentina's best and most modern wines" according to Vinous' Joaquin Hidalgo, the exceptional 96 pt. 2019 Marcelo Pelleriti Selection Blend of Terroir reflects Marcelo Pelleriti's passion and expertise as a leading producer of terroir-expressive wines in the Uco Valley, offering his loyal following and collectors of Argentina's best red wines an exciting opportunity to enjoy a thrilling, age worthy Malbec from a remarkable winemaker at an equally remarkable price.

B-21 Top Recommendation

"The 2022 Chianti Classico Berardenga is superb. Rich and deep yet also quite translucent, the 2022 is an archetype of Castelnuovo Berardenga." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The iconic Fèlsina estate has been setting the bar for decades in the Castelnuovo Berardenga sub-zone of the Chianti Classico DOCG, not only for sheer quality and class but for stupendous value as well. Case in point is this overachieving Chianti Classico standout that James Suckling calls "a well-balanced, seductive and lively red." Its classic southern Chianti Sangiovese in its effusive fruit character that oscillates between bright reds and crunchy darks, all with vivid, fresh, Mediterranean herbal undertones providing lift and layers. The varying elevations and soil types of the vineyard sources ensures that the wine maintains its hallmark personality across vintages, so this "potent, super-classic Chianti Classico" is always one of the smartest, most consistently reliable buys in its price tier.

92JS 92KO 91V 91WE 91D 90WS

A well-balanced, seductive and lively red with aromas of forest berries, red currants, warm herbs and some crushed peppercorns. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins. Juicy berry character with a lift of spices bringing energy and vitality on the palate and onto the tactile finish. Drink now.

92 points, James Suckling (Jul 2024)

Red berry, dark spice, blue flower and whiffs of botanical herb form the nose on the elegant 2022 Felsina Beradenga. On the smooth, savory palate, supple tannins seamlessly support juicy Morello cherry, raspberry and white pepper before a soothing licorice finish.

92 points, Kerin O'Keefe (Jul 2024)

The 2022 Chianti Classico Berardenga is superb. Rich and deep yet also quite translucent, the 2022 is an archetype of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Black cherry, leather, spice, tobacco, menthol and dried herbs inform this potent, super-classic Chianti Classico. This is beautifully done, especially for the year.

91 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jul 2024)

Aromas of black cherry, pomegranate, fresh figs and top soil create a nose that's tangy, but with depth. Blackberries headline the palate, while undertones of dark chocolate and more earth provide balance. Tannins are firm yet flexible, and acid is vibrant.

91 points, Danielle Callegari, Wine Enthusiast (Dec 2024)

At the southeastern end of Chianti Classico, the Fèlsina property spills into the Chianti Colli Senesi zone where, on a clear day you can see all the way to Siena, just 15km away. Harnessing its sunbathed setting, the 2022 is immediate and effusive in its charms. It evokes Maritime pine, scrubby Mediterranean brush and wild yellow broom, building in concentration as it glides fluently across the palate, where rocky minerals meet ripe strawberry. Vibrant, if a bit brisk to finish.

91 points, Michaela Morris, Decanter (Feb 2024)

alking the line between cherry and berry flavors and earth and iron notes, this red is bright and juicy midpalate, firming up on the long finish. Balanced overall, needing a year to knit together. Best from 2026 through 2033. 22,000 cases made, 6,500 cases imported.

2021 Petrolo Galatrona (750ml)
Merlot from Val d'Arno di Sopra, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

"This is just a tremendous wine by any measure." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Widely considered one of the world's finest collectible Merlots, Petrolo's Galatrona hit astounding heights in 2021. The Galatrona vineyard in the southeast Chianti hills is ideally suited to Merlot, with southeast exposure and loamy clay soils rich in marl, shale, and sandstone that retain plenty of moisture in the hot Tuscan summers. This superb terroir allows for a beautifully expressive wine seemingly regardless of vintage conditions, and what's more it routinely stands along side iconic bottlings like Masseto and Messorio at a mere fraction of their prices.

The 2021 has garnered huge press from across the critical spectrum, with a pair of 98-point scores and a pair of 97-point scores for good measure. Antonio Galloni describes "a feeling of vertical, explosive energy that catapults the 2021 into the stratosphere," while Wine Spectator calls it "seamless and luxuriously saturated ... more about finesse and elegance than power, with a vibrant profile and superlong finish."

Galatrona's track record is iron-clad, one of the finest in the region and certainly in the top echelon of Italian Bordeaux-varietal wines, and the 2021 is all teed up to become another legend in the making for this iconic Tuscan superstar, at a razor-sharp price that's nearly unbeatable in the market.

98V 98JS #90 Top 100 97WA 97WE 97D 96WS

The 2021 Galatrona is a fine follow-up to the 2020. In most vintages, Galatrona is very showy right out of the gate. That is not at all the case with the 2021, a wine that is going to need a number of years to be at its finest. Black cherry, plum, mocha, leather, licorice and incense infuse the 2021 with tremendous complexity. More than anything else, I admire a feeling of vertical, explosive energy that catapults the 2021 into the stratosphere. This is a tremendous wine by any measure.

98 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Aug 2023)

The aromas here are very distinct with dried flowers such as lavender and violets. Some sage as well. Black berries and black olive skin. Full-bodied yet linear and energetic with very fine tannins and fantastic length. Fresh and lively in the finish. Merlot. Best after 2026.

98 points, James Suckling (Aug 2023)

#90 - James Suckling Top 100 of 2023

The 2021 Val d'Arno di Sopra Galatrona shows extremely focused aromas, but very generous ones all the while, with soft mint, cherry and stracciatella over a full-bodied texture with soft layers of spice and cedarwood. The wine boasts an elegantly chalky quality to the tannins, but the mouthfeel is so generous, everything irons out beautifully over the palate. It ages in a combination of new and used barrique. Annual production is about 30,000 bottles.

97+ points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Mar 2024)

The nose showcases a vast world of savory aromas, from sanguine to metallic to woody to earthy, with cranberries, currants and dark berries providing sweet contrast. A lively palate runs with the warmth of earth and just-ripened fruit, alongside austere tannins that promise ageworthiness. An absolutely acrobatic feat in Merlot.

97 points, Danielle Callegari, Wine Enthusiast (Dec 2023)

Vivid purple in the glass, gorgeous black cherry and blackcurrant aromas with touches of florality - this 100% Merlot smells wonderfully scented and inviting. Smooth, ample, really quite seductive on the palate, sensual almost in the silky but gripping tannins, beautifully ripe blackcurrant and cherry fruit and crunchy, crisp acidity that is not too sharp or too obvious but lifts the palate and gives a thrill and wonderful freshness to the overall expression. Beautifully presented, harmonious, balanced and totally enjoyable from the first to last sip. A gorgeous wine, intense yet energetic, full of flavour and textural nuance. Totally unputdownable, although with lots of potential for improvement over ageing. The wine spent 18 months in French oak tonneaux and barriques, 30% new. 3.56pH.

97 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jul 2023)

Though seamless and lusciously saturated with black currant, blackberry, violet, iron, tobacco and spice aromas and flavors, this red is also solidly built, with polished tannins. Nevertheless, this is more about finesse and elegance than power, with a vibrant profile and superlong finish. Merlot. Best from 2025 through 2042. 2,917 cases made, 150 cases imported.

2021 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (750ml)
Sangiovese from Montepulciano, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

It's rare that such a renowned and reference-point estate like Avignonesi keeps pushing new boundaries instead of just resting on their laurels, but that's exactly what this iconic property has been up to for several vintages. And as Eric Guido of Vinous puts it, "The results are pretty stunning." After all, these fan-favorite, best-selling Tuscan reds have been a staple of B-21's Italian portfolio for years, and the 2021 Vino Nobile di Montalcino is poised to break records.

"Avignonesi’s flagship bottling remains a fantastic value for first-class Vino Nobile..." - Eric Guido, Vinous

The estate's pioneering approach of crafting this wine out of 100% Prugnolo Gentile (the local Sangiovese strain) has made it a singular expression that has helped define the entire Vino Nobile category. The exceptional 2021 vintage has resulted in "a wine of austere elegance on the nose" and a palate that's "medium- to full-bodied with ripe and velvety tannins and lifted, precise acidity." All of it adds up to another stupendous overachiever at our remarkable private client price, which we've come to expect from Avignonesi at this point. It's all the more impressive considering you can stock up big and stash some away in the cellar – as Eric Guido notes, "it will be worth the wait."

95JS

A wine of austere elegance on the nose due to a tight mix of red cherries and sweet violets soaked in orange zest. The juicy palate is medium- to full-bodied with ripe and velvety tannins and lifted, precise acidity. The savory and mostly floral aftertaste is full of tension. Great sample. Drink or hold.

Producing its outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Bordeaux Blend from a small 17-hectare vineyard not far from Beychevelle and Ducru-Beaucaillou, the centuries' old Chateau Saint-Pierre was revitalized in the 1980s by the energetic Henri Martin, known as a driving force behind innovations at Chateau Latour and as the founder of Chateau Gloria. Planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parcels of Merlot and Cab Franc on the gravelly Beychevelle plateau, the vines at Saint Pierre average 50 years of age, tended by a team of 45 vineyard workers under the direction of Remy Di Constanzio, former technical director of Cos D'Estournel. Now owned by Henri's daughter Françoise and her husband Jean-Louis Triaud.

97WI 96JS 96JA

The 2019 Saint-Pierre is deep garnet-purple in color. It prances out with showy notes of blueberry pie, blackberry preserves, and blackcurrant cordial, plus suggestions of vanilla pod, chocolate box, and cinnamon toast, with a touch of violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers amazing freshness and vivacity, with layers of energetic black and blue fruits and a very finely grained texture, finishing long and perfumed.

97 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Feb 2023)

Very pretty and typical for the appellation with aromas of blackcurrants, violets and sandalwood that follow through to a full body with layers of polished tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Lasts a long time on the palate. Classic structure. Drink after 2027.

96 points, James Suckling (Dec 2022)

Violet-edged, with sculpted fruit and an enticing mix of precision and generosity, with classic St Julien balance. Great depth of fruit, crushed rocks, smoked earth, tobacco. Takes time to show itself, but there is sweet blackberry fruit here, and a purity of expression that has clear long-term potential. At this point they were working 15% organic, before switching to 100% the following year. 49% new oak. Harvest September 23 to October 4, Eric Boissenot consultant.

2023 Produttori del Barbaresco Nebbiolo delle Langhe (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Langhe, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

"While not as dense as some vintages, it is a vibrant and boisterous mid-weight mouthful." - Decanter

What La Chablisiènne is to Burgundy, Produttori del Barbaresco is to Piedmont (and Italy overall) –the undisputed standard bearer for excellence in a wine co-operative. This legendary producer has been setting the tone for Barbaresco for decades, turning out vintage after vintage of reference-point, collectible expressions from their incredible stable of prized crus.

Of course,  we're eagerly awaiting the release of the inimitable, single-vineyard Riservas from the monumental 2021 vintage, but we're also getting a glimpse of another special vintage on the horizon in the 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo, a superb "Baby Barbaresco" if ever there was one. Sourced exclusively from Barbaresco-designated sites, this is a lovely representation of a solid vintage for the region, offering fans of the old-school Barbarescos something to dive into while they wait for the collectible gems to come of age. Kerin O'Keefe calls it "a fantastic wine" for its lifted, perfumed aromatics and tense, lively palate structure, and we can confirm – this is crowd-pleasing Nebbiolo at its best, with an added element of top-notch pedigree to take it up a level or two.

93KO 92WA 91D

The 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo from Produttori del Barbaresco is a fantastic wine that offers beautiful aromas of perfumed face powder, violet, rose and fragrant wild berry. Showing great tension, the spicy, savory palate features tart cherry, crushed strawberry, clove, white pepper and star anise alongside lithe tannins.

93 points, Kerin O'Keefe (Sep 2025)

This wine was bottled approximately one month before I tasted it in October and was set to hit the market in November 2024. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo shows a shiny ruby appearance and offers crunchy fruit flavors with blueberry and tart raspberry. Fruit is collected from the sites and the warmer microclimates that don't end up in the Barbaresco program, and the wine sees a shorter maceration time, lasting 21 days.

92 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

The 2023 leaps from the glass with clove, pepper and nutmeg. While not as dense as some vintages, it is a vibrant and boisterous mid-weight mouthful. Pleasantly cheek-puckering sour cherry and blackcurrant are amplified by frisky acidity. The spicy finish makes for an appropriate bookend. Exclusively from Barbaresco-designated vineyards, this is a blend of lots that don’t make it into the classic or cru Barbaresco bottlings.

2022 Domaine du Cayron Gigondas (750ml)
From Gigondas, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

"...a medium to full-bodied, gamey, exotic, balanced Gigondas that's just about overflowing with character." - Jeb Dunnuck

A favorite producer of B-21 Rhône fans and collectors offering incredible quality at an unbeatable value, Domaine du Cayron has hits the mark once again with their 2022 Gigondas.

Fifth-generation sisters Roseline, Cendrine, and Delphine source their family’s single cuvée from old vines planted at some of the appellation’s highest altitudes, the domain's name Cayron referring to the crest of the Dentelles. Spanning nearly 17 hectares on 20 different parcels, the domaine’s vineyards are planted with mostly Grenache and smaller amounts of Syrah, Cinsault, and Mourvèdre on a mix of clay, marl and limestones soils. Employing traditional methods that are “old school all the way” according to Jeb Dunnuck, the Faraud sisters have produced "a killer effort offering beautiful darker fruits supported by some meaty, garrigue, and iron-like nuances" in their 2022 Gigondas.

Along with Dunnuck, Vinous' Nicolas Greinacher declares "it’s an outstanding Gigondas worth seeking out" that will captivate fans of bold Southern Rhône reds on the first sip, while providing consistent pleasure for the next decade.

93JD 93V

The 2022 Gigondas checks in as 78% Grenache, 14% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault and Mourvèdre, raised in foudres, with the Syrah in demi-muids. It's a killer effort offering beautiful darker fruits supported by some meaty, garrigue, and iron-like nuances. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, gamey, exotic, balanced Gigondas that's just about overflowing with character. I love it today, yet it has another 10-12 years of prime drinking.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2024)

The 2022 Gigondas is gorgeous, bundling intense orange blossom, licorice, ripe strawberry, leafy tones and a touch of graphite on the aromatic composition. Tightly structured by ripe tannins and balanced by a lifting freshness, the full-bodied 2022 requires at least four more years in a cool cellar to mellow. That said, it’s an outstanding Gigondas worth seeking out.

Saint-Pierre 2018 has a deep garnet-purple color. It gives up compelling scents of fresh blackcurrants, black cherry compote, and boysenberries, plus touches of star anise, cardamom, and incense, with a waft of wood smoke. Full-bodied, the palate has a plush texture and bags of black fruit, finishing long and fragrant.

96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Feb 2023)

Composed of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot, the 2018 Saint-Pierre bursts from the glass with a glorious perfume of kirsch, blackcurrant pastilles, black raspberries and cedar chest with hints of red roses, pencil shavings and spice box. The medium to full-bodied palate coats the mouth with velvety tannins and beautifully knit freshness, supporting the generous black and red berry layers, finishing long and perfumed. It needs a good four years for the oak to marry and the fruit to really hit its stride, then should drink a further 20+ years.

95 points, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Saint-Pierre is even more intense than the Gloria on the nose, actually reminding me of the Léoville Poyferré that I tasted alongside. Copious black cherries, lavender, incense and violet just storm from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit laced with cedar and charcoal. Delivering wonderful delineation and focus and a disarming silky finish, this fulfills the promise that it showed from barrel. An outstanding Saint-Julien that should age well over the next 20–30 years.

95 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Mar 2021)

Sports a beam of cassis, plum puree and blackberry sauce running through the middle while roasted applewood, violet and sweet tobacco notes run along the edges. Everything meets and then extends through the finish, with an echo of warm cast iron at the very end. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2024 through 2038.

95 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2021)

With an almost Pauillac-like stature and structure, the 2018 Château Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) (77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot) offers a powerful bouquet of black currants, lead pencil, spicy oak, and chocolate and shows more earth and tobacco as it sits in the glass. Deeply hued, full-bodied, and concentrated, it has a stacked mid-palate, building tannins, and one heck of a great finish. It needs to be forgotten for 7-8 years and will keep for 2-3 decades.

94+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

Aromas of blackberries, currants, dried earth, coffee and chocolate orange, as well as some crushed stone. It’s medium-bodied with firm, tight-grained tannins. Fresh with lingering citrus zest and bitter chocolate. Fine texture. Try from 2024.

2013 Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation

97V 95WA

The 2013 Reserva Viña Tondonia is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% Graciano and Mazuelo, grown in the calcareous soils of the Tondonia meander in Rioja Alta. Aged extensively in American oak, it offers restrained black fruit, wild herbs, balsamic hints and sweet spices with gentle cedar and vanilla notes. Medium-bodied with chalky grip and a layered, tertiary finish, this is a benchmark classic—refined, enduring and unmistakably Tondonia.

97 points, Joaquín Hidalgo, Vinous (May 2025)

The canonical red 2013 Viña Tondonia Reserva has a developed nose of dried roses and tar that transported me to Piamonte but soon took me back to the López de Heredia cellars in Haro with the mixture of mushrooms, truffles, damp earth and decayed leaves, hints of brick dust and spice. 2013 was a rainy year, with 753 liters of it, well above the average of 530 liters in Haro. It was also a cooler year, and the ripeness was slow, so they didn't start picking until the seventh of October, but they had to hurry up because of the risk of botrytis. The crop was not so big, because they suffered from hail in July that affected the Viña Tondonia, coupled with strong winds that broke many branches. The breakdown in 2013 comes to 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho and 5% each Graciano and Mazuelo that fermented in old oak vats with indigenous yeasts. All the wines age in old American oak barrels in their caves, in this case for no less than six years. It comes in at 13% alcohol with a pH of 3.4 and 6.6 grams of acidity, perhaps a lighter vintage with higher acidity that translates into a lot of energy, a fine-boned palate and very fine tannins with a vibrant finish. 190,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021. It should be released in the spring of 2025, almost 12 years after the harvest. And look at the price...

This is as complex and savory as the rest of the Viña Tondonia wines, but also shows a tad more depth, with a hint of black plum and blue fruit on top of the orange rind, iron, tobacco and earthy spices. I continue to absolutely love what this estate puts in the bottle, and it remains an incredible value given its quality. The 2020 Château Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) reveals a deeper ruby/purple hue to go with gorgeous aromatics of blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, gravelly earth, and chocolate. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shows the more elegant, pure, precision style of the vintage, has perfectly integrated background oak, ripe tannins, and a great finish. This brilliant Saint Julien will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and have 30+years of overall longevity. Bravo.

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

Attractive aromas of blackberries, plum skins, cloves, cardamom, dark chocolate, cedar and graphite. Some wet stones, too. Full-bodied, opulent and broad-shouldered. Structured and refined. It has a deep core of ripe black fruit covered with layers of plush and velvety tannins that linger for a long time on the palate. Really long and even. Try after 2027.

96 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

The 2020 Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) is loaded with scents of blackberry jam, dried herbs, graphite, incense, espresso and licorice. This powerful, tannic Saint-Julien is going to need years to soften, but it is incredibly impressive in the early going. From barrel, the 2020 was quite unctuous, but today it has grown into a wine that marries opulence with classicism in grand style. the intensity of the Cabernet Sauvignon really comes through.

95 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

Rich, deep, young, vibrant, this is delicious, just at the begininning of its life, fiercely powerful tannins holding the blueberry and bilberry fruits in place, softened by cocoa dusting and liqourice on the finish. Remi di Constanzo technical director.

The 2020 Saint-Pierre is deep garnet-purple in color. It has slowly emerging scents of fresh blackcurrants, black raspberries, and redcurrant jelly, plus hints of cast-iron pan, cedar chest, and menthol. The medium-bodied palate is tightly packed with black and red berry layers, plus loads of mineral sparks, framed by ripe, fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with impressive length.

Bernheim Barrel Proof Batch A225 Wheat Whiskey (750ml)

A truly exceptional brand under the Heaven Hill banner, Bernheim still maintains a somewhat low profile compared to its HH stablemats like Craig, Rittenhouse, Larceny, and the like. The innovative, highly acclaimed wheated mashbill has built the whiskey's reputation into something of a cult favorite, and that's just for the flagship Straight Wheat release. Once they started releasing Barrel Proof batches twice a year, demand hit new highs, and it's always a struggle to keep a particular batch in stock for long.

The latest run, Batch A225, is sure to continue to the trend with its newly published, stellar 95-point score from Whisky Advocate, but fortunately we played our cards right and stocked up while we could. This is pure unadulterated wheated goodness, with all the gentle decadence we've come to know and love from the Bernheim profile. Even at full barrel proof, the aromas and flavors are so expressive and delineated that you'll be hard-pressed to keep your hands off it.

As the distillery dials in on the style, these highly limited expressions seem to get better and better with each successive release, so it's no surprise that A225 is arguably the best yet and serious score for keen-eyed whiskey aficionados.

The nose of the 2008 Viña Tondonia Reserva is very elegant, fresh and with an herbal twist, starting to show the complexity of the aged wines that are sometimes still too young when they are released 10+ years from the vintage! The palate is medium-bodied, with lightness and depth, very classical with extra freshness and all that is needed for a long development in bottle. This is the more Tondonia of the two vintages I tasted side by side. There are notes of maple syrup, smoke, licorice and crisp fruit. The palate is more austere, crunchy and reveals the chalkiness of the soils. There's more definition and precision here.

95 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Issue # 251 - Oct 2020)

Lots of dried fruit with plum, light raisin, chocolate and toasted oak. Some balsamic undertones. White truffles and dried flowers. Medium body, creamy tannins and savory, balsamic undertones. Extreme and unique, as always. Drink now.

Dark, bright-rimmed garnet. An expressive bouquet displays red and black currant, dried cherry, cigar box, vanilla, rose oil and cured tobacco scents plus a baking spice topnote. 2022 Le Pupille Saffredi (750ml)

B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Fattoria Le Pupille's flagship Saffredi has always been a top-echelon Tuscan collectible, with multiple 100-point vintages in its track record and a consistent reputation for delivering one of the finest expressions of the coastal Tuscan terroir available. Proprietor Elisabetta Geppetti has fashioned the estate and this benchmark wine into a standard bearer for Maremma, and now that her son, Ettore, has taken the reins, the future looks brighter than ever, as is plainly clear in the newly released, highly acclaimed 2022 Saffredi.

"To my mind, the 2022 stands apart from almost every other past vintage of Saffredi. This is a new direction for the wine that we can all happily embrace." - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

The 2022 growing season offered the winemaking team plenty of opportunity to take a different course with Saffredi, and they chose wisely. The 2022 "deftly plays upon the elegance and fruity brightness of the growing season, while also harnessing its freshness and its slightly more streamlined appeal," as noted by Monica Larner in her 98-point review. Decanter also tags it with 98 points, declaring, "The 2022 Saffredi is the result of the estate's hard work and it has paid dividends ... It's a stunner. Wow!" There isn't much more we can add to that, but to say that this is a can't-miss opportunity for savvy collectors to stack the cellar high and deep with a long-haul performer at the best price in the country.

99JS 98WA 98D

This is a young wine with terrific depth and layers of fruit. It’s full-bodied with notes of eucalyptus, lavender and sage and hints of matchsticks and oranges. It’s linear and tight at the end, with an energetic finish. Very Saffredi in nature. Better than the 2021. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 10% petite verdot.

99 points, James Suckling (Aug 2024)

This is one of only a handful of wines made on the Tuscan Coast that has managed to interpret the vintage in such an excellent manner. The Fattoria le Pupille 2022 Saffredi (a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot) deftly plays upon the elegance and fruity brightness of the growing season, while also harnessing its freshness and its slightly more streamlined appeal. The wine is nuanced and layered with fine details that recall wild berry, spice, blue flower and blood orange. To my mind, the 2022 stands apart from almost every other past vintage of Saffredi. This is a new direction for the wine that we can all happily embrace.

98 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Feb 2025)

Menthol-infused dark berry aromas open the door to an intense and juicy mouthful of precisely wrought red and black berries and cherries. Wonderful lip-smacking sapidity and finely integrated tannins complete the package. The 2022 Saffredi is the result of the estate's hard work and it has paid dividends. Elisabetta Geppetti's son, Ettore – in just his third vintage overseeing the winemaking without the experienced hand of ex-consultant Luca d'Attoma – has beautifully interpreted the vintage. He tells me that, unusually, it took the team three harvests at different times to obtain the freshness evident in the wine. It's a stunner. Wow!

2006 Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva (1.5L)

The red flagship 2006 Viña Tondonia Reserva was inspired by the vineyards of the Médoc but produced with local grapes, 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, which achieved 13% alcohol in 2006. It always matures in used American oak barriques for some six years. The oldest of all the reds I tasted, it was also the one with more freshness, which speaks to the quality of the vineyard. This takes the lion's share of the 400,000 bottles the winery produces, with some 220,000 bottles filled over a period of 12 consecutive days in May 2014.

95 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Issue # 235 - Feb 2018)

This is a remarkably lively wine for a 12-year-old Rioja with notes of licorice and dried cherries and a very elegant tannin structure that runs through the medium to full body of this red like a silk thread. The dry finish is long and polished. Drink or hold.

Sweet berries, cherries, cedar and dried flowers on the nose. Some lemon and lime zest, too! Medium-to full-bodied with tight, integrated tannins that show wonderful length and reserve. So fresh and vivid. Lots of energy. A wonderful, classic wine. Drink or hold.

2023 Jacques Saumaize Pouilly-Fuisse Haut de la Roche Vieilles Vignes (750ml)
Chardonnay from Maconnais, Burgundy, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"A wine of unmistakable terroir character and class." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Burgundy Buyer

Pouilly-Fuissé's star is on an undeniable upward trajectory in recent years, starting with the promotion of several of its top sites to 1er Cru status in 2020, a move that many saw as a harbinger of rising prices along with rising reputation. In some instances, that's been the case, but by and large we're still seeing some of the smartest buys in Burgundy emerge from the appellation's best sites, which is also drawing attention to its best producers, many of whom remained relatively unknown beyond the usual insider's circles until now.

One of those domaines in Jacques Saumaize, whom we've become big fans of in recent years as their vineyard stable and winemaking are on par with the best in the appellation. Case in point is this marvelous old-vine gem from a vineyard that just screams terroir. While it's not officially a 1er Cru (yet) Le Haut de la Roche is a spectacular piece of real estate right at the base of the Roche de Vergisson, one of the twin towering rock formations that dominate Pouilly-Fuissé's topography. The soils up here are as bare as bare gets, so the 50-year-old vines are forced to plumb deep into the limestone mother rock, and the result is a stunning expression of place. "Pure, shimmering minerality" is the calling card on the nose, while View From the Cellar's John Gilman describes a palate that's "crisp, complex and full-bodied, with a beautiful core of fruit, superb mineral undertow, zesty acids and a very elegant, vibrant, poised and seamlessly balanced finish."

If you're a seasoned fan of white Burgundy, everything mentioned above should have your attention, as the 2023 Le Haut de la Roche from Saumaize is a quintessential example of what we love about these wines, all for a price that makes it easy for anyone to get on board.

94AK 94JG

The most complete wine of Saumaize’s 2023s, the Le Haut de la Roche is a top-flight effort from poor, stony soils high up on the slope of Roche de Vergisson, and that terroir is evident in this elegant Pouilly-Fuisse. Pure, shimmering minerality leads the nose, very expressive yet also poised and precise. Fine citrus aromas mingle with riper notes of soft peach and apricot, and there’s no apparent wood. Intriguing complexity comes out as white geranium, lime cordial, and faints hints of spicy basil and pastry crust. The exceedingly pretty palate carries a gorgeous mineral signature on elegant weight, suave texture, and super fine acids. Floral notes of apple and lemon blossom come through, with barely ripe peach and green apple skin adding depth. A wine of unmistakable terroir character and class.

94 points, Andrew Kitz, B-21 Burgundy Buyer (Sep 2025)

The Pouilly-Fuissé “le Haut de la Roche” bottling from the Saumaize family is outstanding in 2023. This wine is made from fifty year-old vines that are planted right at the base of the Roche de Vergisson, on extremely thin topsoils before one reached the Mother Rock of pure limestone. The wine’s aromatic constellation is gorgeous, wafting from the glass in a mix of pear, golden delicious apple, almond, white lilies, citrus zest, a gentle framing of oak and an almost dusty expression of limestone minerality. On the palate the wine is crisp, complex and full-bodied, with a beautiful core of fruit, superb mineral undertow, zesty acids and a very elegant, vibrant, poised and seamlessly balanced finish. The backend lift here is lovely. This reminds me a bit of the old bottlings from André Forest, whose Les Crays single vineyard wine was my first introduction to truly great, classic Pouilly-Fuissé all the way back in the second half of the 1980s! (Drink between 2025-2050)

2022 Le Pupille Saffredi (1.5L)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Maremma, Tuscany, Italy

Initially produced under the Faethm label, the Fingers Crossed wines from Nicolas Krankl (son of Sine Qua Non's Manfred Krankl) are now under their own banner, and they're making an immediate splash in the cult collectible scene, which is soon to become a bigger splash with the latest set of stratospheric scores from Jeb Dunnuck.

"These are consistently world-class wines that show remarkable balance between richness and elegance." - Jeb Dunnuck

Sourcing from some of Santa Barbara's best sites including Bien Nacido and Stolpman, as well as some old parcels of Sine Qua Non, Nicolas is blazing a real trail for himself. Indeed, as Jeb Dunnuck makes clear, "It's important to realize that these are not Sine Qua Non copycats. They have their own style, which leans slightly more Old World, with notable stem influence and elegance, while still delivering serious California fruit." But they do share the Sine Qua Non penchant for top-shelf accolades, as Dunnuck's recent 100-point score for the 2022 Life and Death Syrah indicates. This "singular, as well as absolutely perfect, wine" is poised to become an instant coveted classic, while "the marriage of richness, purity, and finesse" in the 99-point Grenache-based Red Wine "is something to behold." Best of all, each wine has the old-school foundation to be a cellar all-star, so you can (and should) count on holding onto a few bottles for a while. The only caveat is that our stock at this incredible, must-see pricing is highly limited, so you'll want to pull the trigger while you can.

The 2022 Red Wine Life And Death is Grenache-dominated yet includes 22% Syrah, 13% each of Mourvèdre and Graciano, and 8.5% Petite Sirah, all of which was fermented with 25% whole clusters and brought up in 70% new oak. It offers a sensational perfume of black raspberry and black cherry fruits intermixed with camphor, lavender, white flowers, and peppery, almost garrigue-like nuances. With full-bodied richness, remarkable purity, and a massive, yet somehow elegant, seamless mouthfeel as well as incredible length, it's a masterpiece of a Rhône-like blend from California's Central Coast that could come from nowhere else. The fruit sourcing here is a mix of Bien Nacido, Stolpman, Alta Mesa, Sanger, and Rancho Boa Vista, and the marriage of richness, purity, and finesse is something to behold. This beauty will evolve for 15-20 years if well stored. Drink: 2025-2040.

Lochlea Fallow Edition Third Crop Single Malt Scotch Whisky
From Ayrshire, Lowlands, Scotland
B-21 Top Recommendation

"Lochlea’s Fallow Edition is in its final release, and boy, is it going out with a bang." - Whisky Advocate

One of the more exciting yet under-the-radar rising stars in the Scotch scene, Lochlea should (and probably will) be on every single malt fanatic's list of must-try discoveries in short order. The Lochlea property itself, once belonging to the immortal Scottish poet Robert Burns, was historically a cattle farm, and that's what owners Neil and Jen McGeoch had in mind when they purchased it in 2006. However, it was soon apparent that cows wouldn't cut it financially, and they turned to the property's other historical cash crop. Now, 50 acres of malting barley are the backbone of this grain-to-glass operation, with the old cattle-farming structures and facilities converted into a modern, functioning distillery in 2016.

Long-time Laphroaig master distiller John Campbell set the standards with the first batches. That uncompromising quality is now seen across the board in the entire range, but it's their seasonal releases that truly capture the spirit of Lochlea as a working farm distillery, each release named for the agricultural cycle corresponding to the season. The 94-point Fallow Edition (Third Crop) is matured in ex-oloroso Sherry butts to bring forth a clear autumnal character, showcasing all the gorgeous oloroso depth and beautifully charming profile of Lochlea's malt. This is the final release of this bottling, as Lochlea is turning its focus to more experimental and single-cask expressions, along with their core line-up. It's impressively complex for a young whisky, but it's also just flat-out delicious. "A dram you’ll want to keep drinking," notes Whisky Advocate, "while you can!"

94WHA

Meant to drum up images of autumn on the farm, Lochlea’s Fallow Edition is in its final release, and boy, is it going out with a bang. The nose is redolent with wood spice, raisins, vanilla pastry cream, raspberries, Nutella, and cooked red fruit. The light-yet-luscious palate takes those notes up another notch: berries and raisins blend wonderfully with sweet malt, Black Forest cake, chocolate ganache, and cinnamon powder. A dram you’ll want to keep drinking...while you can! (Release date: 1/25)
