The 2016 Axia Syrah-Xinomavro is the typical and equal blend of Syrah and Xinomavro, aged for 12 months in an equal mixture of new and second use French barriques. It comes in at 14% alcohol. A suave and nuanced Axia this issue, this first shows off its sensual texture. It seems to be pure velvet. Then, it shows off its refinement. It's elegant and focused, never jammy or thick. Yet it is always persistent and never seems thin. It's bright, spicy and chock-full of subtle flavors. Finally, the grape blend adds some roast beef. The tannins here are soft, so this seems ready to drink right now. I'm not sure it's built to age really well, but it should hold a reasonable time. Under screwcap now, it might surprise us.
