While the history of winemaking in Chablis dates back for centuries, it has only been since the end of World War II that winemakers in the region have steadily elevated the quality of Chablis produced, employing technological advances to manage the effects of its cool northern climate while emphasizing the influence of its unique soils. For nearly 50 years, Jean Marc Brocard has been at the forefront of this movement, remaining true to the traditions and soil of Chablis in creating wines that highlight their nuances and complexity.

Southwest of the central village on the Route de Chablis lies Prehy, where Jean Marc established his first vineyard in 1973 with land given to him as a wedding gift by his new father-in-law, vigneron Emile Petit. But Brocard credits another vigneron Louis Petit as his mentor, establishing the foundations of his respect for the vines and inspiring his appreciation of the soil. Throughout the next 25 years, he built his reputation from the bottom up, purchasing vineyard holdings in the area along with fellow producers including Michel Laroche and William Fevre. Now with over 200 hectares, most of Brocard’s vines are over 30 yrs. old and include some dating over 70 yrs. (making the outstanding 2019 St. Claire Vielles Vignes an exceptional value). The estate produces over 30 unique single vineyard Chablis with each parcel harvested and fermented separately. Brocard was first in Chablis to convert vineyard management to organic and eventually biodynamic viticulture under the direction of his son, Julien.

Cuvée and single vineyard wines are made to preserve the qualities of grapes grown in the area’s famous Kimmeridgian soils, a fossil-rich calcareous clay that imparts minerality and often a note of salinity. Just as in the vineyard, Brocard and winemaker Odile Van Der Moere also take a minimalist approach in the cellar, fermenting with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks or neutral barrels, with further aging on the lees.

Ever optimistic about the future of Chablis, Jean Marc Brocard believes his wines will continue to improve with stewardship of the vineyards leading the way. Each of these 90 plus rated Vielle Vignes, Premier Cru and Grand Cru Chablis being proof positive that Jean Marc Brocard continues not only to produce some of the top wines in Chablis, but some of the world’s top white wine values too.

A lifted but guarded sense of lemon zest plays on this wine's nose, forthright at one moment, restrained the next. The palate channels concentrated but creamy lemon peel, mouthwatering in its frankness but buffered by lovely chalkiness. Lemony limestone freshness rings long after the last sip.

The 2019 Chablis Vau de Vey 1er Cru has an intriguing, melted candle wax and white flower nose, showing touches of apple peel and chalk dust. This seems to grow in complexity in the glass. The palate is well balanced and spicy, with a fine bead of acidity. Orange peel and touches of bitter lemon give way to a slightly oily-textured finish. This is a very engaging Vau de Vey that will be fascinating to see mature in bottle.
