The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin "Cuvée Coeur de Roy" comes from vines that are 50+ years old, matured in two-thirds new oak with 50% whole-cluster fruit. Now this has a generous and expressive bouquet with billowing scents of black cherry, raspberry, cassis and sous-bois, very well defined and soaking that new oak up so that you barely notice its guiding presence. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a crisp line of acidity lending tautness and linearity, precise and detailed toward the finish. This is one of the best Coeur du Roy cuvées that I have tasted from barrel.

Initially reticent aromas of boysenberry, violet, licorice and espresso show subtle complexity and a stronger torrefaction quality with aeration. Plush in texture but less expressive and harmonious today than the Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes. The purple fruit and licorice flavors are nicely lifted by herbal and spicy nuances from the stems, which contribute elegance and lift. Very easily digestible and not at all hard, but the building tannins will nonetheless require some patience. (Incidentally, Dugat was not ready to present his Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles Vieilles Vignes, as the wine finished its malo very late and had just been racked.)
