Te Mata – established in the 1890s – is New Zealand's oldest winery, producing wine since its first vintage in 1896. Once part of the Te Mata Station of 1854 – a pastoral land holding owned by English immigrant John Chambers – vines were first planted to this Hawkes Bay site in 1892. The original hand-built brick cellars, erected by the Chambers in 1872 remain, part of the historical foundation of this iconic New Zealand winery. The modern era for Te Mata arrived when John Buck purchased the estate in 1978, launching a full restoration and development program. Every acre of vineyard land was replanted under the guidance of respected teams from Bordeaux and Burgundy. By 1989, the new owners began acquiring the finest parcels in New Zealand's most important, distinct sub-regions of Hawkes Bay including Havelock Hills where the featured Awatea and Elston vineyards are located and renowned for producing wines with great balance, power and elegance. The average vine age in these sites is extremely old (some parcels were originally planted in the 1890s); the quality of fruit from Te Mata's estate-owned sites is simply unparalleled.

An attractive array of red berries and fresh leafy notes, classical claret-like nose, bright red berry and blueberry fruits, nicely formatted ripeness and oak is played to perfection. The palate has a succulent, juicy and lively feel to it, the mid-palate focus is impressive, hints of chocolate pervade the red cherry and mulberry flavoured finish. Drink now to 2027.

The 2015 Awatea Cabernets - Merlot is a blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc. It delivers all the classic notes of a blended Bordeaux-style red, from cedar and vanilla to black cherry and cassis. Hints of tobacco add savory complexity to the mix, while firm tannins bolster the case for aging this medium to full-bodied wine a few years before coming back to it.
