Smoky and intense, the 2017 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Vigneto di Popoli smolders up with an array of rose, ash, stone dust and dried black cherry aromas. This is a brooding effort, with silky textures offset by a core of tart wild berry fruit and mineral tones. A bump of residual acidity adds balance as the 2017 finishes with dramatic length and chewy concentration. The Vigneto di Popoli is made from 55-year-old vines that have since been replanted. It's a beautiful beast in need of taming.

Violets, wet earth and black fruit on the nose, followed by a juicy, medium-bodied palate. Attractive earth and black-tea undertones to the fruit, framed by well-integrated tannins. Drink or hold.
