Vivid ruby. Heady aromas of candied dark berries, smoky minerals and floral pastilles, and a hint of game in the background. Juicy, incisive and appealingly sweet, offering sappy black raspberry and cherry flavors and a touch of candied licorice. Closes on a spicy note, showing excellent persistence, building tannins and a strong echo of dark berry fruit.

The 2013 Regnie comes from 35- and 100-year-old vines on granite and sand soils. It has a sedate bouquet that lets you come to it, rather than it leaping out of the glass at you. The palate is fleshy and ripe on the entry with succulent wild strawberry and cranberry fruit, well-judged acidity and surprising density on the finish for a Regnie. There is an engaging focus here, although it will repay a couple of years in the cellar. Drink 2016-2022.
