I've been toolin' around France's Deep South for more than a decade now, bringing you some of the finest cuvees born from the mountainous regions spanning the Cotes du Roussillon and beyond. You'll recall that my buddy Dan Kravitz introduced us to Domaine Cabirau, a lip-smacking 2011 we're still talking about. Now we're taking things to the next level, with a blockbuster cuvee from Cabirau that will absolutely blow you away. It's born from the estate's finest, oldest parcels in Maury, a sub-zone of the Roussillon just northwest of the sunny, Mediterranean village of Perpignan. These are the hilly hinterlands of the Agly Valley, where the dry, northward Tramontane winds – mimicking the Rhone's Mistral – serve to regulate temperatures, cooling the old vine Grenache and Syrah planted to soils of schist and slate, which comprise Cabirau's cuvee Serge & Nicolas. Those familiar with Maury know its history with fortified sweet wines, yet the cuvee Serge & Nicolas is decidedly NOT of that camp. "One of the blockbusters in the vintage..." says Jeb, this is a gob-smacking, palate-satiating DRY red. Yet it remains one of the greatest bargains anywhere in France – and beyond.
