In 1821, four brothers of the distinguished Rodenbach family invested in a small brewery in Roeselare, in the West Flanders province of Belgium. Some fifty years later, the grandson of one of the founders took over directorship of the company. He travelled to England where he learned how to ripen beer in oak barrels and then mix old and young beers. Rodenbach became the world's best-know 'mixed fermentation' brewery. In 1998, the company was purchased by Belgium Craft Breweries, owner of Palm Brewery. Rodenbach, the original sour ale brewery of Belgium.
