Ever since these wines began to hit the market, they've delivered on the early praise that was heaped on them by critics across the board. There's obviously no shortage of spectacular buys in this vintage, but that breadth of choice can often make selection daunting, so we've hand-picked some of our absolute favorites get you going in this reference-point campaign.
Massolino shines with a pair of superb offerings in their "super-classic" village bottling and their triple 95-point Albesani single cru. Produttori's 2021 village bottling is once again one of the steals of the vintage. With 95+ points from Wine Advocate, it's a "a classical expression of Nebbiolo that gives us good reason to be excited for the upcoming 2021 Barbaresco Riservas."
Next up, the 2021 Fontanabianca Bordini is a no-brainer, razor-sharp buy for Piedmont collectors looking to maximize their collectible bang for the buck, a "stunning ,,, utterly delicious" offering with glowing accolades from several critics, led by Kerin O'Keefe's 96 points and 95 points from Larner. Finally, don't miss the single-cru sleeper stars from Albino Rocca and Giuseppe Cortese. "This vivid, sculpted Barbaresco is hugely promising," writes Galloni in his 95-point review of Rocca's 2021 Ronchi. He likewise praises Cortese's 2021 rendition of the iconic Rabaja cru as "complex, dynamic and youthfully austere—in other words, it's classic Rabajà ... a drop-dead gorgeous beauty."

Showing intensity and elegance, the stunning 2021 Fontanabianca Bordini opens with heady aromas of ripe red berry, mocha, violet and a balsamic whiff of camphor. It’s utterly delicious, with flavors of raspberry compote, red cherry, star anise and cake spice that dance across the palate alongside taut, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it beautifully balanced and vibrant while a saline note lingers on the finish.

The Fontanabianca 2021 Barbaresco Bordini, in the bottle with the black label, represents a step up in terms of focus and power over the village bottling. This wine is extremely direct and linear with red and purple fruits, crushed stone and herbs. Nebbiolo grapes come from 60-year-old vineyards. This is another historic family parcel near the Tanaro River on clay limestone soils with prominent veins of sand. This location means slightly warmer temperatures and more humidity in certain vintages. Otherwise, the quality of the soils contributes to the finesse and elegance of this wine. Production is 10,000 bottles.

The 2021 Barbaresco Bordini displays a medium ruby color with a touch more pigment and is spiced with aromas of red cherries, a delicate touch of licorice, roses, and crushed stones. It takes on a nice amount of tension on the palate, with medium body, ripe tannins, and balanced acidity. While it’s going to benefit from year or two in bottle, it’s appealing now and is going to drink at its best over the next 10-12 years.
