Several visits over the past few years to this address in Puligny-Montachet where the domaine has existed since 1632, affirms the estate’s trajectory. Much has occurred at Carillon in the last dacade. In 2009 brothers Francois who tended the vineyards and Jacques the winemaker split the domaine each pursuing their own work in separate cellars. Francois retained the historic address, where significant work has occurred reconfiguring space, renovation and cellar work. The work is finished short of some renovation to façade and office space facing the church. 2017 is the first vintage to have been raised in the renewed facility and cellars and it is most evident in all the wines. This is what I’ve been waiting for – the debut – the defining style of Francois Carillon – which I would summarize – aromatic purity and terroir expression, texturally sublime, elegant, harmonious – all components masterfully balanced. This is true of every wine regardless of price or appellation from the bargain Bourgogne Blancs to the stunning 1er Cru trio offered. Cellar tasted June 2019.

Carillon had racked his 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Village into three tanks before bottling, and all three were both promising and complementary, displaying notes of citrus pith, white flowers, fresh peach and crisp green apple. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and tangy, with an appealing alliance of tension and volume. An excellent Puligny in the making.
