Four generations of the Forner family have led a true renaissance in Rioja, beginning in 1920 with Henri Forner's great grandfather and father, who formed Vinicola Forner. Young Henri worked with his family in the production, sale and exportation of Spanish wines from Valencia. Spain's civil war interrupted the family business in their homeland, but opened new doors in France, where the family established a negociant business – in the Rhone and Loire Valleys. From there they acquired Chateau Camensac and Larose Trintaudon in Bordeaux, a move that introduced Henri to the renowned Bordeaux professor Emile Peynaud, who became consultant for Marques de Caceres upon its formation in 1970, two years after Forner returned to Spain. Forner christened his new company after good friend, investor and Spanish nobleman Marques de Caceres, establishing the estate in the finest region of Rioja – the Cenicero sub-zone of the Rioja Alta. Forner, his daughter Cristina now leading the company, changed the face of Rioja; bringing practices more common to Bordeaux than those of Rioja in his day. Today, Marques de Caceres offers a collection of superb wines across multiple price points and varietals, Michel Rolland as consultant ensuring incredible quality.

A wealth of ripe dark plums and cherries on offer here with earthy nuances, too. The palate has a very succulent, juicy and fresh feel with plenty of very juicy, rich and succulent fruit to close. Drink now.

Vivid ruby-red. Oak-spiced red fruit aromas are complicated by suggestions of cured tobacco and roasted coffee, and a peppery nuance adds lift. Sweet and supple on the palate, offering sweet red fruit and vanilla flavors and a touch of smokiness. Deepens with air, picking up a bitter chocolate quality that builds on the long, gently tannic finish. I like the blend of traditional and modern qualities here.

A deep nose with solid berry aromas, oak and spice is what you'd expect from a reserva from this reliable bodega. Full tannins make for a rubbing mouthfeel, while this tastes of berry fruit and distant chocolate. Savory flavors take over on a heavy, tannic finish. Drink through 2024.
