The Le Casematte 2017 Faro opens to a rich and beautiful appearance. The wine shows medium extraction and a mid-weight approach, but this vintage is especially dark ruby in color. The bouquet presents wild rose, tilled earth, savory spice, black olive and a sweet touch of candied orange peel. This wine is elegant and bright, and you just can't beat that distinctive personality that you get with the handful of producers who make wines over the sparkling lights of the Straits of Messina. This Faro blend is 55% Nerello Mascalese, 25% Nerello Cappuccio, 10% Nocera and 10% Nero d'Avola, all aged in oak for 18 months. Some 8,000 bottles were made.

This herbal, savory red from Sicily’s northeastern tip shows flavors of dark berries and dried plums accented by notes of orange zest and wild herbs. About three-quarters of the blend is nerello mascalese and nerello cappuccio, the predominant varieties of Mt. Etna, Faro’s neighbor to the southeast, with the balance coming from nocera and nero d’Avola. The tannins are ripe and subtle, the structure coming more from the wine’s dark mineral texture.

A dense, layered red with lots of rich, layered fruit and ripe tannins. Wet-earth and dark-berry flavors with some pumice. Medium to full body. Flavorful finish. Drink after 2020.

Luminous deep red. Enticing aromas of ripe red cherry, Oriental spices, medicinal herbs and licorice. Then rich and round but very light on its feet thanks to harmonious acidity nicely extending the red fruit and spice flavors on the long and very pure finish. Though there is no shortage of tannic spine here, the overall impression is one of seamlessness. Very well done.
