Jose Millan's Mosquita Muerta wine project began in 2010 at his family's Los Toneles winery in Mendoza, sourcing grapes in and around Mendoza's Uco Valley. Winemaker Bernardo Bossi shares Jose's passion for creating exceptional Malbec blends, having been head winemaker for Alma Negra, Tikal and Siesta wines, and eventually Casarena. The wines are all named "tongue in cheek" by Jose, whose family wasn't exactly welcomed into the world of Argentinian wine, having made their fortune in the grocery business. Perro Callejero translates as "Stray Dog," and Sapo de Otro Pozo is "Toad from Another Well," the Argentinian slang for "fish out of water." The name of the project "Mosquita Muerta" is an Argentinian slang expression itself – referring to the idea that while his competitors were mistakenly underestimating Jose's abilities to create world-class wines, they would soon find his wines deserving of top ratings. With 90 plus point ratings for the 2018 Mosquita Muerta Perro Callejero Malbec and the 2016 Mosquita Muerta Sapo de Otro Pozo, it seems the Wine Advocate's Luis Gutiérrez agrees.

The 2016 Sapo de Otro Pozo is a blend of Malbec with 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Syrah from different vineyards in the Valle de Uco, fermented in different vessels. Half of the wine aged in new French barriques. There is a bit more influence from the oak here, combining smoky and spicy aromas with notes of aromatic herbs, wild berries and flowers. It has a round palate with moderate acidity and some more tannins. It might require more time in bottle and/or powerful food. 13,000 bottles were filled in February 2018.
