A structured and intense wine with aromas of dark cherries, black truffles and cedar. Medium- to full-bodied with a tight and focused palate that gives such tension and ultra-fine tannins that melt beautifully into the wine, where the tannins are almost not felt but you know are there. Terra cotta and spices at the end. A top wine. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Fattoria Buiano is a dense, packed wine. Black fruit, lavender, licorice, mocha, spice and new leather stain the palate. This Castellina Gran Selezione captures all the natural intensity of the vintage. Like all the 2022s, the Buiano is tightly wound and not fully expressive. Aging is in 5HL casks. The Buiano is another wine I look forward to tasting down the line.

Purchased in 2017, the Buiano estate extends over Castellina’s western flank with over 50ha of vines. Elevation is a modest 290m, but northern exposures offset the balmy Mediterranean heat. While not necessarily upfront in its pleasures, the 2022 is difficult not to like. A buttoned-up, serious nose reveals its intrigues slowly. Mint and cedar make way for blackberry, plum and myrtle. The palate is decidedly firm, dense and full of vigour yet never hard-edged. Dark berries are dusted with cocoa powder. Dry grainy tannins cinch then yield with supple sweetness. Made for the cellar.
