B-21 Top Recommendation
B-21 fans of Tuscany's best no doubt recall the phenomenal Brunelli from La Rasina that I've introduced over the past couple years. Having first met the Mantengoli family several years ago – tracking them down after tasting their tremendous 1997 – I'm a fan for life. Consistency is their hallmark, evidenced once more by this profound 2013. It all began in the early 1970s, when family patriarch and winemaker Santi Mantengoli established La Rasina. The first few harvests went to local producers, until Santi deemed his vines mature enough for estate bottling. Santi was joined by his son – the man I've come to know quite well, one of the finest winemakers in the zone – Marco Mantengoli and the magic began. That smashing 1997 I talked about? That was Marco's first vintage. Following Marco's wines, I was equally impressed with multiple subsequent vintages; the man truly has the Midas touch. Brunello is unquestionably his specialty, as he has demonstrated with one great success after another – now bottling two cuvees. His operation remains small, as he promised it always would. Just less than 30 acres, on a pristine hilltop, Marco has mastered his craft. Lucky for us, I've been there for years.
