Described as “a superb winemaker” by Neal Martin of Vinous, these highly rated 1er Cru selections from Burgundy superstar Nicolas Rossignol are crafted with exceptional balance and elegant complexity from some of the top terroirs in the Cote de Beaune, ranking among the top values in age worthy Burgundy to enjoy over the next decades.

Driven by “energy and passion” according to Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, fifth generation Nicolas Rossignol returned to his family’s Burgundy estate and established his own domain in 1997 with three hectares of inherited vines, eventually merging his vineyards with his family’s holdings and producing Burgundies on over 17 hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards spanning 30 appellations south of Beaune. Focusing on the individual character of each plot and the vintage, Nico vinifies each unique terroir separately with extreme attention to detail, fermenting with indigenous yeasts, and aging the red wines in new wood barrels ranging from 0% up to 50% for between 10 and 20 months on the lees before bottling without fining or filtration. From an outstanding vintage he calls “a modern classic,” Neal Martin of Vinous describes the 93 pt. 2017 Domaine Nicolas Rossignol Clos de Verger 1er Cru Pommard as “very harmonious” with “fine acidity,” while the 94 pt. 2017 Domaine Nicolas Rossignol Les Fremiets 1er Cru Volnay is “very expressive of its terroir” and summed up as “superb.” Crafted from a vintage that “hits the bullseye” according to critic James Suckling, the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley calls the 93 pt. 2019 Clos des Angles 1er Cru Volnay and the 93 pt. 2019 Mitans 1er Cru Volnay “dramatic and elegantly muscular, with ripe fruit tones, powdery tannins and succulent acids” while the 93 pt. 2019 Ronceret 1er Cru Volnay is a “fleshy wine” with “a charmingly sensual attack.” Showing “youthfully chalky tannins,” the 94 pt. 2019 Les Argillieres 1er Cru Pommard “is a fine proposition for the cellar” according to critic Kelley, and the 95 pt. 2019 Cailleret 1er Cru Volnay is “velvety and charming, with melting tannins and an ample core of fruit,” while the 94 pt. 2020 Domaine Nicolas Rossignol Fourneaux 1er Cru showcases Nico’s talent for crafting a rich and muscular expression of Pinot Noir from the less heralded Savigny-les-Beaune, its silky, fine tannins poised to age effortlessly.

Counted among “the Côte de Beaune's most serious producers” according to the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, these elegant Domaine Nicolas Rossignol 1er Cru’s offer the appealing combination of quality and value rarely seen in age worthy Red Burgundy from one of the region’s most talented winemakers, a terrific opportunity for Burgundy lovers and collectors to choose a few favorites or mix a case and savor them from the cellar for years to come.

From a clay-rich site at the bottom of the climat, Rossignol's 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Mitans—only the second rendition of this new cuvée—mingles aromas of petals, berries, plums and spices in an inviting bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, supple and gourmand, with a fleshy core of fruit, powdery tannins and a generous, gourmand profile, it's showing well.

91-93 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)
