Described as “another terrific vintage chez Bouchard” by the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, the elegant 92 pt. 2019 Bouchard Pere & Fils Beaune 1er Cru du Chateau offers fresh, aromatic ripe red fruit with nuances of earthy spice and velvety, supple tannins, crafted from 17 exceptional 1er Cru vineyards in an outstanding 2019 vintage that “hits the bullseye” according to critic James Suckling and a top value Red Burgundy boasting a decade or more of longevity.

Founded in 1731, the historic cellars of Bouchard Pere & Fils lie beneath the 15th century Chateau de Beaune built by King Louis XI and purchased in 1820 by family member Bernard Bouchard, housing over a million bottles including a rare collection of pre-phylloxera wine behind seven-meter-thick walls. Produced at Bouchard since 1907, the Beaune 1er Cru du Chateau is sourced from 26 hectares of organically farmed estate vineyards in an array of 1er Crus from Savigny-les-Beaune to its border with Pommard planted in a mix of pebble and marl limestone soils, the prime terroir considered worthy of bottling as stand-alone cuvees. Fermenting the parcels separately before aging for 14 months in around 30% new French oak, Bouchard's renowned long-time cellar master Frederic Weber “has once again excelled himself in 2019” according to the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, calling the vibrant and intensely colored 2019 Bouchard Pere & Fils Beaune 1er Cru Du Chateau “an elegant wine that gets my nod as the finest Beaune du Chateau for some time."

Described by Neal Martin of Vinous as “the most underrated commune in the Cote d’Or,” the exquisite 92 pt. 2019 Bouchard Pere & Fils Beaune 1er Cru Du Chateau offers the lush complexity of 1er Cru Burgundy terroir at a fraction of the region’s higher profile appellations, a delicious and “remarkably accessible bottling” according to the Wine Advocate’s Kelley that’s value priced for Red Burgundy lovers and collectors to reach for without hesitation over the next decade and beyond.

An excellent introduction to the red wines of Beaune, this has full red-fruit and earthy character with hints of spicy oak and licorice. A crowd-pleasing balance of generosity and moderately dry tannins on the palate with good length. Should age well. Drink or hold.

92 points, James Suckling (Aug 2021)

This red offers a mix of fruit and savory elements, with cherry and plum flavors mingling with earth, sandalwood and vegetal notes. Broad, with a well-integrated structure, fresh acidity and a mineral essence lingering on the aftertaste. Best from 2026 through 2042. 1,500 cases imported.

91 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Mar 2023)

A blend of 17 Beaune Premier Crus which has been exclusively produced at Bouchard since 1907. Bouchard owns 26ha, largely on pebbly/marly limestone. 12-14 months in oak with 25-35% new. Fred Weber stressed how healthy the grapes were in 2019. Vibrant redcurrant/raspberry fruit, an abundance of elegance here despite fruit ripeness and alcohol weighing in at 14.5%. Concentrated, supple and fine tannins, restrained, almost unnoticeable, oak. Weber likens the 2019 vintage to 1949.

91 points, Andy Howard, Decanter (Nov 2022)
