Superb bottlings from the '50s and '60s tasted over the last few decades affirm the terroir at Thalabert to be special in Crozes-Hermitage. Wisely, this was the first vineyard purchased by Paul Jaboulet back in 1834. As large and varied as the Crozes-Hermitage appellation is, it is this rolling area in southern Crozes where the soils are just a few feet of Alpine alluvial stone laying atop fifty feet of gravel stone bed known as the French drain, that define the unique terroir of Thalabert. The 60-80+ years old vines are bio-dynamically farmed and enjoy the heat retention of the stone covered vineyard, retaining the heat of the day into the night to advance maturity into the night, most similar to parts of Chateauneuf du Pape vineyards also covered in "galets."

Caroline Frey – managing director of Frey Family Wineries: Chateau La Lagune (where she's been winemaker for more than a decade; skyrocketing results ensuing), Jaboulet Aine & its wildly famous Hermitage La Chapelle and Thalabert (acquired in 2006), along with a substantial stake in Billecart Salmon, has vowed to maintain and further elevate Thalabert among the great wines of the northern Rhone. The 2017 Thalabert is proof.

From a scorcher of a vintage that had tiny yields, the 2017 Crozes Hermitage Domaine De Thalabert offers a deep purple color as well as a classic Thalabert bouquet of black fruits, black olive, iodine, and peppery herbs. It’s a rich, rounded, sumptuous beauty that has plenty of sweet fruit, moderate tannins, and a great finish. It’s not going to match the 2015, but it’s a rocking wine I’d be thrilled to drink.

94-96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2018)

Youthful purple color. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe blackcurrant, blueberry, violet and olive and a smoky bacon nuance builds in the glass. Sweet and broad in the mouth, offering concentrated, mineral-tinged dark fruit liqueur, floral pastille and candied licorice flavors and a strong hint of spicecake. Chewy tannins build steadily on an impressively long, broad finish that leaves blue fruit preserve and exotic spice notes behind.
