The bottle alone announced I was in for something very special. This throwback, low-shouldered, heavy looking bottle – half as tall as most others – immediately identifiable to anyone who has drank the world famous Laurent Perrier Cuvee Rose, has never been filled with any other Italian sparkling wine to my knowledge. The very look and feel of this gave me pause. This is NOT Prosecco, my friends, let me set that straight from the start. This ethereal liquid hails from hallowed ground; a zone passionately protected – DOCG enforced in fact – called Cartizze. Nestled on a rocky hillside northeast of Valdobbiadene, where the soils – once ancient sea beds – are rich in minerality, this is the prized sub-zone of Valdobbiadene Superiore de Cartizze DOCG. Veneto's answer to a top vintage of Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, this is simply and staggeringly delicate, captivating; with layers of acacia, exotic fruits and brilliant apple nuances. The minerality runs through this like a fine chord, a symphony of a "Champagne" that only true masters can perform. Brilliance such as this will convince even the most seasoned Champagne connoisseur; treasures are still there to be found.
