"The 2016 Château Lascombes is another brilliant Margaux, and I was blown away by this wine... while I’d happily enjoy bottles today, it’s going to keep for 25-30 years."
–Jeb Dunnuck

Crafted by the renowned Second Growth estate in an excellent vintage, the opulent 95pt 2016 Chateau Lascombes offers lush dark fruit with hints of smoky graphite and structured, ripe tannins, described as "really stunning" by critic James Suckling and offering incomparable value, conveyed ex-Chateau.

Established in the center of the Margaux plateau, the stately ivy-covered 19th century Chateau Lascombes was brought back to its original grandeur in the 1950s under the direction of renowned wine writer and entrepreneur Alexis Lichine, who raised the quality of the estate's wine exponentially over his two decades of ownership. Planted to 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon with 5% Petit Verdot, Lascombes' 120 hectares of vineyards are the largest holding in the Margaux AOC, divided into three distinct blocks based on their diverse soils of clay, gravel and limestone. Formerly the technical manager of Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Duhart-Milon and Château l'Evangile before taking the reins at Lascombes in 2001, winemaker Dominique Befve presided over the most recent modernization of the estate, remapping and restructuring the vineyards, constructing new cellars and employing stricter selection for the Grand Vin under the advisement of renowned winemaking consultant Michel Rolland. Aged in 80% new French oak barrels for 18 months, the full-bodied 95pt 2016 Chateau Lascombes boasts layers of luscious dark fruit, minerality and impressive length with "a terrific sense of elegance and purity" according to critic Jeb Dunnuck, already incredibly drinkable.

Offered at a fraction of the price of nearby Chateaux Margaux and Palmer from an outstanding vintage, the 2016 Chateau Lascombes strikes the balance between richness and elegance, giving "full rein to the classy image of Margaux as the center of delicacy and precision in the Médoc" according to Bordeaux expert Jane Anson, conveyed in pristine provenance in cellar-ready original wooden cases and promising years of enjoyment.

Complex nose, blending notes of elderberries, black cherries, spices, cedar, and violets. It’s full-bodied and structured with elegant tannins and a fleshy texture. Flavorful, savory finish. Try after 2024.

The 2018 Château Lascombes performed brilliantly in my tastings. It's a rich, medium to full-bodied, impressively textured Margaux with loads to love. Lots of jammy currants, blueberries, vanilla bean, flowers, and camphor emerge from the glass, and it has ripe yet present tannins, no hard edges, and just a balanced, classy style. It needs 3-4 years to integrate its oak and will keep for 25 years or more. The blend is 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot that was brought up in 60% new French oak.

This large estate to the north of Margaux village is performing well. There is still a tendency to overuse wood aging, but powerful black fruits will provide balance as the wine ages. With its structure and dark tannins, this wine has a long-term perspective. Drink from 2027.

The 2018 Lascombes is deep garnet-purple in color, slowly unfurling in the glass to reveal evocative cassis, black cherries and blackberry pie scents, followed by hints of pencil lead, menthol, lavender and cedar chest with a touch of damp soil. The medium to full-bodied palate gives a great core of muscular black fruits, framed by firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and savory.

93+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Lascombes is plush and racy in the glass. Soft contours enmeshed with silky tannins give this juicy Margaux so much immediacy. Inky dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, chocolate and new oak abound. This is an especially flamboyant, forward style, but it all works quite well. Best of all, the 2018 will drink well with just a few years in bottle.

A bright juniper note leads off, followed quickly by a mix of warmed cassis, steeped plum and blackberry compote flavors. Silky and fine-grained in feel from start to finish, with a late flurry of singed wood, savory and dark tea details on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2023 through 2036. 29,000 cases made.
