Described by Antonio Galloni of Vinous as “exuberant, deeply expressive wines,” the 96 pt. 2021 Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and 94 pt. 2021 Kosta Browne Russian River Pinot Noir live up to the estate’s long-standing reputation for crafting rich and refined California Pinot Noirs, a pair of top scoring, age worthy Pinots from an outstanding Sonoma vintage ready to enjoy over the next decade at best on the market pricing.

Establishing their winemaking venture in 1997 in Santa Rosa with a portion of their restaurant tips, founders Dan Kosta and Michael Browne became known for producing cult favorite Pinot Noirs in the mid 2000’s, the Sonoma Coast and Russian River cuvees consistently garnering critical acclaim over the past two decades and now available in limited amounts outside of the winery’s exclusive member list under the ownership of Duckhorn Family Wines. Sourced from a celebrated Sonoma vintage featuring “greater concentration, structure and definition” according to the Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth, Kosta Browne winemaker Julien Howsepian fermented the tiny, ripe Pinot Noir berries in a mix of stainless steel, wood and concrete to create a bold and sophisticated style of California Pinot with intense flavors and bright acidity while maintaining impressive balance. Blended from eight prime vineyards throughout the coastal appellation including Gaps Crown, the 2021 Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir was aged in 38% new French oak for 15 months along with smaller amounts in wood cask and 1% new Austrian oak, yielding lightly spiced, concentrated red fruit with “grainy tannins and seamless freshness” according to the Wine Advocate’s Erin Brooks built to evolve over the next decade. Described as boasting “a classic feel with a long finish” by Jeb Dunnuck critic Audrey Frick, the 2021 Kosta Brown Russian River Pinot Noir was sourced from eight fog-influenced vineyards including Zio Tony and Keefer Ranch and aged in 34% new French oak for 15 months, revealing rich, earthy dark fruit with bright acidity and layers of ripe tannins promising a decade of evolution.

Reflecting on its decades’ long reputation as a top Pinot producer, winemaker Julien Howsepian regards his team as the “torchbearers of Kosta Browne’s legacy of artistry and innovation,” these 2021 Kosta Browne selections living up to the legacy and promising California Pinot fans who stock the cellar a decade of pleasurable drinking ahead.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley was matured for 15 months in 34% new oak. It has a medium ruby color and generous aromatic layers of lavender, licorice, eucalyptus and forest floor with a core of dark fruit. The medium-bodied palate is powerful, its concentrated fruit complemented by well-integrated oak spice. It has abundant, grainy tannins, bursts of mouthwatering acidity and a very long, layered finish. Offer it another 2-3 years in bottle to unwind.

94 points, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate (Jun 2023)

Taking on more richness both visually and aromatically, the 2021 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley is generous with violets, black cherry, and cola spices. Medium to full-bodied, it has ripe, sweet tannins, with notes of black tea, expansive black raspberry fruit, and toasted cedar. It offers good richness and has a classic feel with a long finish. Drink 2024-2034.

94 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Jul 2023)
