The 2024 Semillón comes from Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo and was aged 15 months in French oak, 35% under flor. Expressive for the variety, it opens with hazelnut, nutty hints, vanilla, caramel and candied fruit. Dry and enveloping on entry, it narrows through the mid-palate with a compact texture. The finish stretches the aging flavors and recovers some of the breadth lost in 2023. It is a stylistic wine in which aging defines the profile, moving Semillón into another register.

Echoing my sentiments about the 2023 vintage reviewed last year, I found the 2024 Semillon to be the most impressive wine in the El Enemigo range, completely transcending its price point. It originates from Agrelo and matured for 15 months in barrels with a significant proportion under flor. Honey, chamomile, dried flowers and stone fruit aromas are followed by a deep, rounded mouthfeel, giving way to a long finish layered with elegant creamy richness and nutty undertones.

A semillon that shows aromas of minerals, beeswax and lemon peel with touches of fine lees, toast and white nuts. Bright, pure and round on the palate, with a medium to full body and a long. attractive, bone-dry, minerally finish with more bones than flesh. Drink from 2027.

Another little gem in the Tesco range (along with the Mount Pleasant Hunter Valley Semillon, too), this Argentinian iteration is gorgeously toasty and complex on the nose, showing a little sponge cake and baking spice richness. Vanilla and custard creaminess lingers on the finish. There's good tension here, and the oak is showing through somewhat at present. This should develop very well with some years in bottle, so why not grab two bottles: open one now and enjoy with a rich creamy chicken dish; and save the other for a few years down the line. Coming in under £20 a bottle, it's hard to argue otherwise.
