There's a lot of attention being paid to my beloved Languedoc and I couldn't be more pleased. My early days in the zone – whizzing around the backroads near Carcassonne – were spent without a road map. No one had ventured through these parts – even Parker was 3-4 years away from telling readers, "you simply MUST discover this place" – and for every tremendous cuvee, there were plenty of duds. Today, I'm bringing in dozens of beauties. Perhaps the prize for the most breathtaking region of the Languedoc goes to La Clape. Until very recently – the summer of 2015 – this 2,000 year old landmass, which was once a Mediterranean island, was part of the Coteaux du Languedoc appellation. With advancements in viticulture and the arrival of world-class varietals – Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre – La Clape built its own identity. And there's one man driving the qualitative engine in this zone, my buddy Claude Gros – yes, he of the 95-100pt Chateau Negly bottlings. Together we have another killer bottling for ya, Bouisset's La Clape "Cuvee Eugenie." Neighboring Chateau Negly, this custom cuvee by Gros simply blew me away; there's a mile of depth and luscious fruit at an unheard-of price. You're gonna love it. |
