From the historic Grand Marque Champagne house renowned for producing the iconic Cristal, the elegant 95 pt. 2016 Louis Roederer Brut Rose reveals richly textured, aromatic red fruit hinting of saline freshness and toasty brioche with vibrant acidity rising on a creamy pinpoint mousse, a seriously complex and enticing vintage Rose priced well below Roederer’s prestige cuvee delivering serious bang for the buck for Champagne lovers and collectors to enjoy over the next decade.

Remaining one of the few family-run houses in the region for over two centuries, Louis Roederer inherited the Champagne house that would become known as Champagne Louis Roederer in 1833, considered a visionary in the region as one of the first to recognize the influence of terroir on Champagne. Acquiring the estate’s original 15 hectares in the Verzenay Grand Cru in 1845 to manage how the grapes were grown, Roederer's holdings expanded over the next 150 years to 240 hectares of 1er and Grand Cru vineyards, producing its Champagne exclusively from estate vines and now managed by seventh generation Frederic Rouzaud. Crafted by long-time Roederer Chef de Cave Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon, the 2016 Rose is a blend of 62% Pinot Noir sourced from small plots in Cumieres adding freshness and complexity and 38% Chardonnay planted in the cooler limestone soils of Chouilly known for contributing elegance and minerality. Macerating the Pinot Noir with some Chardonnay juice to integrate the flavors and vinifying 21% in oak, Rouzaud aged the rich and refined 2016 Louis Roederer Brut in bottle for 4 years, adding 8 g dosage after disgorgement and aging it at least six more months in the cellars to yield a Rose of “great finesse and elegance” according to Jeb Dunnuck to savor “over the next 15 or so years,” its long, flavorful finish rising on a steady stream of fine bubbles that draws you back for another sip.

Describing the 95 pt. 2016 Champagne Louis Roederer Brut Rose as “impeccably balanced,” Antonio Galloni of Vinous notes that while Cristal is considered Roederer’s prestige cuvee, “it would be a serious mistake to look past the rest of the range,” the 2016 promising to “drink beautifully right out of the gate” and deliver a decade or more of enjoyment at a fraction of the price.

Fantastic aroma of Mara des Bois strawberries. Very juicy with an explosion of strawberries and ripe nectarines. Stunning vitality due to the bright and fine mousse plus the lively acidity. Long and elegant finish that pulls you back for more. A cuvee of 60% pinot noir from Cumieres and 40% chardonnay from Chouilly. 8 g/l dosage. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Finely mature, this bottling is just right. Its fruit has softened and a touch of toastiness has come through to give great balance. The Champagne is totally ready to drink.

A nose full of rose petals with orange skin and berry fruits, not as expressive as some of the other Champagnes in the masterclass but this has a lovely soft, and delicate aromatic profile. Tangy lemon, raspberry, strawberry and orange on the palate with a sea spray, saline finish that is particularly moreish. Fully flavoured, round and complete with mouthwatering acidity, lots of sapidity and an extremely long finish. A lovely combination of both bitter and sour elements giving such complexity and nuance on the palate.

Firm and focused, this finely knit version offers a satiny texture and hints of smoke and oyster shell, which underscore flavors of pureed raspberry, peach skin and blood orange granita, with a rich touch of toasted brioche. Long, lightly spiced finish. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Drink now through 2030. 2,321 cases imported.

With much of the Pinot Noir coming from a warm microclimate in Cumières and Chardonnay from Chouilly, the Rosé 2016 is an ‘infused’ rose achieving its pale salmon pink hue from a gentle six to eight-day cold soak of the Pinot Noir (62%) before vinifying it together with 38% of Chardonnay in stainless steel, with a 21% portion done in oak barrel. Finished with an eight gram per liter dosage, this 2016 unwinds with perceptible ease to show ripe red berry, pomegranate and kumquat aromas that give way to a medium to full-bodied, plush and lemony palate with shimmering acidity and a faint tannic bitter note on the finish.
