From one of the top Barbera producers in the Piedmont region of Asti, the fresh and lively 92 pt. 2021 Pico Maccario Barbera d’Asti Lavignone offers fruity, floral aromas and vivid, layered dark fruit on a smooth, mineral-tinged finish, an easy to love Italian red that drinks well above its price point, priced to pick up by the case and enjoy often.

Established in 1997 by brothers Pico and Vitaliano Maccario, Pico Maccario is located in the town of Mombaruzzo an hour’s drive southeast of the city of Asti, utilizing their family’s expertise as Barbera growers in the region for nearly four generations to produce their own exceptional Barbera wines in the Barbera d’Asti DOCG. Defining the differences between the Piedmont’s top two Barbera regions of Asti and Alba, Vinous critic Antonio Galloni points out, “In Asti, Barbera does not compete with Nebbiolo for the best vineyard sites. As a result, the best Barberas from Asti are fabulous wines that develop gorgeous aromatic and flavor complexity.” Spanning a total of 70 contiguous hectares in Asti, the vineyards of Pico Maccario boast 60 hectares planted exclusively to Barbera, with some of the oldest vines over 80 years of age. Sourced from the gently rolling hillside vineyards surrounding the winery, the 2021 Barbera d’Asti Lagivnone was aged in stainless steel tanks for 9 months with 4 months longer in bottle, preserving its bright flavors and depth while impeccably balancing acidity and naturally low tannins.

Reflecting its exceptional Asti terroir, the appealing 92 pt. Pico Maccario Barbera d’Asti Lavignone is the perfect choice for an Italian house red, its gorgeous silky fruit and subtle acidity making it equally delicious alone or when paired with a range of food, a beautifully balanced and appealing Barbera bargain priced for stocking up.
