The 2016 Natural Red, listed as organic, is a 60/40 blend of Mavroudi and Limnio coming in at 14% alcohol. Like its "orange wine" counterpart this issue, this was aged for 270 days in amphorae and then bottled unfiltered. This is certainly a bit different, but it is ultimately both interesting and pleasing. The mid-palate shows finesse—nothing jammy or thick here—and the grape blend provides intense fruit flavor, with some chocolate and red fruits. It's all darker fruits, though. There's a big finish with a lot of pop. It seems beautifully balanced and without strong clay overtones. Overall, I rather liked this a lot. Where it goes from here is a more interesting question, but it certainly seems built to age and develop. For the moment, let's start here and trust that is the case. It does have something to prove. You could drink it right now—but it is just a little tight. It doesn't need a lot of cellaring, but six to 12 months wouldn't hurt. It is a structured and serious food wine, not a porch-sipper. Be warned.
