Despite his abrupt death in a crocodile-infested river in the jungles of Nicaragua in 1869, the legacy of the infamously colorful Count Haraszthy prospers today at the historic Buena Vista Winery he founded in 1857. Recently acquired by the equally colorful bon vivant and vin extraordinaire Jean Claude Boisset, Buena Vista has enjoyed significant investment and masterful management. Notable is the addition of a Napa Valley Cabernet bottling wisely added to the line up of the estate located on Old Winery Road, Sonoma. The Napa Cab is sourced from both Oak Knoll and St. Helena with less than a year in French oak of which 20% is new. The oversized, heavy bottle harkens to bottles of the 19th century – matching the classism of wine. The Count is still considered California's most acclaimed and flamboyant vinicultural pioneer but some would contend Boisset could be his match. Who's down for the Count?

This is wonderfully balanced and refined with plum and currant character. Medium to full body. Juicy and delicious currants, berries and cherries on the finish. Succulent. Shows reserve. Drink or hold.

95 points, James Suckling (Feb 2020)

Elegantly fashioned, as Napa wines once were, lets say '60s, '70s, '80s and into the '90s, poise, moderate stature, pure Cab aromatics, lovely on the palate, balanced, without any extremes. Super selection of material with modest judicious oak, well integrated and medium tannins that are true.

Enticing aromas of currants and cranberries spring from the glass in this rich and luxurious wine. Flavors of blueberry and strawberry coat the palate with hints of cocoa and a touch of cardamom on the finish. This is a full-bodied wine with fine grained tannins and a long and intense finish.
