The return of family to the Beringer cellars – destiny. Mark Beringer is a descendant of Jacob, one of the Beringer Brothers who together founded the winery in 1876. Mark has many generations smiling down on him. Mark's inaugural 2015 Beringer Knights Valley Cabernet became a hit – a Wine Spectator Top 100. The 2016 has already outpaced the 2015. The 2017 Private Reserve Chardonnay is also a breakout for Mark. The warm vintage suited the classic style that Mark wants for the Chardonnay, more balance from earlier harvesting. Certainly great concentration to stand up to 100% new French oak. "Montrachet-like?" Most impressive.

Freshly squeezed nectarines, dried jasmine, orange blossom, vanilla, peach flan, dried mangoes, jack fruit and plenty of bread dough. Full body, a very round and oily mouthfeel, expansive and commanding acidity and a long finish. Drink now or hold.

A different animal, the 2017 Chardonnay Private Reserve is richer and more opulent, with Montrachet-like caramelized lemon, tropical fruits, and brioche aromas and flavors. Nevertheless, it’s still more elegant and vibrant than past vintages, with medium body, a layered texture, and good acidity. I love its balance and it can be drunk any time over the coming 2-4 years, although there’s no need to delay gratification.
