While Ribera del Duero is known for producing some of Spain’s highest priced flagship wines, the exceptional 94 pt. 2015 Resalte Expresion offers outstanding value, a luxuriously powerful 100% Tempranillo boasting rich concentration with nuances of earth and spice, bargain priced to enjoy everyday.

Constructing a state-of-the-art winery in the early 2000s as a relative newcomer to the region, Bodegas Resalte was founded in the medieval village of Penafiel along the prized “Golden Mile” just east of Vega Sicilia. Producing the Expresion only in the best vintages, Resalte sourced the grapes for the 2015 from low yielding vines averaging 50 years of age, planted in small plots at high elevations in sandy, limestone soils. Fermenting the grapes in stainless steel, winemaker Enrique Andrades aged the 2015 Resalte Expresion for 18 months in mostly French oak barrels with five more years in the bottle, yielding fresh, energetic fruit and robust, integrated tannins in a contemporary-styled Ribera that will continue to evolve.

Named an Editor's Choice by the Wine Enthusiast and typically retailing for twice the price, the highly rated 2015 Resalte Expresion delivers the powerful punch of old vine Tempranillo on a bright backbone of acidity, a palate-pleasing, go-to choice for lovers of bold Spanish reds at exceptional pricing.

Fully ripe black-fruit aromas come with hints of olive and damp earth. On the palate, this is full and kicking, with big tannins that don't tread lightly. Savory berry flavors are true to Ribera del Duero, while this is not overpowering on a long finish. Drink through 2029.

The fruit selection for this wine focuses on three towns—Fuentenebro, La Aguilera and Pedrosa—and small hillside parcels where the vines are 50 years old. The juice heads into new barrels (90 percent French) for malolactic conversion and then 18 months of aging. Rather than any overt oak tannins or scents, it is the succulent quality of the fruit that comes through in this wine’s damson-plum richness, layered with savory meatiness and earthy spice. The smoke and chocolate tones that developed over its time in oak are completely integrated into those layers of flavor, the wine all about delicious richness.
