The brand known as "Kaiken" (variant of "Caiquen," the indigenous, highly social birds which flock to this corner of Mendoza), was born in 2002. Its founder, Aurelio Montes Jr., son of Aurelio Montes and Senior Winemaker & Founding Partner of Viña Montes in Chile, had been in Mendoza for one year – long enough to realize fully the potential. This side of the Andes, Aurelio quickly discovered, was overflowing with the perfect combination of terroirs and locals deeply informed on viticulture. Aurelio was hooked; his new venture would combine the exceptional conditions of Mendoza's finest sub-zones with the limitless talents and resources of professionals from Argentina and Chile. And he would utilize these resources to produce a set of world-class wines for the everyday. As I've followed these wines – the top tier known as "Ultra" – I've been more impressed with each subsequent set of releases. Aurelio and his team strike the balance between minerality, terroir and classic fruit intensity. This latest Malbec – earning 94 points and high praise from Suckling – is a must-have for true fans of Argentina's best.
