Crafted from across the estate vineyards of Petrolo's iconic flagship wines, the elegant 95 pt. 2019 Petrolo Torrione boasts aromatic rich, red fruit hinting of earthy spice with mouthwatering acidity on a fresh, intriguing finish, a lush Sangiovese-dominated blend from the talented winemaker of the Super Tuscan Galatrona that’s bargain priced for lovers of Tuscan reds to enjoy without hesitation.

Nestled in the rolling Tuscan hills halfway between Firenze and Arezzo, Fattoria di Petrolo is located on the border of the Chianti Classico zone in the lesser known Valdarno di Sopra region, centered around a medieval watchtower or “torrione” in Italian and surrounded by lush, verdant forests and shimmering olive trees. Counted among Italy’s most talented young artists, Petrolo’s owner and winemaker Luca Sanjust left his painting career in the 1980’s to run his family’s 300-hectare estate near the historic town of Montevarchi, restoring its 31 hectares of hillside vineyards while implementing organic viticulture and becoming “one of the leading estates in Tuscany” according to Vinous critic Antonio Galloni. A richly concentrated blend consisting of 80% Sangiovese with 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 Torrione includes Merlot from the famed Galatrona parcel and Sangiovese from the estate’s oldest vines in the Boggina vineyard, aged in a mix of various sized French oak barrels and large concrete tanks for 15 to 18 months to reveal fine grained tannins framed by bright acidity in a style that emphasizes “finesse over power,” according to critic Galloni and structured for a decade of evolution in the cellar.

Produced in an excellent vintage described as “a watershed year for vino Italiano” by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, the enticing 95 pt. 2019 Petrolo Torrione is a delicious introduction to the talented Luca Sanjust and Petrolo’s elegant signature style, boasting rich Sangiovese character that lovers of Chianti Classico and refined Tuscan blends seeking an outstanding value will reach for again and again.

Very perfumed with sweet-berry and fresh-flower aromas that already show brightness and beauty. Perfumed. Full-bodied with very well-integrated tannins and pure, vivid fruit at the finish. This is all in finesse and depth. Drinkable now, but better in a couple of years.

The Petrolo 2019 Torrione is Sangiovese with with smaller parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This is a terrific wine with an exciting delivery of fresh and bold fruit that recalls pressed cherry and wild plum. One of the main features of the 2019 vintage is that standout concentration. The wine delivers good texture and richness, yet the intensity is well played and contained. A lingering note of sweetness that I also notice on Petrolo's other 2019 releases is present here.
