Readers of these pages are no stranger to the stunning wines being produced by Xavier Vignon. One of the top two leading consultants in the Rhone (Cambie the other), Xavier has established a flawless reputation working with a number of top estates in Chateauneuf du Pape and beyond. Through these relationships, he has gained access to incredibly pristine parcels of very old vine plantings across the Southern Rhone. In this case 100 year old vine Mourvedre sourced from 17 parcels. Note this wine is not referred to as a Cotes du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Villages. Some of those 17 parcels are actually within the appellation of Chateauneuf du Pape. When those lots blended with parcels in other Rhone villages the wine is then legally referred to as "Vin de France." Chateauneuf may not legally be declassified as Cotes du Rhone, but you can legally drink this bargain at Cotes du Rhone prices!

There are two slightly eccentric wines from this estate that merit serious attention. Almost 100% Mourvèdre from a parcel close to Vinsobres, the sensational 2015 Vin de France Arcane XV Le Diable had a three-week maceration (Xavier prefers to get as much extraction as possible before alcoholic fermentation), and was aged mostly in small oak tanks and concrete. Blueberries, blackberries, peppery herbs and spice all flow from this layered, full-bodied beauty that has awesome purity, integrated acidity and plenty of structure. Give bottles 2-3 years and drink over the following 10-15 years.
