"We’ve been looking for a new go-to Alsace sparkler for a long time, and we found it in this one." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Alsace Buyer
B-21 Alsace buyer Andrew Kitz couldn't believe his great fortune to meet Sophie and Julien Schaal at this year's Wine Paris. First of all, they're an unbelievably charming and affable couple who display a level of enthusiasm for their work that you rarely see in the wine world. They're also some of Alsace's most conscientious young winemakers, turning out really stellar results from the entry-level standouts under Sophie's label to Julien's critically acclaimed Grands Crus (more on those down the road).
Sophie's Crémant d’Alsace is simply brilliant for the price and reflective of her attention to detail and passionate work ethic. Sourcing from prime vineyards around Hunawhir, the wine is made in extra brut style and sees 24 months on the lees before disgorgement. The Chardonnay/Pinot Blanc blend works in great harmony resulting in a distinctive yet effortlessly familiar style. "Based on the warm, sunny 2022 vintage, it shows upfront, immediate charm in its aromas," writes Andrew, while "the palate is bright and vivid with ample energy and a creamy, easy-going finish."
We love a good sure bet in value sparklers, and once we got our hands on this one, we were sure we had it in spades. It has the approachability of can't-miss, everyday performer and enough class and poise to shine in almost any setting.
Sophie Schaal’s Crémant d’Alsace is a great example of how well Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc play together in sparkling wine. Based on the warm, sunny 2022 vintage, it shows upfront, immediate charm in its aromas of pear, honeysuckle, and lemon sorbet. The palate is bright and vivid with ample energy and a creamy, easy-going finish. Apple, white peach, and a sweet cream note are backed up by a faint touch of autolytic toast on the mid-palate. We’ve been looking for a new go-to Alsace sparkler for a long time, and we found it in this one.
