“An incredibly classic, elegant Saint-Emilion”

Jeb Dunnuck

Reflecting its exceptional terroir on St. Emilion's limestone plateau, the lush and powerful 96 pt. 2019 Chateau Beau Sejour Becot offers layers of pure aromatic dark fruit boasting chalky minerality and vibrant acidity with an elegant, uplifted finish, described as “one of the best wines this estate has produced in the modern era” by the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley at a superb value price for Bordeaux lovers and collectors seeking a Right Bank bargain to pull from the cellar without hesitation.

Tucked away just behind its neighbour Clos Fourtet within walking distance to the historic St. Emilion village, the massive underground cellars under Chateau Beau Sejour Becot were carved from one-time limestone quarries with a labyrinth of tunnels that connect to nearby Chateau Canon, the walls extending from floor to ceiling revealing the incredible depth of pure limestone just under the topsoil that’s unique to the St. Emilion plateau. Renowned for their 1990 vintage that scored 100 pts. from Robert Parker, Chateau Beau Sejour Becot underwent a modern renaissance beginning in 2009 under the direction of famed consultants Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt, implementing vast improvements in the vineyard including replanting at higher densities, reducing yields and harvesting at optimal ripeness as well as modernizing the winemaking with parcel by parcel vinification. Planted mainly to Merlot averaging 45 years of age and ranging up to 75 years with Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, the organically farmed 20 hectares of vines are planted at the peak of the St. Emilion plateau at around 70 meters above sea level and down the sloping hillside to 45 meters of elevation in a mix of chalky clay and limestone over a deep bed of limestone, an impressive 12 hectares located in a single block on the yield-limiting Saint-Martin de Mazerat limestone plateau. Employing strict selection of the hand harvested grapes before quickly moving them to the gravity fed winery to preserve freshness, the elegant 2019 Chateau Beau Sejours Becot was aged in 65% new French oak with the remainder in a mix of foudres, amphora and once-used barrels for 18 months under the direction of consultant Thomas Duclos, yielding a rich core of dark, concentrated fruit with chalky minerality and “very fine-grained tannins and a mineral lift on the finish” according to the Wine Independent’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown, promising a long-lived evolution over the next few decades.

Recently sold to the Courtin-Clarins family of the Clarins Cosmetics company for an astounding 75 million euros, the enticing 96 pt. 2019 Chateau Beau Sejour Becot reflects the estate’s steady rise in quality over the last decade while delivering outstanding value, a top-scoring St. Emilion from the outstanding 2019 vintage raising the bar to compete with Chateaux Canon and Figeac at a fraction of the price and a worthy choice for stocking the cellar.

The 2019 Beau-Séjour-Bécot is a powerful, explosive wine. Dark fruit, chocolate, cured meats and earthy notes lend quite a bit of depth. Compared with its neighbors, Beau-Séjour-Bécot is dark, broad and broodingly tannic, sometimes more power than finesse. There is plenty of character, though. That much is evident. Beau-Séjour-Bécot speaks with authority as it commands attention.

Plums, currants, pine cones, mushrooms and bark on the nose. Some licorice, too. It’s medium-bodied with tightly knit tannins. Tight and fresh with fantastic tension and drive. Refined and focused. Spicy and lightly salty at the end. Try in 2026.

96 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

This delivers a tumble of ripe raspberry, plum and boysenberry fruit flavors, lined with violet, red tea and sweet tobacco notes that add lift and range. The long, racy, chalk-lined finish leaves a pure feel that's not easy to achieve in this vintage. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2024 through 2038. 7,700 cases made, 3,080 cases imported.

The 2019 Beau-Séjour Bécot has turned out nicely, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, wild berries, raw cocoa, spices and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's deep and layered, with a rich mid-palate that's underpinned by succulent acids and powdery tannins. Located opposite Château Canon on Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau, there's some significant restructuring going on in the vineyards here, and in the cellar, foudres, amphorae and once-used barrels complement new oak: the result is the best wines this estate has produced in the modern era.

94+ points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

This is properly dense, in keeping with the vintage, with fine tannins and rich black fruits. It balances well, juicy acidity combining with a firm and dry structure. The wine is fine, firm and sure to develop well. Drink from 2026.
