We hold these truths to be self-evident: Sauvignon Blanc is king of New Zealand and New Zealand is king of Sauvignon Blanc. I've heard that many times over the past decade, so when I read Wine Advocate's recent multi-part article covering hundreds of New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs – wherein they claimed that Sauvignon Blanc accounts for more than 80% of New Zealand's exports by volume – I wasn't surprised. What does surprise me, though, is how many of those "proud" producers are exporting wines that are so hurried. Wines which lack focus, no vigor, nothing to identify them as classically New Zealand. Well, that's certainly not an issue for Greywacke, where Kevin Judd has taken all the knowledge he imparted at his first startup – a little winery known as Cloudy Bay – and combined it with vineyard partners in the finest sub-districts within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys. The wines are exactly as you'd expect; Sauvignon Blancs which demand your attention. Unquestionably the darlings of Wine Advocate and others – especially me – you do not want to miss 'em.
