The family Moccagatta purchased the ancient estate of Villa Sparina near the town of Gavi in the 1970s where one thousand years prior the Bishop of Genova granted the first lease for the growing of the now famous Cortese grape. Indeed, the aristocracy yearned for a prestigious Blanc to pair with their Mediterranean cuisine. The Gavi region lies in the southeast corner of Piedmont, a two hour drive south from Barolo, with the Ligurian Sea only 30 miles further south. Moist northern sea breezes are blocked by the Apennine range so the region is remarkably dry with the winter snows providing the moisture soaked up by clay soils full of ancient marine floor fossil deposits. Villa Sparina's vineyards stretch across 200 acres in the northern section of the Gavi appellation where those clay marl soils alternate with diluvial and gravelly soils which is ideal for the production of richly flavored white wines with immense aging potential. At Villa Sparina the Gavi has a richness, fleshiness that makes it as unique as its bottle, the likeness of which was discovered in the cellars of the farm from a century ago. The previous vintage a "Top 100" led to an early release of the more inspired 2019.

A creamy and fruity white with sliced apples and pears, as well as some flint, parsley and fennel undertones. Medium-bodied, fresh and satisfying. Drink now.
