Crafted as a forerunner to the Super Tuscan movement and one of the region’s top rated international blends, the elegantly balanced, double 96-point 2021 Mazzei Concerto is a seamless combination of fresh, vibrant Sangiovese fruit and the layered opulence of rich Cabernet Sauvignon, produced from the legendary Mazzei family’s hillside Tuscany.

Initially crafted as an "outright experiment" in 1981 and now celebrating its 40^th anniversary, the cuvée was christened "Concerto" to pay homage to its harmonious expression of the estate’s two most important varietals. The Sangiovese comes from a parcel in the estate’s mid-slope terroir called Scassi, and the Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the small Brotine parcel with a unique microclimate created by the surrounding oak forest. Winemaker Gionata Puglignani aged the Sangiovese in French oak tonneaux and the Cabernet Sauvignon in smaller French oak barriques for 18 months with four additional months in concrete tanks before bottling, yielding lush, juicy fruit in an enticing, seamless blend described by Decanter as “a really delicious, mouthwatering compelling glass of wine” that’s built to evolve over the next few decades.

The Mazzei 2021 Concerto di Fonterutoli shows a lifted bouquet with floral aromas of lavender, iris and delicate earthy tones at the back. There is plenty of primary fruit over well-integrated oak and soft tannins. Rainfall was happily abundant in this vintage, and the harvest was extremely rewarding, resulting in very healthy grapes. Analytical results underline fruit concentration, high polyphenolic values and a good sugar to acidity ratio.

A delicious, measured and carefully structured wine, builds slowly through the palate, has typicity of Tuscan Sangiovese in its generosity, held in where it needs to be, and bursting with juicy red fruits, dark spices, turmeric, clove, tobacco, tar. Savoury and yet generous, with mouthwatering juiciness on the finish. Located in Castellina in Chianti, winemaker Gionata Puglignani, owned by the Mazzei family. Ageing in small French oak barrels for the Cabernet Sauvignon, larger sized for the Sangiovese, 70% new, plus three months in concrete tanks before release. Second tasting after a recent vertical, absolutely confirms its success.

The full-bodied palate is taut with muscular red berry and savory flavors, supported by firm, chewy tannins and bright acidity, finishing with impressive length and energy.
