I like the spice, chili and stone character with the ripe yet cool fruit. Medium to full body, chewy and polished tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Better in 2019.

The 2014 Haut Lagrange is plump, juicy and forward, all qualities that make it an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Dark cherry, plum, smoke and licorice are all pushed forward. This is a decidedly fruit-forward style of Pessac, but it works. The 2014 was done in a combination of cement and oak. Best of all, the 2014 should be a terrific value. This is a striking wine from proprietor Francis Bouthemy and consultant Alain Raynaud. The blend is 60 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 40 % Merlot.

The 2014 Haut Lagrange has a rather broody and yet still attractive bouquet: blackberry, bilberry, touches of sous-bois and tobacco, all well defined and neatly integrated with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth entry, plenty of tart black cherry and cassis fruit, an energetic Pessac-Léognan with a skip in its step on the finish. I would give this another year in bottle and then it has the substance to drink well for a decade. This comes recommended.
