Kym Tolley is about as Coonawarra has they come. His Penley Estate label proudly carries the Phoenix name in honor of his great-grandfather's first winery in the region. Douglas Austral Tolley bought the old Phoenix Winemaking and Distilling Company (which began operations in 1858 in Stepney, South Australia) in 1888, renaming it Tolley Scott Tolley. When Kym launched the Penley Estate, he reestablished a family winemaking legacy of several generations. In addition to the Phoenix / Tolley legacy, Kym is a direct descendant of Penfolds' founder Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold (Kym's great-great-great-grandfather) on his mother's side. Grange creator Max Schubert was Kym's first boss, tutoring Tolley through several vintages of Grange. So when Kym elected his corporate moniker, he chose an amalgam of the family names: PEN (from Penfolds) and LEY (from Tolley). Kym will proudly tell you that red wine is in his blood, especially Coonawarra red wine. His Penley Estate vineyard – an impressive 275 acres under vine – are planted to a limestone base which is covered by the famous terra rossa soil of the Coonawarra. His microclimate couldn't be better. Penley's Tolmer is a modern expression of Coonawarra Cabernet with intense blackcurrant and savory French oak notes. A generous core of juicy fruits and chalky tannins – kirsch, cassis and chocolate covered espresso bean. Great length and persistence in the finish.

The female clad label on this wine is both elegant and fierce, a reflection of the rock star team of women responsible for the liquid inside. This wine walks a deft line between power and restraint, layering flavors of plush dark berries with graphite, mint, bay leaf, black olive and earthy spice. The palate is linear and tightly knit with chalky tannins that lend length and complexity. Drink now–2040.

Open-fermented, some components held on skins for extended maceration for up to 30 days, matured in French oak (35% new) for 12 months. A particularly pleasing Coonawarra cabernet from a very good vintage. The balance of fruit, oak and tannins is right on the money, with cassis, Coonawarra mulberry and cedar.

Dense and toothsome, with sink-your-teeth-into-them tannins that add a wonderful richness and density to the generous flavors of dark chocolate–covered coffee bean, kirsch, sage and cassis. The harmony keeps building on the finish. Drink now through 2035. 200 cases imported.

Lots of subtle spearmint and blackcurrant aromas follow through to a medium body, integrated and fine tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink now. Screw cap.
