Smooth and enveloping, this opens with delicate scents of blue flower, pipe tobacco, camphor and new leather. It's full-bodied and savory, with flavors of raspberry jam, licorice and crushed mint set against a backbone of fine-grained tannins. While it's concentrated, it also has a weightless finesse. Drink 2023–2033.

Made with fruit from Rocche di Castiglione, Cannubi and Bric dël Fiasc, the Paolo Scavino 2018 Barolo Carobric needs a few moments to open before the aromas come into full view. Sweet cherry, earth, licorice and rusty nail rise from the top, and on second nose, you might recognize truffle essence as well. I like the vibrant, lifted character of this wine. This is a 5,800-bottle production.

The 2018 Paolo Scavino Barolo Carobric is a blend of fruit from three different vineyards, Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione and Bric del Fiasc. This 2018 is immediate and open on the nose with a combination of spice, green herbs and flowers. It has a lovely focus and drive on the palate with savory, silty textured tannins giving it an edge. There is an energetic quality to this wine. Wait one to two years and keep for up to 25.

The 2018 Barolo Carobric shows terrific energy and focus, naturally in the smaller-scaled style of the year. There’s terrific precision driving the bright red cherry, spice, mint, pipe tobacco and floral nuances. In 2018, the Carobric is a bit nervy, but the aromatics and balance wrap everything together nicely.

A little reticent on the nose for now, showing only some oak-induced dry spice. But it opens up on the palate to reveal a bright, focused core of fresh red berries and firm, fine-grained tannins. Well structured for a 2018, but lacks the inner depth and warmth of happier vintages. Try from 2024.
