It all started in the South American garage of Toronto native Derek Mossman Knapp in 2001; "goofing around with friends" as he puts it. Years earlier, during college, Derek had a decision to make. An avid skier, his usual destination for hitting the slopes – New Zealand – was without snow one season. No summer slopes also meant Derek was without a summer job, so he headed for the next logical destination. Landing in Chile, Derek fell in love – with the place, and eventually with his soon to be wife, Pilar Miranda. Chile was Derek's new home. That was the same time Derek met Dr. Alvaro Peña, one of Chile's top winemakers and an expert in what the industry calls "Colonial Root Stocks." One of their first vineyards was the Nivaldo Vineyard (owned by grower Nivaldo Morales), near Sauzal. This zone of Maule is "on the extreme," as Derek puts it, in the coolest sub-zone of the region. The vines in this cool, dusty, rocky site were planted 150 to 200 years ago; prime examples of "Colonial Root Stocks." These are the wines of Garage Wine Company; impossibly old vines, terrifically terroir driven, thoroughly without competition. One taste, you'll be as hooked as I.
