B-21 Top Recommendation Read More
Reflecting its well-earned reputation as “the Baby Beaucastel,” the rich and aromatic 92 pt. 2021 Coudoulet de Beaucastel is another terrific vintage from one of Chateauneuf du Pape’s top producers, a solidly built, age worthy Cotes du Rhone revealing fresh dark concentrated fruit scented with wild herbs and peppery spice with a luscious, smooth texture and plush, velvety tannins, a “remarkably consistent wine” according to the Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski that’s “always a solid value” and unbeatably priced for Southern Rhone fans to stock up and enjoy often over the next decade.
Considered “an institution in Chateauneuf du Pape” according to famed Rhone enologist Phillipe Cambie, the Perrin family is well known for its benchmark Chateau de Beaucastel wines, a meticulously crafted CDP declared “the most prominent representative” of the region's famed appellation by the Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth. Described as “a year-in, year-out winner” by Jeb Dunnuck, the Perrin’s produced their first vintage of the Coudoulet Cotes du Rhone in 1989, applying their incredible talent for blending and utilizing fruit from an exceptional terroir, a 30 hectare biodynamically farmed parcel literally steps from the Chateauneuf boundary that shares its unique soil covered with galets roules and planted with vines averaging over 80 years of age. Composed of 30% each Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah plus 10% Cinsault vinified separately before blending, the fresh and enticing 2021 Coudoulet aged for six months in large oak foudres before bottling, yielding an impeccably balanced CDR boasting earthy dark fruit redolent of classic Southern Rhone garrigue, described as already "delicious and satisfying” by James Suckling and robustly structured to deliver a decade of pleasurable drinking ahead.
Declared “a reference point estate in the Rhone Valley, as well as the entire wine world” by Jeb Dunnuck, the silky and vibrant 92 pt. 2021 Coudoulet de Beaucastel is a value priced "cellar treasure" according to the Wine Spectator’s Molesworth, delivering the rich complexity of many Chateauneuf du Pape at a fraction of the price and a delicious cellar worthy CDR that reigns as one of the Southern Rhone’s top values. |

A terrific vintage for this wine, which was bottled just a couple of weeks prior to my late June visit, the 2021 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel is a blend of 30% each Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus 10% Cinsault. From a vineyard just outside the boundaries of the appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, it's a remarkably consistent wine and always a solid value. Scents of sunbaked stones, black cherries and licorice appear on the nose, joined by hints of purple raspberries and dark chocolate, while the medium to full-bodied palate is lush and velvety, finishing long and complex.
92 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Oct 2023)
Very attractive red cherry fruit fills out the medium-bodied palate where the fine tannins underline this very well. Impressive length with plenty of licorice and a touch of candied citrus at the long, crisp and emphatically dry finish. A cuvee based on grenache and mourvedre. From organically grown grapes. Drink from release.

Bottled at the beginning of July, the 2021 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet De Beaucastel shows the fresher, focused style of the vintage yet brings beautiful fruit. Red, blue, and black fruits, peppery herbs, and underbrush notes define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with ripe, polished tannins and a great finish.
90 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2023)
