Giacomo Rallo and his wife, Gabriella – the "Fleeing Woman" and her flowing locks their logo – launched Donnafugata in 1983; today, they are the leading family of Sicilian wine. Accolades are numerous, Antonio Galloni reporting, "There are few better estates in Italy than this one owned by Giacomo and Gabriella Rallo... [thanks in part to] the marvelous work done on the island of Pantelleria, where the Rallo family has invested huge sums of money..." Recent tastings of multiple vintages assert their dominance, especially with Zibibbo, a varietal they produce without competition. Their 2016 Lighea will hit very high on your pleasure meter; fruity, lively and the perfect brunch wine. Their flat-out gorgeous 2017 Anthilia is utterly lip-smacking, too; buckets of stone fruits finishing brisk and lively. Then there's the 2017 Sherazade – Nero d'Avola done right – it's a showstopper. Finally, the signature wine: Ben Ryé (Ben "Ree-Ay"); 100% Zibibbo, sun-dried until raisin-like, a liquid nirvana. These will become new favorites, as they are for me. Each a signature wine, as unique as the history of this fascinating estate.
