Approaching the vineyards surrounding Château Pape Clément near the city of Bordeaux, you can't help but notice the remarkable intersection of both old and new - while a team of Gascon oxen might be seen plowing the vineyards, a solar powered drone can be spotted overhead monitoring the ripeness of each plot. Known to be one of the oldest Bordeaux Grand Crus whose first harvest dates back to the 13th century, the modern era of Château Pape Clément began in 1980 when wine merchant and entrepreneur Bernard Magrez acquired the estate. Under Magrez's direction and with famed oenologist Michel Rolland overseeing every aspect from viticulture to winemaking, the wines of Pape Clément have never been better, consistently garnering 90 plus point ratings over the last decade. Year over year, the exceptional Château Pape Clément, and its outstanding second label Clémentin exhibit a pattern of quality and consistency, shining especially bright in recent top vintages in the Pessac-Léognan.

Located in the heart of Graves on the Left Bank, the vineyards of Château Pape Clément share the AOC's characteristic terroir with its closest neighbor Chateau Haut Brion, including its unique and varied micro-climates and a blend of rich gravel, clay and limestone soil with the average age of its vines about 30 years old. A blend of nearly equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, Château Pape Clément is intensely aromatic, a lustrous wine with complex notes of rich, ripe dark red fruit and a nuance of smoke and spice, with the complexity and tannic structure to evolve for years to come. The Clémentin de Pape Clement exhibits layers of bright, fresh dark red fruit in an earthy, approachable style, a full-bodied blend that mirrors the Pape Clement in quality and value.

Critic Robert Parker calls Bernard Magrez "one of Bordeaux's most interesting visionaries" who has "built an empire based on high quality." With few estates matching this quality outside of First Growth Chateaux, these elegant wines of Château Pape Clément, selected from the top vintages of the last decade, will exceed your expectations today and for years to come, representing one of the greatest values in Left Bank Bordeaux.

As to the Grand Vin 2019 Château Pape Clement, it reveals a dense purple hue to go with stunning aromatics of crème de cassis, graphite, lead pencils shavings, scorched earth, and tobacco. Beautifully balanced, with flawless tannins, this full-bodied Pessac has that rare mix of elegance and power, a great mid-palate, and again, perfect balance. It's one of the gems of the vintage and has some accessibility today given its purity and balance, yet deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will cruise for 20-25 years or more in cold cellars. The blend is equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, brought up in two-thirds new French oak.

The 2019 Pape Clément is just as impressive as it was en primeur. It shows all of the textural richness that is so typical of Bernard Magrez's wines, but with an extra kick of freshness that provides energy as well as a sense of proportion. A wine of stature, the 2019 is so classy. Succulent black cherry, plum, mocha, new leather and licorice are all beautifully delineated. But more than anything else, I find the wine's energy really impressive. This is a fabulous vintage for Pape Clément. Tasted two times.

Crushed-stone and berry aromas with some blackberry and black-tea character. Just a touch of smokiness. Sweet fruit, too. This is so refined, subtle, and beautiful for Pape with full body, ultra-fine tannins and a succulent finish. The center-palate is dense and complete. Goes on for minutes. So subtle and refined, focused and classy. Try after 2026.

Raspberry puree, concentrated loganberry and black cherry alongside peony and rosebud flowers, still extremely concentrated with knitted-together tannins. Great quality and potential, a little more severe and austere than the 2018 at this point, needs a good five years in bottle. Harvest September 17 to Ocotber 10, A (one point) upscore from En Primeur.

Made up of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, the 2019 Pape Clement is medium to deep garnet-purple colored. It needs coaxing to unlock cassis, plum preserves, and licorice notes with hints of tar, wild sage, and tobacco. The medium-bodied palate is elegant and lively with soft, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral-laced.
